Replacing My Acrylic Extensions With A Builder Gel Overlay ft. My Natural Nails

Hi everybody,
Today I’m going to do my own nails today and I’m going to use the Builder Gel.
I’m going to start my soaking off my full cover tips, same as I’d soak of an extension, by removing the gel polish with a file and then wrapping in an acetone soak pad and foil. I’ll then prep the cuticle area with my file, but you can use a cuticle pusher and scraper. I’m going to make all my nails the same length and shape with a 240 grit file and then I’m ready to apply the builder gel.
I’m going to dehydrate the nails and then apply base coat. For the builder gel, I’m going to start at the cuticle area and sweep side to side, keeping contact with the nail to apply it to the nail, do the nails one at a time. Brush on a thin layer to add a little extra thickness and then wipe off the sticky layer - it’s very sticky on these. I’m then going to file them to perfect the shape. I’m going to finish with Beauty Beneath, Top Coat and cuticle oil.

Although I love all your work Kirsty, it’s actually nice to see some natural nails and shorter designs too. As you know it’s not practical for everyone to have certain length nails. So seeing these makes a nice change. Your nail look fabulous Kirsty x

Mr or Ms Audio Person - you have done a bang-up job on the audio levels. I can hear the banter between Kirsty and Adam without piercing my eardrums when Kirsty laughs. I LOVE when you do your own nails! These videos help me SO much because I do my own nails at home with gel polish or builder gel. Don't get me wrong I love ALL the videos but I'm never gonna do super long acrylic stiletto nails on myself. I'd love to see more gel polish designs that can be done on shorter nails. I'm thinking about trying to do tortoise shell nails next! 🐢💅

@@RhondaReally take the leap!! Try bottled builder and structure gels, it's not as hard as you think. Watch all the youTube videos you can find on them, Kristy Nao Nails, Suzie Nail Career Education, Liz Nail Hub and many other non professionals who give surprisingly great tips. Sure, you won't be able to do what they do, at least not right away but you will do more as you learn more and will be surprised at what you can do to create your own great looking nails.

I don’t have false nails. I usually have shellac on my natural nails as I love how it stays on and is shiny compared to nail varnish. I want to start doing my own nails. What do you suggest for natural nails? Gel, shellac, poly gel, acrylic? And what UV lamps? I got bought a gel set from boots and they just peeled off.

I’ve been doing my own nails for a while now and I loooooove builder gel for my natural nails. It keeps them strong and they’ve grown out longer than I could have ever imagined. I use a clear builder gel (two layers) then I use whatever gel polish on top. It nice because I can change up the color anytime without removing the clear builder gel. It’s a miracle in a bottle honestly!

ok so how long were your nails when u started ... i have yet to use my builder gel lol i have been using the gel polish and full cover nails my nails were growing img finally had some free edge and then they all started to break right when i was getting ready to use the gel lol now i have to wait once again ..... so my question is can thus been done on your nails if they are short

@@shauwn_oy14, absolutely can be done with short nails. I started with poly gel and dual forms until I had a fair amount of growth, then did builder gel overlays to continue. No forms being used after that. I can't type with long nails, so I keep mine short -with my nail just peeking over the top of my finger. I want to try solid gels now.

i'm still in the beggining of the video but i'm actually glad to see an overlay done by a professional once in a while, i really think people don't use their natural nails as a base often enough, i do this for mine because i really like the extra strenght it gives and i'vedoing this for YEARS now like almost 7 years already [ i just keep up the shape, and lenght i like, around 2cm, of natural below and overlay ontop, just as good as extensions but with that extra 'oomph' since for me at least it's way less common to have any lifting, breakage, and cracks in general]

I pretty much exclusively wear builder in a bottle these days (not this brand) and have found that you can get away with longer nails if you are willing to let the natural nail grow underneath for support. It’s a matter of preference , but an option nonetheless!

I love using poly gel but.....the dermatitis! The puss and scaley..... ew. Beautiful manicure on top. DISASTER underneath! Please please PLEASE do a video on the ingredients in cheap gel products that can cause dermatitis. To watch out for 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and ethyl cyanoacrylate. That these are 2 cheap products often used in the products found on websites like #Wish and #AliExpress. Products that companies like yours dont often use because of the amount of dermatitis they cause in people. PLEASE. The bullshit these websites are selling that cause real problems and real bills is inexcusable. People think....Oh! This is a cheap and fun way to try something new. Takes a while to receive but it's so cheap. Look at all these videos on RU-vid. None of these girls have issues. I'll TRY it. It's $10.00. NO. Dont do it Girls. My fingertips hurt. They got all thick underneath. They itched! Like crazy! It's been 3 weeks since I took it off and finally I'm seeing some improvement. Some. Its slow. Please do a video and show them why and what happens. Where you should absolutely invest every time and where it's not neccessary. How to use a product if you happen to find something questionable in it. What can happen to your face if you use something like this. You're awesome. I'm loving everything about your channel lately. Please make this video. Start a little educational trend that benefits people. Thank you for being you. I absolutely LOVE the walls that surround you when we get a shot of you looking up. Are you referring to contact dermatitis? If so, then that is caused by repeated exposure to products.

I have a whole stockpile of stuff I've bought from Aliexpress and none of them have ever caused dermatitis on me OR the others I've done nails for. Most of the stuff that you pay more money for from the bigger stores is made at the very places selling stuff on Aliexpress. It's cheaper because the middle-man is cut out. Please don't fool yourself. Higher price doesn't always mean any different quality.

Are you using builder gel, Gloria? If so I would recommend keeping any art as low as possible. So starting with a thin base coat (not building any strength yet), then creating your design, and then going in with clear builder to encapsulate your work. Hopefully that will help you with bulkiness!!

this left me with so many questions. 1. how does the builder react when the natural nail is very flexible. I did a gel overlay on a customer but her nails were flexible and the gel was hard gel that was very rigid and the result was that she had so much lifting. (and no it wasn't lack of prep, I prepped them within an inch of their life) 2. Out of the products you work with how would you class them when it comes to extensions? what product is more suitable to which length of nails. 3. I work in gels and if I'm making really long extensions I'm always unsure if gel is the best to go with or if I should try and train with the acrylic, does it really matter as long as the apex is high/solid enough?

From my experiences *disclaimer I am not a licenced nail tech* builder in a bottle has worked well with my nails which are very flexible but I can't go more than about 1/2 inch from where my nail bed ends. For length I usually use acrylic, but I have tried gel and have never liked the results. I know there are techs that can create a long nail that lasts with gel though. Again this is coming from someone thay is not licenced so I could be wrong...

As far as your 3rd question... once acrylic is set and hard gel is cured... they are pretty much the same density.... so as long as your structure is good the long gel extensions should be juuuust as sturdy as the acrylic counterpart. Of course, assuming prep and prime is top notch 🙃🤗 Try it... try putting acrylic on a nail form and do the same with gel and cure... if the thickness of both is the same it (should) have the same strength (of course, variables with product brands and blah blah... but I’m talking general terms, hope you understand what I mean lol) **disclaimer... I am a licensed nail tech lol... Light Elegance has great education on gel in their series with their very smart chemist... hope that helps 💕

I'm a trainee and I find that if I do gel with more length they don't last.. So I personally prefer acrylic for extended length. I mean half an inch is probably the max I would go to with gel anything more and they will just snap off me as I'm heavy handed.

Not a nail tech either, but Natasha Lee did a video explaining this. Gel in general is more flexible than acrylic. She said if your nails are more brittle, use a flexible medium like gel. If your nails are very bendy and flexible use something stiff like acrylic

@@madabouthollyoaks411 your right polygel is easier to place and doesn't run. but if you do one finger at time, do a very thin wet layer then sculpt with the builder gel in bottle before curing its not to bad, just don't fuss with it to much.

I first found builder in a bottle via Born Pretty and could have SWORN they were scamming me because A. They can't label their shit (on-going issue I have with them, I swear I have to re-label have their products just so I know WTF I' looking at) and B. they don't really mention it's usages and how to use it best, so of course, when you try to do something it can't (like length) and it doesn't work, you're side-eyeing it, so I'm glad you mentioned that it cant be used for those things before people dive in. I see Builder in a Bottle more as a re-enforcement and strength giver, a bit of oompth" for your natural nails. I use it for more hard-working clients when would probably break naturals and don't want the drama of acrylics or true gels. I AM going to look into your line of course when looking to replace my bottles as I want to see if yours are as prone to...tearing as the Asian brands. (for those wondering, I use Born Pretty and others because they're cheap and because my clients tend to frown at me pulling and a mysterious bag of powders from under my desk. I usually try to avoid markups and buy as close to the warehouse as I can...and most beauty products come from Asia these days. I am not however, exclusive and will stock anything of quality or at request).

I had my acrylics off and had an overlay, and the guy who did my nails said it is just an acrylic over the natural nail. I was surprised cos it still looks like I have acrylics still with the acrylic underneath my nail!! Plus my nails have been bleeding, like inside the nail bed I think the acrylic has aggravated my nail! Love your channel just found you!

Fab hun. I use my builder in a bottle to do infills. As I now have 4 children the youngest now being 6 months old I don't always have time to do a proper infill. Xxx

Thank you for posting this, I'd like to strengthen my nails but I don't have any equipment, could I just buy the building gel thingy on its own and just paint it on my nails without a UV lamp or anything? My nails break so easily and I hate it, I don't want long nails, 2-3 millimeters is enough just as long as they don't break.
