A couple of notes below if anyone needs them: - Make sure to buy an Si specific starter, the non-si version and the si are NOT compatible. If you're going for OEM make sure its part number RRA and NOT RNA. - Disconnect your battery to make sure you don't fry yourself, anything else on the car, or your new starter - You don't need to take off the front bumper, if you have a low profile socket or ratcheting wrenches you can pull forward the front bumper after you take the two H5 Allen fasters off from the front grille to the bulkhead Good luck! Thanks for the DIY vid, helped me do the job on my Acura CSX Type S (Canadian spec). Everything was the same except the hex head (Allen) bolts, 10mm's all around for me. Hardest part was the rear starter 14mm bolt, otherwise a straight-forward job with a happy ending. Thump-thump-thump-vroom!
I did mine two days ago: 2007 Honda Civic Si 2.0L 6 speed 4 doors. The way I did it was by just removing the top chasis piece that goes on top of the radiator. Actually, I was planning to removed the intake manifold first but last minute decided to remove front chasis part. Nothing complicated, enough space to work on and to take off the old starter and placing the new one. Hope this will help anybody with same problem. If you have any question never hesitate to ask me
Reknbll To remove the front chasis may be 5 minutes. To removed the old stater and to put the new one, may be 30 minutes, and about 10 minutes to put back everything. Total: Less than an hour, working time
Holy crap dude ty , you saved me from having to jack my car up and coming from underneath or even taking the manifold off. Repair shop wanted to charge me $700
Just changed mine today with a $53 new starter from fleabay and so far so good! Noise is gone and the engine turns over way faster. Now let’s see how long a $53 starter will last.......
The only thing I'd like to add is on my '08 I had to remove two bolts holding the ac condenser as well. Also, all those zip tie tab things for the fan wiring broke and the intake manifold bracket bottom bolt was a bitch to start the threads when reassembling. And I recommend using plenty of PB Blaster for the starter bolts. Leverage is tough. Had to break out the torch for the 17. Last but not least, spend the money on a genuine Honda/ Mitsuba starter. You don't wanna do this again next year. Took me about 3 hours. Hope yall have better luck.
Mine is bad. Called Honda and want $580, there are some OEM on Ebay for around $330 and remanufactured ones at autoparts starting $150 to $300. I am afraid to get remanufactured or cheap ones because might break in a few months. Still trying to decide... if I try to install myself then will buy OEM but if have to pay a shop they will put remanufactured for around $500 for part and labor.
Thanks for the video; I have a 2011 FA5 Si and everything in the engine bay is just so tight and cramped haha. The previous owner installed coil overs and I’m gonna take out the large amount of negative camber he was running cuz the insides of all the tires are wearing out wayyy faster than the rest of the tire on all 4.
Thanks for you videos bro. When my clutch needed replacing I was so close to having my neighbor do the job. Even though he was doing it for cheap I was interested in the challenge and it was your video that really helped inspire me do it. Now I do everything on my car and will usually check you out first when learning how to do it. I used to think the Honda manual was king of the hill for info. It's really disappointing how they either leave stuff out or just make it real complicated. Honestly I don't think I'd be able to work on my car how I do if it weren't for videos like yours
Great video man, much appreciated. Simple and straight to the point but if i may add, make sure you guys disconnect the battery. Disconnect the negative terminal before doin any removal of the starter.
Your video saved me in the middle of this work week as I use my si as my daily and knew the starter was dying each start I did. Was glad I didn’t have to take of the manifold. Video very helpful thank you
Thanks your video helped a lot. Doing it in this order really helps. I thought I was going to have to pull the intake manifold. After watching this realized I could just take off the starter before removing the bolt on top for the ground or whatever.
Tha k you so much for your help and guess what i broke the kck sensor lol i was trying really hard to be careful but it broke off really easy .. cost me about 120 to replace it .. luckily my auto store was able to order it the same day .. thank you thank you ..
Wow. Not too bad at all. Little bit of tight work but nothing crazy. And the starter isn't too expensive from what I can find. Mines been going bad on me now for the past couple weeks. Gonna change it before I get stranded. Thanks to your vid I won't be paying someone else to do it. Hope you're still wrenching and banging gears man.

Gerb great video! Car wouldn't start at work. Watched your video, got a duralast starter and swapped that sucker out in the parking lot. Never stop making vids! Or wrenching is going to be a pain in the ass for me.
I should've honestly just looked a tab bit harder for your video. I thought my starter was like the other r18s and I jacked up the car. I crawled under and didn't see it, then I kept digging online till I saw your video and a diagram. I wasted 1 to 2 hours looking for it and thinking about my approach angle. Looks way easier than the way people were doing it underneath.
Thanks for the video....I am in the process....other videos did not remove the frt cover and bulk head then I realized that was for just the civic not the si....no way to do the job without removing those items.

"Don't break the knock sensor." Broke mine in about 2 seconds trying to take off the connector. Replacement on Amazon for under 12 bucks... but it took 2 days. Autozone wanted 5 times that...
To anyone who is going to do this, take off the knock sensor before you start taking out the starter! Makes life much easier! And to anyone wondering, a k20a should fit.
My car struggles to start here and there. I tried cleaning the battery terminals and replaced them but it still struggle to start. Would you recommend that I try swapping the starter now or should I try something else to diagnose the issue? All the lights in my car flicker when I start the car as well. Radio light as well as lights on the headliner (they're LEDs).
Gerb how hard is this job really? Im about to do mine and have all the tools but I notice, im a good 30 mins slower than recommended times. How long did it take you and is there any tips? Im going to buy a new starter and knock sensor just incase.
I somewhat agree man.. Even though the engine is tight, the parts really aren't too bad to access. For example, some Honda's have alternators in the back of the engine.
Hey man I am new to your channel but dude I am loving it!!! I have a question for you? Have you ever come across an 8th gen si make a weird almost like a rattling noice just before and into hitting vtech?? I have a 2006 and it has done that ever since I picked it up 4 years ago now, with 184000kms and it now has 244000kms. It is bone stock. The only thing I have done is the starter now and just did that this past wknd. Also will be doing breaks this wknd. I didn't know that this was not normal because my car b4 was an auto 2000 si. So I never really knew how it really would sound when hitting vtech.
My mechanic did it. Now it starts asap. Has vsa and vsa🔺light, and knock sensor check engine. The knock sensor looks plugged in. What do you think the asshole did for both vsa lights? The triangle is always on but Vsa letters come on around 30mph. Thx in advance.
My civic had a bunch of wiring through the bulkhead. Found one other video on RU-vid where he’s having trouble with the same issue. You’ll have to break off all of the zip tie wiring clips. This video doesn’t show how to get the starter bracket off, mines tight as hell. Pretty fucked here don’t know what to do. Never walked away from my car with It in pieces like this. Warning I guess
