Absolutely fantastic build and for those commenting that its like an 80s build when compared to modern methods....well can i suggest that they watch plenty youtube vids showing horrendous issues with modern methods. The breather membrane is current and long lasting so while its dangling into the gutter it will last a long time say 15 to 20 yrs and after that if does rot then that part section can easily be replaced by slightly lifting the bottom tiles and sticking more membrane or even a drip tray if you like. Well done you've got a new subscriber here. Having worked on building sites for many years, I can assure people that theres a lot of uneducated and even criminals doing awful standard work just for the money. They dont take pride in the work that they do. I was accused more than once about being pleased with my work. In fact one awful ex boss who often put me down was caught thieving materials and accused of show boating only when the customer was on site!!!

Love it. Bout a house a year ago, didn't realize it was guna be so much of a doer-uper. One of the last things I'd like to do is replace the conservatory roof. I was thinking of going for a OSB boar and liquid rubber system on top. Your video has given me food for thought. Thanks for putting this vid together. Very helpful. Dan 👍👏👏👏

Should have doubled those joists either side of the velux opennings!!! This is why we have building regs to prevent people buying dangerous bodge jobs!!!🤯🤯🤯🤯

You cut way too much out on the birds mouth cut (front cut out over door), maximum 1/3 depth of rafter, you effectively reduced the size of timber you used!
@aaanton11
@aaanton11 2 месяца назад
I needed the extra cut to get the pitch right, don't worry I fixed with extra screws right through the thicker sections for extra strength Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@edthompson9337
@edthompson9337 2 месяца назад
@@aaanton11 Additional fixings would make no difference, the underside of the rafter is not bearing on the timber wallplate therefore reducing it's strength. That along with not doubling up the rafters either side of the roof windows means it would not comply with UK building regs. It's a good effort for an amateur but ultimately flawed.
@AlexGnok
@AlexGnok Месяц назад
exactly what I thought when watching this - so much thickness of the rafter is wasted. You almost reduced the rafter to something like 2x3. Amount of fixings doesn't matter as timber can just split
@mikebarry229
@mikebarry229 Месяц назад
@@edthompson9337 In this case the single rafters were probably JUST about OK, but 100% that degree of notching is not permitted, and additional screws wouldn't generally be accepted, instead multi nail joist hangers could have been fitted to provide the additional bearing required.

Aren’t the side spars to the Velux windows supposed to be doubled up and the tops and bottoms as well?
@aaanton11
@aaanton11 2 месяца назад
Depend on how thick the joists are, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@mikebarry229
@mikebarry229 Месяц назад
As a general rule of thumb yes, doubles are often required each side. A simple way to look at it is the rafter size required without rooflights. If your roof needed 145x47 rafters at 400c/c's then yes you would need doubles each side (because you need to make up for the rafters being removed where the rooflight is). In this case it looks the span is about 2.8m and 120x47 C24 rafters at 400mm centers would have been adequate as rafters, but those would definitely have needed doubles around the roof light. 145x47 rafters in C24 grade being slightly deeper (and therefore stronger) would probably work as singles in this particular case, JUST. Very often doubles aren't needed top and bottom as the spans are so short (unless you have an extremely wide roof light). Contrary to some suggestions here, this work requires Building Regulation approval so the Building control surveyor will make sure that appropriate rafter and trimmer sizes are used. Building control surveyors will typically ask for doubles (at least initially) regardless of whether it is actually needed structurally as it is a good habit to get into.

The pitch can be as low as 11degrees with certain makes of tiles. This is not so that rain water rolls down but to ensure water cannot blow back up the tiles.

Just had my house re-roofed and they put sheets of OSB on the rafters, then the membrane, lathes and tiles. Maybe the OSB sheets are a local regulation. Good job anyway!

It depends what was underneath, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@mikebarry229
@mikebarry229 Месяц назад
Not a requirement in the England and Wales, in fact you wouldn't be allowed to do it like that as the membrane would be pinched between the lathes and OSB, trapping any water that got through the tiles. If you wanted to use OSB under the membrane you would need to add vertical battens in line with the joists on top of the OSB, then drape the breathable membrane over those battens, then fix the lathes over that. Alternatively the vertical battens can go over the membrane, but not as good in my opinion.
@worldofrandometry6912
@worldofrandometry6912 Месяц назад
@@mikebarry229 Yes, there are battens under the lathes. The original roof (built in 1975) had sheets of what looked like plasterboard on the rafters with felt over the top of that. All new roofs around here now have OSB sheeting.

What degree pitch did you say? 17⁰ For that span if approx 3150mm you would need a rise of 963mm at the wall, which is nearly 13 course of bricks. Have you also notified building regs, as the conservatory is no longer and seems for to be akin of an extension plus that new roof construction has to be passed. Looks like about 8 course or 600mm.
