Replacing baseless pots

One of the most popular of Bunny’s videos is about baseless pots. In this video you can see Bunny changing the old, broken terracotta pot that contains a Phillyrea latifolia (green olive) with new metal ones with help! In this case Bunny put the new pot over the plant and then packed more compost around the rootball, on other occasions she has positioned two halves of the container around the rootball and then fixed them together.

Oh Bunny , I thought for sure they were going to be destroyed once I saw that pot going over the top. I’m glad you showed us how it was done and it turned out well! 🌳

They are beautiful Bunny. I’m pleased you didn’t have to cut too much off the olives.

Mystery solved 😂 I love how you didn’t even to remove the old pot and add more dirt. But…could the trees have be dug up, maybe root pruned ahead of time and then repotted in their new home?

Hi All, I make plant rings out of pure copper for this purpose. They can be installed on site around an existing bottomless pot, or around the soil/roots if the pot is removed. The ring is made out of sheet copper but only soldered closed once it is in situ. As the plant grows, the ring can be de-soldered and removed as required. I can't leave links here but if you google 'copper and green plant pots' you should find me. Many thanks.

Hi Bunny your pots look pretty swish, well done. Personally I like the Lead finish, but I'm sure whatever you do it will look fantastic. My 8 beautiful Box balls got attacked by moths (?) last year & they ate big patches of foliage and exposed branches which died. Also the local cats (which are many) liked to spray up them which left burnt patches around the bottoms.They looked awful, so I thought i'd bite the bullet & replace them with Yews. Remembering your video on Baseless Pots, it inspired me to give it a go. I brought some bare rooted Yews in November & pots, over the next few months they got there new home around the garden in Baseless pots. They look a little lost at the moment but I'm very excited to watch them fill out. Added bonus is, they are out of the way from those pesky cats too! Often wondered how to replace pots when needed, Masterclass 🌻 Thank you Bunny for this great idea. I love your channel

Those look quite nice! Better than terracotta, in my opinion.

I have a baseless pot that I will have to replace soon. It's totally hidden, but my current plan is to just dry stack stone around the outside. Hope that works.

Maybe some brickwork if you can and like.

Just thinking maybe even the metal ones could have been made in 2 parts with invisible clips - would make it easier to re-use too?

I am gobsmacked that those guys got the pots stuffed over those humongous bushes---I thought, "No way!" but they did it. Pots are gorgeous, must have cost a fortune, I say leave them the lead color.

Do you fill the void around the plant in the new pot with soil?

What happens if they don't get any paint? Would they rust away? Would the paint protect them? I think they look pretty like that, but I wouldn't like them as much if they rusted.

They have been galvanised and then acid etched or T washed, so the galvanising protects the metal and the T wash gives that lead colour finish which requires no maintenance. It does mean you can apply paint directly too if you want, which you can not do normally straight after galvanising 🐇

It looks like you didn't remove the old pot first. I wonder why you didn't take it off and fill the gap between the now-bare rootball and the new pot with soil.
@bunnyguinness
@bunnyguinness 4 месяца назад
I did, I smashed it with a hammer and then scratched edge of compacted root ball and then back filled with new soil once pot was on 🐇

Why not open the gate unless it’s fake? And enclose it that way?
