In this video, we replace a MAP sensor (amzn.to/3bZHSCz, P/N 0261230234) in a 2013 Volkswagen Passat. The owner was experiencing an intermittent check engine light. After scanning for the codes, we found a code for the MAP sensor. The owner purchased a new Bosch MAP sensor and a throttle body O-ring - about $30 or so for both.
This was a pretty easy job. The worst part was dropping the single torx screw that holds the MAP sensor in place onto the plastic tray below the engine :)

For what its worth- I too dropped the screw down into the pan underneath the engine. Fortunately, it was easy to find by tapping on the plastic pan and listening to the sound of the screw. I decided that one time losing it and finding it was good fortune that I did not want to risk my luck again a second time. I solved the problem by tying a length of thread under the head of the screw and attaching the other end to a spare screwdriver. Once the screw was seated in its hole I just pulled the thread and continued tightening it home. Easy peasy.

Thanks for the video. Just replace mine of my 2010 MK6 golf - same engine. I can confrm that you dont have to remove the trottle body, You just have to move away the big electrical cable in the plastic tubing - just unclip and move. You need a T20 screwdriver. After sensor instaled. the electrical connector would not clip in place. After carefull examination, I conclude ttat he gasket at the botom of the connector have expand. I end up sanding about 1-2 mm of plastic of the sensor connector part utill it clip. I coat everything with silicone to make shure that water wont go in,.

Great video, I was inspired by your "aha" moment that it could be an easier job and was able to remove the sensor by simply removing the single torx screw on the left side and wiggling it out. Took me about 5 minutes of being careful not to drop the screw as it was coming out and some gentle wiggling. Definitely a tight area to work in though. I would say for a more complete job, removing the throttle body is important to clean within the intake manifold. So I think the way you did it is ultimately the best way to do it, however in a pinch it's able to be done pretty easily. Cheers!

Nice video....Same layout as my Jetta...Been getting a P0106 code now and again...Changed the PCV valve some months ago(did NOT do the whole cover which is a $100 to $200 part, just the $15 circular piece...Did the throttle body a couple weeks ago because of another code / TPP sensor issue (Should have replaced the MAP sensor then when the TB was off, just as a preventive measure, but there you are)…...Anyway, this video is really good and is inspiring me to do the MAP sensor in the next couple weeks...I agree, looks like it can be done W/O having to remove the TB (at least I sure hope so, and will know soon enough)….(Yeah, dropping the screws into the engine area really sucks...especially when you don't readily find them lying on the ground)

@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC I try to use the CRC GDI valve cleaner, but I couldn't find the mass airflow sensor on my Passat. I watched your video to see is there any sign of it. @@carlosgraphic if you're having a problem with the MAP sensor, which is really just a simple pressure, best just to replace it. I don't know of any way to clean them or if that would help.

This map sensor looks very similar to the secondary injection pressure sensor..Autozone gave me the map sensor instead of the secondary injection pressure sensor. I'm assuming they don't carry the secondary injection pressure sensor..

Great video. I replaced my MAP sensor along with the pcv diaphragm today. This video helped! And go figure I dropped the torx screw for the sensor. Will the code clear itself after awhile or do I need to track down a scanner and clear it manually?

Pro tip: the sensor typically has only one screw and you don't need to remove the surrounding parts to remove it if you can fit your hands to remove the only screw without dropping it into the bottomless abyss that VW engine bay is.

Great Video! SO helpful. I have the 2013 5- cyl passat as well. Do you have any experience with the codes P2101 or P0638? it suddenly started to run terrible and will barely stay running sounds terribly out of timing. any ideas?
@MikkoRantalainen
@MikkoRantalainen 10 месяцев назад
As usual, if you have VAG (VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda) engine with an error code, search for "ross tech P2101". That seems to be Throttle Valve Actuator Module (J338). Some cars have plastic throttle body and the throttle valve setup is a metal bar rotating in plastic hole which gets too loose over time and the valves start to catch the intake manifold body. Or broken wiring seems to be another common cause (engine vibration eats the plastic away from the wire and either the wire shorts or cuts away).

can a dirty/faulty map sensor cause transmission issues (roughness/wrench dash warning)?

It can cause symptoms that might feel like a transmission problem, yes. It would be very difficult to conclude that for certain though without examining the vehicle and the symptoms in more detail

How and/or why did you determine the MAP sensor was bad and needed to be replaced as opposed to dirty and merely requiring a good cleaning with a can of MAP sensor cleaner?
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC 3 года назад
It has been a while since I recorded this video but I believe there was a check engine light on. MAP sensors are pressure/vacuum sensors and normally can't be cleaned. You might be thinking of a MAF sensor, which can be cleaned using specialized cleaning products.

How in the HELL does the connector to the map sensor come off? Mine won't move and I don't want to break it. I've pushed on the clip type button on bottom while jiggling the connector with no results. I pulled. Jumped up and down. Swore. Nothing works.

It has been a while since I recorded this video so I don't remember the specifics, but some automotive connectors have secondary positive retention clips. Many of the ones I have seen are red and need to slide out of the way to allow the primary clip to move. Again I don't remember if that applies to thos specific vehicle but it might be what's going on

@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC 4 года назад
You might be thinking of MAF (mass air flow) sensors. They can sometimes be cleaned to restore performance. MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensors generally cannot. While they accomplish the same objective, their principle of operation is different. MAP sensors also require more complex software to calculate air flow.
@US96Mark

No, I meant MAP sensors. Just seen it in another videos. There is oil pools on top those sensors and it sends inadequate signal. What's the sure way to check that the sensor is dead or faulty?
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC 4 года назад
@@US96Mark Most MAP sensors I have seen are simple 5v analog devices with 3 pins: 5v reference, ground and signal. To properly test it, you would need to know the correlation between voltage on the signal pin and pressure/vacuum - which may differ from sensor to sensor. I find it easiest to do this with an oscilloscope but you might be able to do this with some multimeters Quite often it is simply easier to replace the sensor when the computer logs the appropriate code and all other possible sources (such as bad wiring, bad 5v reference, bad ground, etc ) are eliminated.

@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC OK. Thank you, Man. I might replace it. Here is another question: after replacing spark plugs and ignition coils, in a bout half a day the engine started to make whistling noise. It quite loud and high pitch. It doesn't change with speed or RPM. It actually goes away when i accelerate and stays off when car rolls around 55-60 MPH, than when i accelerate again it starts or if i come to complete stop the sound gets louder and RPM began fluctuate. Any idea what could it be? Thanks.

I cleaned mine with MAF cleaner and compressed air (I know it’s not a MAF sensor) - also changed that round PCV bladder, and it all seems to be working ok now - didn’t have the cash to buy a new MAP sensor or I would have changed it ... I also cleaned out all the oil build-up. Reset code and been driving two days so far, checked for any new codes didn’t have any and engine light is still off - fingers crossed 🤞

Would it be a safe practice to remove battery terminals?
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC 3 года назад
I generally only do that if the procedure I am doing for sure needs the battery disconnected, such as for airbag service, unless I know for sure the car either doesn't have a radio that will lock itself or the owner has confirmed that they have the unlock code. I used to disconnect batteries on a regular basis until once, years ago, a radio got locked out on a friend's car. They had to take the car to the dealer and pay a fee to get the radio unlocked. I think with the advent of VIN locking, where a given component will only work on a vehicle with that same VIN, that might be less of a concern.

Joe, I have a 2012 VW Passat 2.5L SE Model. The dealer is telling me that this job also requires them to do a SYM Update otherwise, the Computer brain won't properly communicate with the latest version of the Manifold Sensor. Is this true? Have you knowledge of this alleged SYM Update?
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC 3 года назад
I'm sorry I'm not aware of that. That aside though, a MAP sensor is normally a simple analog pressure transducer. Unless the sensor calibration was changed I can't imagine it would also depend on the software update... I can't guarantee that what I'm telling you is true it's - based on my experience with electronics and other vehicles.

@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC I found the Technical Bulletin regarding the SVM Software update. Apparently, the Service Rep didn't accurately explain the why and wherefores of needing to update the software. But, my independent research turned up this NHTSA bulletin which more accurately explains the need for the SVM Update. Here is a link: static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/SB-10069633-2280.pdf

@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC Based on my understanding of the Tech Bulletin for this SVM software update, the update doesn’t have any negative effect on the MAP you installed. However, the improved software functionality addresses deficiencies already existing. For example, I have a 2012 Passat B7, and on cold start the vehicle has always had an excessively high idol. Well apparently the high idol is the direct result of the glitches in the SVM software which are addressed by the update. These are the stated fixes/improvements: P0106 - Manifold Absolute Pressure Range / Performance P0507 - Idle Control System RPM Higher than Expected P050A - Cold Start Idle Air Control System Performance
