The Valve Cover Gaskets in the 4.0 / 4.6 / 3.9 / 4.2 Bosch engine in older Rover models like the 4.0 / 4.6 Range Rover, Discovery Series II, Range Rover Classic are notorious for leaking.
Here is how to service: Watch Doug, our Land Rover Master Technician, perform the Valve Cover Gasket Replacement on 2002 Discovery Series II (not equipped secondary air).
Using Valve Cover Gaskets Part # LVC100260, you will need two gaskets in this service.
This video also covers removing the throttle body and replacing throttle body gasket (ERR6623) without disconnecting the coolant lines, removing and replacing the upper intake manifold gasket (ERR6621), and removing and replacing the oil separator (LLJ000010) as you have the passenger-side valve cover gasket off.
Doug will also discuss vehicles equipped with secondary air.

Great video. Tough job, especially with secondary air. I wish there was more on that as I had to figure some things out the hard way. Also, while I agree with showing the passenger side first as it is harder. I'd recommend anyone doing this actually start with the drivers side. It will give you some experience that will help when tackling the other bank. It is hard, especially with secondary air, to get that cover out. Mission nearly accomplished now. Having some trouble with the ignition and secondary air bracket but stopped as I was tired. I'm getting too old for these projects! Thanks Atlantic British for all the great videos.

I cut the heads off of the 2 long valve cover screws then cut a slot to install/remove them. I then put them in the holes for the short screws. You can then set the valve cover gasket on place and those two screws hold it in place while you replace the valve cover. Install the 2 long screws, remove the 2 you made with a screw driver then install the 2 short. Its a lot easier than trying to get the gaskets to stick with something.

This site is brilliant !.When I did the heads on my d2 2001 I got slightly shorter bolts , for the rocker coverrs ! .So you get more pull on them and they were Allen key head .Reason ?, easier to fit !, No leaks .

This video is wonderful. Highly recommended. When I removed the valve cover gaskets, three of those little steel gasket rings went missing. I fished two out of the crankcase with a long wand magnet. As much as I fished in the crankcase for the third--in all of the ports that lead to the crankcase; but I still cannot find it. It may have hit the ground and rolled away, it may have gotten lodged somewhere in the engine compartment. I've looked all over for two days, but cannot find it. I am really reluctant of putting the whole thing back together again, only to discover it wound up in the crankcase where my magnet couldn't reach. Is there a way I am not considering that would help me to recover that thing? Or is tearing off the fuel injection system and the lower intake assembly the only answer to be absolutely sure?

Great video, hope to replace my gaskets later this summer. I had to replace my throttle body heater plate and gasket this past year as they were leaking and I wanted to flush and refill the system and I went ahead and replaced the brittle plastic hoses (TBHP to reservoir and the one from the radiator) with rubber heater hoses but be careful as the pipe at the radiattor is plastic and can break if you push it too hard and then you are replacing a radiator. It's worth pointing out that if you are doing this you should consider swapping out the spark plug wires if they are old as it is easier to do if the intake manifold is removed. Also if you do have bad hoses you might as well change them instead of just moving them like he did. I would use some zip ties to pull the wiring harness and other things out of the way, seems like he was fighting them as them got back in the way. That 12 pt socket for the valve covers is hard to find. I think I finally was able to special order a Craftsman one from Sears, I imagine Snap On or other pro suppliers have them. You can tighten the lower bolts a few times, typically at oil changes but those barrels in the gasket will eventually keep you from tightening them further and the rubber gasket get brittle so they will leak. I have read on some of the LR forums that some people use some RTV gasket cement to glue the rubber to the cylinder head to inhibit future leaking, not sure if that works or just makes the next swap out harder.

GREAT video! I just got my Range Rover back from the dealership since I am under CPO where they did this job. Immediately after I got the vehicle and drove it about 50 miles the engine light started flashing, then the REDUCED PERFORMANCE warning came on and the Rover basically had very little power. Could something have gone wrong in this service that I should be looking at? Range Rover dealership quickly told me when I reported this that I am NOW out of CPO. How convenient! Advice?

If a valve cover, oil fill cap or dipstick not properly installed after the repair can loosen and create a vacuum leak that will cause 'reduced performance'

Secondary Air makes it impossible to just 'roll off' the valve cover on the passenger side as shown in this video and while it's true that you can remove the upper air intake manifold by simply removing the studs you can not remove the valve cover on the passenger side as shown in this video without removing the pipe assembly that attaches to the exhaust manifold. Just a head's up to anyone who runs out and buys a socket for studs.
@bob_Human
@bob_Human 8 лет назад
If there IS a way to do it on the passenger side without removing that pipe assembly I'm ready to see how that's done.
@dewmontjerkins9886
@dewmontjerkins9886 7 лет назад
Gently pry the bracket off of the two studs in the intake-- it will flex easily as the air pipes are bellowed to absorb vibration; this method is far less risky than trying to unbolt the air injection tubes from the manifold. Also with secondary air you need to remove the metal cooling tube than bolts into the top of the engine; as a plus it's far easier to get the valve cover on and off with the tube out of the way!
@davidisdivad
@davidisdivad 7 лет назад
I did it, i removed the two retaining nuts from that bracket, removed the rubber hoses from the the sai metal valve things. and well i just risked bending the pipe "easily" back, pulling the bracket away from the studs on the intake. you only have to go 1/2 inch if you "trim" the studs. The valve cover tacking adhesive was a pretty handy, but still troublesome. The heater hose have to be unscrewed and pulled back, you need to make a pretty good tunnel under the alternator wire. Worked out for me, good luck. I found it pretty nice to changing all the spark plugs and wires while everything was apart.

So the only criticism I have is the full removal of the fan. In this video it looked like he just hit the wrench once with the hammer and it came right off. I had to get two different fan clutch wrenches and a thin 36mm wrench before I got mine to come off. Set me back almost two weeks with my work schedule!

Is it possible to try replacing the valve stem seals with the heads on? I want to try putting rope in the spark plug holes and cranking each cylinder up at a time to hold the valves up from falling inside the block, any tips I should take from you guys before attempting this job? THANKS GUYS I HOPE ALL IS WELL OVER THERE 🙏

Secondary air adds fresh air to the exhaust at startup to help with emissions until the catalytic converters get up to temp. I'm not sure if the purpose is to help the cats get up to temp quicker or to help burn off emissions until the cats get hot, or both.

Does your Rover have secondary air? If it doesn't then you should be safe to do this. Just make sure to watch the video and do exactly as he says. If you do have secondary air I would suggest seeking help. I just finished doing this on my 01 RR that did have secondary air and it was much more difficult than I thought it would be. There is a lot of things not covered in the video about secondary air. If you don't have it the video will walk you through it precisely. Good luck!

Hi folks. It isn't possible to remove the passenger side valve cover without removing the SAI pipe assembly for a LR D2 2004. It would be appreciated if Atlantic British mentioned that it the video; otherwise, it's a good video with useful tips. Also you don't have to remove the fan to get the serpentine belt off.

you may want to remove the fan, and lower the whole air conditioning/powersteering bracket, tons of space for those 6 bolts or so just lower the bracket a bit, don't have to remove it.

@grahamhgraham
@grahamhgraham 5 лет назад
These are heater hoses to speed up the heating of the throttle body to help reduce emissions. They make no difference to performance and some folks have them taken off and connected together to bypass the body or have them blocked off completely.
@kembalsado1
@kembalsado1 8 лет назад
hello at 47:20 you talk about the throttle body heater cooling lines. How important is that? I had constant leaking from that spot after multiple replacements of the gasket so I ended up bypassing it.
