Replacing Lift Struts Quickly & Easily!

Gas Struts are now very common, and they are surprisingly easy to order and replace yourself! Whether the strut is on a toolbox, lift gate, storage or "Murphy" bed, hatch or attic ladder, the process to remove and replace a strut is very similar.
In this episode, Dirt Farmer Jay shows you have to change out the lift supports on the back gate of an SUV. Lift supports are also known as gas springs, gas struts, and lift struts. Some online retailers have ordering systems that allow you to quickly and accurately find the right set of supports for your application.
You'll only need a few tools to do the job, and we'll walk you through it and give you a couple of safety tips as well!
Even though we show grease being applied to the ball sockets as we installed them, we've since discovered that the vast majority of strut manufacturers utilize self-lubricating materials. Lube is additional. Whether you use grease or not, make sure that the mounts are clean before installing your new set of struts!
Remember, most lids, hoods, trunks, and hatches are quite heavy. They need to be fully supported as the old struts are removed and as the new ones are installed. For this job on the hatch door on our SUV, we used a 6' stepladder to do the job.
DFJ buys lift struts at LiftSupportsDepot.com. We have received no compensation of any kind for this video. When we find a good company and product, we like to pass it on!
You can download a copy of LiftSupportDepot.com's installation and FAQ sheet by visiting drive.google.c....
Thanks to Brandon at Lift Supports Depot.com for insights on how gas struts are utilized and constructed. You can contact the company at www.liftsupportsdepot.com.
Sure, you could take your vehicle to the garage, but why? Now you can JUST DO IT YOURSELF!

I am a 63 yr old woman who has been struggling with the back hatch on my Equinox for 2 years every time it is extremely cold outside. Your video was spot on and I was able to change out my gas struts within minutes. I am so proud of myself for researching and fixing the problem. Thanks to you I don't have to struggle anymore putting groceries, etc in the back!

Thanks for watching, taking action to "just do it yourself" and being an inspiration to others! I am turning 68 in a few months and appreciate other women like you who don't want to "just sit in their rocker" so to speak. Dirt Farmer Jay and I are very busy, active people in our mid to late 60's. Sounds like we'd be good friends. Best to you, Dirt Farmer Maggie

You will need a small screwdriver to loosen the old clips, grease the balls, loosen the new clips on new struts, snap ball joint on balls, push the clips if they need help to snap back in place. My prob is, the new struts are 3 inches "too long" and I Can't compress them by hand. I thought they were the Rokcauto listed part.

Unfortunately, some vehicles have no extra room to lift the gate as in the video so the strut could be added, then shut, thus you can't compensate for the extra long strut, which will not compress to make it fit. Feel free to offer any solution not involving a paid mechanic, a pipe compressor, or bailing wire. UPDATE (Possible solution): Be sure to REMOVE BOTH OF THE OLD STRUTS first so the hood has extra room to open so the newer/longer struts will fit before closing/compressing.

WARNING: Do not pry the clip on the new struts too far out. This can result in the clip bending or rotating making it difficult to insert it on the male section. Simply line it up with the male section and gently pry it out just a little bit while at the same time pushing it into place--then release the tension on the clip and it will lock into place. I made the mistake and tried to "prep" the new stuts and opened up a real can of worms when the clip spun out of position and I had to completely disassemble it.

If you don't have a step ladder, get your pair of vice-grips out of your tool box, clamp them on the rod of one of the fully extended old pistons next to its' piston to keep it fully extended, and remove the other one. Then to install the other, clamp the vice-grips onto the rod of the one you just installed (protect the new pistons' rod from damage with a piece of cardboard, etc.) and replace it like you did the other.

TD Hawk, I don't know if you've tackled this job yet, but basic safety gear is all you need. The oily substance is the material used inside the strut and the seals on your old strut are failing, leading to lack of "lifting power" of the struts. You will find that the new struts have only a light film of oil on the rod that comes out of the end of the strut. Let me know how this turns out for you. Best, DFJ

Thank you, I almost broke my hand doing this the wrong way - the whole thing with the clip made all the difference. My replacements came with the brackets so when I took off the old one (OEM with no clips) I removed them by removing the brackets. When I tried to put the first new strut in, I bolted the bracket (with the strut attached) to the liftgate and then tried to attach the bracketto the body (with the strut still attached to that bracket too) and tried to compress the lift with by easing down the gate, and then the body end of it slipped and went up and trapped my hand! The more the gate came down the more it was crshing my hand, so I summoned up all my strength to push up and get my hand out! Then I took a break and decided to check RU-vid and found your video (after a couple others) and you did a great job explaining about the clip and when I went back and attached the bracket FIRST and then pulled back the clip and clipped in in AFTERWARDS it all went so quickly and easily !!!! so THANK YOU!!!

Wonderful video !!! Not just the instructions, but ALSO a place to get reasonably priced struts! 😀 Before coming across this video, I was debating between buying "genuine" gas struts at $250+shipping for a pair (can trust it, but pricey), vs eBay's $24 a pair (very hesitant to trust it). With help of this video, I ordered a pair from LiftSupportsDepot.

We are evidently weak. We had to use the ladder and then put the car jack on it using two pieces of wood one on the top of the jack between it and the hatch and one on the ladder between it and the jack. Once we did that it was quick. Those 60 year old ladies are super human as far as we are concerned.

Hello DirtFarmerJay, thanks for putting up this video. I bought gas struts for my ford and when I tried to push them together manually and they didn't budge, I thought they were defective. Your video was very helpful, keep up the great work. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain how the gas struts actually work. I looked at a few youtube videos but none explained how the gas struts engage with the boot of the car.

Also, suggestion to folks, If you're watching this video, chances are you already noticed your hatch doesn't open as high as it used to. Take my advice: Go ahead and CHANGE those struts NOW, both of them. You don't want to wait until both struts go out completely. (Ask me how I know. 🤣)

You da man! Thank-you so much for your excellent suggestion on using a ladder to prop-up the tailgate. I successfully replace struts on two RX300s using my 6' ladder and a couple of 2 by 4s.. My friend unfortunately got one strut installed and while installing the second, the tailgate came crashing down, shattering her back window. She didn't have a ladder and instead used a long, unstable 2 by 4.
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 2 года назад
Glad it helped, Alan. Once you know how, this is a simple repair that is, in my opinion, commonly overcharged for. I'm sorry to hear about your friend's "headache" and broken window. Talk about something simple turning into a complexity. UGGGH. Thanks for writing! Best, DFJ

The basic principal of the gas spring is incredibly simple. It is a gas charged pneumatic cylinder with a piston and rod inside of the gas chamber. The piston has a small hole to bleed the gas through it as it is compresses, thus requiring force (like you pushing down on the tail gate) compressing the gas into the smaller area around the rod as it retracts. This results in the gas pressure around the rod being higher then that at the end of the piston, making it wanting to force itself back into the area where there is no rod, effectively pushing the piston and rod out of the cylinder, thus extending it with enough force to lift and hold a tail gate.

@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 2 года назад
TD, the grease that you saw is red lithium grease. Lucas® is a great brand, and you can buy a small tub of their "Red and Tacky" grease from any decent auto parts store, or a retailer like Walmart. The tub is probably $8 or so. I hope that helps! - DFJ

Why did the freaking ones I got have a threaded end instead of two connecter "heads"? I'm so upset that I can't figure out how to replace them. My pair didn't come with any instructions and I can't figure out how to reuse the existing connecter that's not one one end of the new struts. I'm probably not making any sense. It's just really hot, I have a bad headache and I'm super frustrated.

Very good, the video unravelled the mystery of the clip. Up until I viewed the video, I was struggling. The gas struts I replaced were off the tail gate of a Issuzu MUX. The factory fitted ones were I think meant for short people and not 6'-1" Aussies and I continually banged my head on the raised tailgate. The new ones I fitted were longer and the tail-gate now clears my head by a couple of inches. Thx heaps dirt-farmer, that f-ing clip had me buggered before I watch your excellent video then only 5-minutes to replace both struts.

Thanks! I’ve replaced a set of these on my RV bin but the door is not staying open, it slowly closes. I think they are supposed to hold it open for the duration while I put things in or out. Does this mean they are defective?
@mk-77

Good presentation. However you should lift the tailgate all the way to the top when removing struts because there will be less tension when you try to pull out the strut from the ball fitting. The strut should be going out just by pulling moderately by hand once retainer clip is lifted.
