Replacing Speed Sensor (OSS Sensor) 2001 Ford Ranger 2.3L 2WD! Easy Fix!

Today we are replacing a dead speed sensor on a 2001 Ford Ranger 2.3L Rear Wheel Drive Pick-Up Truck. After driving around sometime I realized my ABS light kept flicking on and off and I was having some slow-downs on my odometer. Eventually, both the speedometer and odometer stopped working and we needed to get them fixed. But thankfully it was a simple fast and easy fix.
This works for 1998-2003 rear-wheel drive models.
Tools we used:
- 3/8 Socket and Ratchet
-Flat Head Screwdriver

I was waiting for the socket to snap because you were obviously using a lot of force and you are a pretty strong guy from seeing you clear the dams. Really enjoy your battle with the Beavers.

I would soak bolts like that with penetrating oil few days in advance. Snapping was so close. Part 2 of Ford repair series coming up soon?

isnt that the ABS sensor i just brought and replaced that so im still trying to locate the speed sensor

For my Ranger the output shaft speed sensor regulates the ABS, and the speedometer as well.

I have this exact same problem with my 2000 ford ranger and both the check engine lights and ABS lights are on did you find out what the problem was?

If your speedometer and odometer aren’t working then it’s the sensor described in this video. My ABS light still shows up but I don’t have any issues. If you have the check engine light on then the issue is related with a component of your engine.

Got a problem on my truck but is only the numbers that aren’t working. Changing the sensor will fix it ? What’s your experience on this please response to my comment and thanks for your help

Hey, if your speed gauge isn't working then it most likely is the speed sensor. But before you try to change it, try looking at the fuses for the instrument cluster or a fuse related to that and check it to make sure the fuse hasn't blown. If all of your fuses are in good shape then the next step would be to try the speed sensor. If you replace the speed sensor and it still isn't working, then it might be an issue with your instrument clusters worm gear which could have worn out.

@@gersonncastillo1787 I would check the fuses real quick to see if anything is blown out and then I would try to check the OSS sensor. In my case, I had moments where the speedometer would fire up, but the odometer wasn’t working. It turned out to be the OSS sensor either way.

Are there different designs to this sensor? I’m asking because AutoZone gave me one that’s longer with sharper metal tip.

Generally, there are different designs. The best way to know which design you have is by taking out the sensor you have installed. Consider what engine and transmission you have as well, if it’s automatic they have a different sensor. Mine is for a manual transmission.

@@golovinpropertyservices I have a 99 Ford Ranger 4cyl 2.5l 4x2 Rear WD. I bought a “transmission speed sensor” from AutoZone that is longer and sharper than the one you showed, but I have installed it yet as I found nothing on transmission similar to it (as it shape and two wire connection). In other words I might have to return this part and get a “neutral switch” / “transmission range sensor” which I do have on my transmission-so I change that and see if cures my symptoms of intermittent delayed shifting & slipping. On a side note: I looked at the rear since it’s a rear wheel drive, and found a sensor just like yours on my axle gear case. My understanding is it’s the “ABS sensor” but I’m not sure if it has anything to do with my symptoms. I took it out for inspection and looks good but light also change it just to be sure. Lol

@@lmt-adventures620 Ah, well in that case we have different symptoms. My issue was that the speed gauge and odometer weren’t working. My issue was the Output Shaft Sensor on the rear differential. If you’re having an issue with the transmission, slipping for example, then it might be the actual components inside of the transmission which would be a worst case scenario. How many miles does your ranger have?

@@golovinpropertyservices 200k miles I might drop the pan and see if I can fit it myself by replacing one or the electrical components in there. If it’s mechanical then I might have to bring it in and pay 850$ lol

@@lmt-adventures620 Go online and check the ranger forum, there’s a website specifically where people post about their rangers. They have lots of great information and I’m sure you’d be able to find exactly where the issue could be.

I have the same car. Mine will sometimes stop working but it’s bouncy like all over the place and then the car starts to run “choppy”.. it’s in line with whenever the needle takes a dive to 0. Do you think that would be the speed sensor or is it my transmission?

If your car is running “choppy” then I would say you have an issue else where and it’s not the sensor. The sensor in my case failed and the odometer would stop running and the speedometer would kick on occasionally. If you have an issue where you are giving the vehicle gas and you feel jolts or something else, you might have an issue somewhere else. If you have poor idle, it’s probably the MAF sensor or maybe even a dirty air filter.

@@golovinpropertyservices I replaced the air filter with a cold air intake yesterday. Could’ve been that. Cleaned all the sensors in there too. And the car has always idled fine. Occasionally the mph needle will start to take dives down towards 0. When it’s doing that the car will react with the needle. For example, when the needle takes a dip down, the car feels like it’s being pull back if that makes sense. Almost like it’s losing power or it’s straining for air. The speed will stay the same, no power loss. You can feel the change in how the cars running and it’s in relation to the needle when it’s jumping up and down. It’s began to sit at 0mph more often recently that’s what leads me to believe it could be the OSS sensor. I’m replacing the OSS sensor today. We’ll see what happens. If not, I’ll replace the MAF sensor. I’ll update y’all if anyone runs into the same issue.

@@RuskiLev I see, I think it’s definitely an issue not relating to the OSS sensor. When mine went out, I didn’t have any driving issues. So if it’s giving you a hard time while driving, it should be something else. You should probably be getting a check engine light if it’s an engine related issue.
