The Elbmarsch bridge (K20) opened in 1975, and at 3.84 kilometres is still the longest motorway bridge in Germany, and a key part of the Port of Hamburg's infrastructure. As part of the expansion of the A7 motorway from 6 to 8 lanes south of the Hamburg Elbe Tunnel by STRABAG AG, the North bridge construction division is renewing 10 mega supports while the motorway and port traffic continues to flow.
The mega supports, with a diameter of 6.00 m and a height of up to 7.30 m and the overlying crossbeam (up to 866 tonnes) each have their load taken onto temporary supports, are demolished and then rebuilt for the addition of the extra lane. The surrounding traffic routing (including the access ramp to the Köhlbrandbrücke) is adjusted in parallel.
This time-lapse film shows the work on axis 71 East over a period of approximately 1 year, divided into 8 construction phases:
Phase 1 - Production of topping concrete
Phase 2 - Auxiliary interception + reloading
Phase 3 - Demolition of the mega support
Phase 4 - Demolition of the cross bar on the skidway
Phase 5 - New construction of crossbars on shoring
Phase 6 - New construction of the mega support
Phase 7 - Demolition of auxiliary support
Phase 8 - Follow-up work
