Replacing a Push Mower Start Cord ~ Rick's Tips

Hello Everybody! This week, I am faced with a frayed starter pull cord on my Troy Bilt, Brigs & Stratton 670 series, push mower. So I need to figure out how to fix this because if I can't start it, I can't use it and my back yard is starting to look like a jungle with all the rain we've been having!
It took a while to research how to get this done and I looked high and low for a visual aid to help me understand how to do it. However, to no avail, there was nothing. I have read instructions and done the work here for you. If you have this problem now or in the future, don't think you have to purchase a new mower. I have shown in this video how you can do it yourself.
The most important thing is to use common sense! Go slowly and use the proper tools. If you have never picked up a screwdriver before, this is probably not the project you should test your skills on. Overall, for an experienced handy person, this will not be too difficult, but it will take time and concentration. You will need to take care to remember where everything came from so it can go back where it belongs.
You can purchase replacement pull cords for mowers at most home improvement centers that sell mowers. However, I try to use what I have on hand and the cord I had in the shed, was equal to what they sell in the store. The replacement comes with the cord and a new plastic pull handle. The cost was around $15.00. I replaced mine for nothing except the time I spent doing it. In the end, my mower works for another day and I helped you understand how to replace this pesky part.
A lawnmower is an investment. Even if you purchased a lower end model, you still spend hard earned money on it. It is important to maintain what you have and keep it working. I certainly don't think this piece of machinery should be considered disposable, however a lot of people would just chuck it and go buy a new one because it needed a new pull cord or a sharpened blade or a new spark plug, if they could not figure out what the problem was. I know you are probably not those folks, but there are those type of people in the world.
I hope this helps you to fix your mower if you should encounter this particular problem. Now I have decided to rebuild the carburetor on this mower so you know that will be yet another video in the future.
I hope you learned something useful and I hope this helps you!
Have a Handy Week!

Thank you so much! My daughter and I were able to fix our mower with the help of your video! Our biggest struggle was feeding the string through the 2 narrow holes. My daughter had a brilliant idea to use a straw to feed the string through the straw snd then through the 2 holes.

Glad that someone tackled a Toro with a difficult to reach pull cord. All the others were so simple doing a video was a waste of time. I have the same type mower as you and when I removed the cover to find rivets instead of bolts I freaked. Thank you for being there.

I had watched another video to replace the pull cord but it was a different model than the one in your demonstration. Those rivets threw me. I was worried I'd have to take apart the whole engine. But your explanation was clear and spot on. California has so much rain my backyard lawn was a forest. Now with your help I am slowly getting it back to normal. Thanks.

This video is AWESOME and I used it to take apart the exact same mower you show to reattach the pull cord at the recoil mechanism where it broke at the knot. Those darned rivets, tho. Took it all apart and just saved a bunch of money. I am a handy 72 year old widow and do a lot of stuff on my own with the boys gone. Thank You So Much, dude!

Nice video. Very helpful. My mower is a Toro Recycler 21" Self-Drive, but has a B&S 6.0HP engine, and the part positioning and bolts were exactly the same. I ended up using some parachute jump cord I already had, threaded it into the housing directly off the spool, and waited to cut it to length until I crimped the lead stopper back on the new cord and got the handle knotted up. Many thanks for the video. +1 for not needing to drain the gas tank.

I gotta hand it to you, your video miraculously had the exact same type of B&S Motor w/ pull start mechanism. I went from going-to-pay to have it done to Got It Done in 10 min, and half the time was tool prep. Thanks!

Thanks Rick. My son and I replaced the pull cord on my Troy Bilt push mower in about 30 minutes without using a single profanity thanks to your detailed instructions and visuals. The hardest part was rethreading the cord into the coil...just melted the tip of the cord to make it suffer and shaped it with a hammer. It went through the first time after that.

omg. First this is a great video of a horribly engineered mower. I've watched five videos of replacing pull cords. The other four videos featured mowers with pull cords repaired by removing two screws, maybe 3. That's it! This model of mower requires removing the gas tank, and moving the oil dipstick. Then there is the removal of two screws, 3 bolts (so you don't have to drill out and re-rivet!), and then a fourth bolt that isn't even the same size as the other 3. Just...wow. Again, this is a wonderful video but the mower is a PITA.

Thanks, Rick! Decided to try the pull-cord repair myself after watching a couple other videos. At the last minute I noticed your video sitting in the "Up Next" section, with a picture of an engine that looked just like mine. Glad I clicked on it, since I have the same Briggs & Stratton engine on a Toro mower. Cannot thank you enough. If I had popped the top off mine and seen those rivets holding it on, I probably would have just given up and taken it in somewhere to be fixed. But with your video, it was a piece of cake.
