It might be a good idea to grab a few of the Orange Safety Cones to put out when you are working close to roadway. You want to avoid an insurance liability issue where there was dirt on the roadway.

Once upon a time, the intake end of culverts were cut at a 45 and screened over. Then, any debris washed down, would be diverted off to the sides and not pile up against a flat end. The out feed doesn’t matter of course, but the intake does.

Tim you might know this, or someone has already stated, but a general rule of thumb is ⅓ of the overall diameter of the pipe is what you want for coverage over a culvert pipe. So a 12" pipe would have a minimum of 4" cover...
@wingwhacker7500
@wingwhacker7500 2 года назад
I believe the rating though is based on 1 ft. of fill over the top of the culvert.
@andrewslagle1974
@andrewslagle1974 2 года назад
@@wingwhacker7500 yes it is !
@upandadam9080
@upandadam9080 2 года назад
@@wingwhacker7500 so does that mean is should be 1 ft plus 4" on a 12" pipe? Or 12" minumum... if you get into bigger pipes (like 4ft) then the ⅓ rule comes into play?
@wingwhacker7500
@wingwhacker7500 2 года назад
I believe it is 12 inches for the rating, but I would check the ASTM standard as it may have changed or have caveats; Larger pipes may be different like you said Adam. But, small culverts, like this one, are rated based on a certain amount of fill. It doesn't mean what they did will not work. They may need to think about it whenever they bring a heavy wheeled vehicle like a cement truck into the place especially during soft soil conditions. The rating is so you can compare different size vehicles of course. Also, I believe you can figure out what the rating of the culvert as installed is by a chart for the culvert based on fill above the pipe depth.
@PawPaws_Place
@PawPaws_Place 2 года назад
I have a 30’ steel culvert I have 2” of fill on. Sometimes you can see it and I have to cover it back up. 😂You could drive a cement truck over it though. How deep your fill is will depend on how deep the ditch is and how big the county tells you the diameter of the culvert has to be. For me that was 16” and with the ditch that left me 2”s of fill. So you sometimes get stuck with what you have to work with.
@t.conner4798
@t.conner4798 2 года назад
Tim as others have already mentioned, you’re hanging out a country mile and endangering yourselves by not have adequate warning signs in advance of the work zone. At the very least, park a car with flashers ahead of the work area to worn others of something happening. And since you were within the city right of way, you should have gotten a permit in advance. Look at the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, MUTCD, to see how it should have worked. Lots of lawyers make a very good living on incidents occurring in work zones. Bullet dodged, but lesson learned.

Another great video! Nice to see how much you can do with just a loader bucket. I have a suggestion topic for another video...I love to see a quick coupler review for the backhoe buckets. I know Mudd's and BXpanded both have them, but I'm concerned about clearance issues with the boom and loss of digging force.
@stevebrookshire1969
@stevebrookshire1969 2 года назад
Mark, I have the BXpanded quick coupler on my 260B. I put it on before I ever dug with it so I'm not sure how much it affects the digging force but I can tell you this, it still has had more than enough power to dig anything I've tried with it. My only complaint with the 1025R/260B combo is that there's not enough flow rate so it's slow and sorta hard to feather the controls to do 2 functions at once. The BXpanded adds maybe just a couple of inches to the "length" of the hoe. I highly recommend it!

I have a question Tim, about thumbs. You did some great lifting and carrying using just the bucket and the boom of your backhoe. Do you find rear thumbs on backhoe buckets of a benefit that justifies the cost? I’m considering a thumb…I’m thinking a fixed thumb to save the cost between that and a mechanical thumb. Any advice on thumbs and, is a mechanical any more of a benefit to justify the extra costs?
