I spent an hour trying to put the seal back in your way. Finally, I had an idea to close the flange, and I pushed the seal gently down & it slipped right in the groove. It's much easier!

You put the seal in with the flange closed? Right from the start? I’m so afraid of dropping it into the toilet! 😩

Thanks for the tip about keeping your hand in the middle of the seal! Made me much less nervous to do it this way vs removing the toilet and replacing from underneath. Btw, it took me twice as long to get the old seal out as it did to install the new one!

@@brianwilkinson769 yeah it can be tricky trying to get the new seal out because it's been in there for so long. Glad you worked it out.

Yes, I did a double check and found a section that wasn't pushed all the way into place. Unfortunately it still leaks, so I agree that the flushing mechanism may be shot. It's a 10 year old trailer so I can't complain. Hopefully, I can find the parts and not have to buy a new toilet!

I just watched your toilet video. Did a leak test on ours and sure enough, our seal leaks down in 5 min. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm glad you checked. If there isn't water in the toilet, the smell from the black tank will come up through there.

Use Oatey plumber valve grease for the seal. I couldn’t find this brand in Ontario but found a comparable at Home Depot. Works great and better than a rubber lube. Happy camping!

I usualy never comment on video. But thank you so much for this video. I watch other video where people dismantle the toilet to get to this gasket and I thought what a shitty job to do. Then I came across your video. I said to my self it can't be that simple... Well I suited up ( put gloves on ) and gave this a try. After exacly 5 minutes I got this to work !!! I'll repeat your recommendation use gloves it will give you the courage needed. I also used curved pliers to help with that "shennagling".

I read you should be using Thetford RV toilet seal lube & conditioner to prolong the life of the gasket.
@CampingwiththeColes
@CampingwiththeColes Месяц назад
Yes, the lube could help. We felt as long as it's wet it should be fine.

Noticed in an earlier episode, you took your trailer out of storage and removed the cover. It would be interesting to find any literature on benefits of storing trailer with or without cover over the winter months, even during the summer months to prevent sun damage. I store our trailer indoors over the winter and it’s really helped maintain its newness. But I’m wondering if I should cover over summer months for added protection?
@CampingwiththeColes
@CampingwiththeColes 4 месяца назад
Ideally I'd like to have my trailer always covered. The sun's damaging rays fades the finish and dries out all the caulking and butyl tape. When it dries out it cracks and is a pathway for water to get in the trailer. If water gets it you can have major damage. We used to store it for winter indoors but when we lost that spot we started storing it outdoors with a properly fit cover for it. To keep the trailer it tip top shape I should cover it when home in the driveway but I don't. Covering it between camping trips would be a good way to maintain the trailer.

@@CampingwiththeColes @robdellacroce7295 When we purchased our second trailer we wanted to buy one of those covers and the sales person strongly suggested not using one as they trap moisture, and they did have them there in stock.

I put a new seal in after watching your video, thank you for providing this information. Sadly, my seal still leaks. Do I need to replace the whole toilet?
@CampingwiththeColes
@CampingwiththeColes Месяц назад
I'd double check. With the water off, flush the toilet to open it, then feel around the bottom of the seal to make sure it's all pushed in correctly. It should feel the same all the way around. If it is and it still leaks you might have to replace the whole flushing mechanism.

We lost antifreeze also. Our toilet is only 1 year old. Now I know what to do. Cheryl I sent you a couple pictures of a storage idea from IKEA. A gal can never have enough storage, right? 😉

Will have to check outs. Our water pump primes every hour or so since we got the trailer new. It’s been in the dealership many times and they can’t find leak. Wonder if it’s the toilet seal.
@CampingwiththeColes
@CampingwiththeColes 4 месяца назад
That's frustrating. Sounds like you have a very small leak somewhere in the system but I don't think it would be the toilet seal. The toilet bowl seal just prevents water in the toilet bowl from draining out. The pump wouldn't turn on until you flush the toilet. Good luck with getting that figured out.

I got a new seal for mine, but when I went to take the old one out, I can't find it. Is it possible that the old seal went down the drain? There is nothing but the blade showing in the toilet. Mine is an Aqua Magic iV
@CampingwiththeColes
@CampingwiththeColes 2 месяца назад
I guess it's possible the seal broke and fell down into the black tank. If you feel around the rim with your gloved hand you should be able to feel some grooves where it would normally fit.
@valerieballin381

Does this make it leak at the base of it goes bad?
@CampingwiththeColes
@CampingwiththeColes 3 месяца назад
Thankfully no. It just leaks into the black tank. There is a seal between the bottom of the toilet and the floor. If that seal leaks you could have a mess on the floor.

I'm happy to have found your video today. I need to do this job. I was dreading taking the whole toilet off. I don't know exactly what @karenknight2205 means and I was thinking the blade may get in the way of the reinstall.
@CampingwiththeColes
@CampingwiththeColes 3 месяца назад
The instructions that come with the seal says to remove the toilet and remove the seal through the underside. That's why they include the floor gasket in the package. We found it was easier to just remove it from the top without removing the toilet. I'm not sure why she had such difficulty putting the new seal in. I found that was the easy part. Taking the old seal out can be hard to do pulling it out with your fingers.
