This video from Sears PartsDirect shows how to replace the activating switch in a downdraft vent. The activating switch triggers the gear motor that raises and lowers the air vent. If your air vent won’t rise when you press the button, you may need to replace the activating switch.

Transcript:
The activating switch triggers the gear motor that raises and lowers the air vent. If the activating switch doesn't start the gear motor, replace it using the steps in this video. Wear work gloves to protect your hands. Put the air vent in the raised position. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Remove the mounting screws and pull the switch cover off. Remove the screws from the switch bracket. Slide the switch bracket down and then pull the bracket out. Pull the knob off the speed control switch stem. Remove the mounting nut. Pull the speed control switch out of the switch bracket. Disconnect the activating switch wires. Cut off the wire tie. Remove the activating switch and switch bracket. The new activating switch includes a new bracket. Secure the wires with a wire tie. Connect the activating switch wires. Reinstall the speed switch on the switch bracket and secure it using the mounting nut. Reinstall the knob on the stem of the speed control switch. Slide the switch bracket into the vent. Adjust the switch bracket so that the activation switch lightly touches the membrane pad. Tighten the bracket screws firmly. Tip: Mounting the switch bracket up too high will keep the switch depressed and the vent will raise and lower continuously when power is restored. Reinstall the switch cover and secure it using the mounting screws. Reconnect the power cord.

How do I adjust the gap on the end with the control after installing the switch.

The switch bracket has slotted mounting holes that allow you to adjust the gap between the membrane control pad and the switch stem. Insert the bracket into the vent and loosely install the screws through the slotted holes in the bracket. With the screws loosely installed in the switch bracket, you’ll be able to move the bracket slightly to position the switch properly. Position the bracket so that the membrane control pad barely touches the switch stem. Hold the bracket steady in that position and press the membrane control pad to see if it activates and releases the switch. Reposition the switch bracket and re-test the operation if necessary until the membrane control pad activates and releases the switch stem properly. Hold the bracket in place and tighten the switch bracket mounting screws firmly once you position the bracket properly. We hope this additional information helps. If you further assistance, let us know.

I am having an issue of the vent constantly going up and down unless I unplug the unit. I have played around with the activator switch and even removed the top "lid" that includes the membrane...but it's still moving up and down no matter what. Does this indicate a faulty activating switch? Would you recommend replacing it? Or may it be something else? If I unplug it while it is fully in the "up" position and the plug it back in, then the unit will stay up and the fan will run... strange situation.

A bad travel limit switch could also cause the vent to move up and down constantly. Let us know the model number of your vent and we'll try to help you with some troubleshooting tips.

@@bass4chas Here's a page that provides general troubleshooting tips for the problem that you're describing: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/symptom/downdraft-ventilation-system-repair/1234584/goes-up-and-down-continuously/dd9144 . You may be able to fix the problem by adjusting the up/down switch membrane. If that switch is bad or a limit switch is defective, you may have a difficult time finding parts for that model. We have only a limited supply of parts for that model on this page: www.searspartsdirect.com/model/2kmcn9l3zi-001429/magic-chef-hv363-range-hood-parts . We hope this information helps.
