An Apple ProFile 5mb hard disk drive lost the magic smoke, leading to a RIFA capacitor replacement. Let's see if it can come alive once again.

This was the world's first intelligent hard disk drive. It has its own operating system with extensive onboard diagnostics and presents itself with a simple parallel interface, requiring no dedicated hard disk controller. It performs a very thorough self-test when it powers up- this is why it takes so long before it is ready to be used. There's even a tool called the USBWidEx available which allows for servicing these drives with a modern computer- and it also works with the later Widget drives.

That's incredibly cool, thank you for the heads up!

That's called having embedded software (probably in a ROM chip). An operating system is something a little big more specific, it typically refers to software that provides certain core services to other software that is entirely separate. This is just an intelligent hard disk drive, but most peripherals are intelligent these days.

RIFA madness strikes again! It's usually the ones on the primary side that fail, often in the line filter that contains 3 of them. If there are any others on the primary they should be replaced too.

Great fix. If you are going to keep it, I would recommend recapping the whole thing due to the age of the capacitors and the rare factor of these drives. Glad to see the drive still works.

I seriously considered it, but I'm going through that phase of wondering if I should proactively replace capacitors or try to keep it original until something goes wrong. I may go back and take care of the rest of them. At least the RIFAs tend to just make it non functional, rather than causing active harm.

@@breakallthethings If they look okay and aren't leaking, you can probably leave them alone. That said, it might be worth removing a few and seeing if they still have the rated capacitance. If they don't a full recap might be worth it just to ensure proper operation in the future.

New Sub! Detroit, Mich. I havent seen a ProFile in Years, but I defiantly havent ever used one. I wanna say the Computer Lab in Elem School Had one on the Lisa or Mac that was Head of the Class, the Apple ][s were linked to it as a Floppy Server I believe

5mg would of been a lot and expensive back when it was new

I kept thinking about how much I could have done with 5mb on my Commodore, this must have been well used.

Good eye! I haven’t found a match for my IIgs yet, but had an extra 1080 that will work in a pinch. :)

You know back in the 1980's smoking was still allowed.

It looks like the RIFA cap was a 610 volt and your replacement is only 310 volts. If I'm reading the caps right you may have more smoke to replace soon. If I'm reading them correctly... Also even though the other "RIFA" caps look ok I would still replace all of them. They can't be trusted.
@breakallthethings
@breakallthethings 26 дней назад
Good eye, but the 610 is unrelated to voltage. The other side shows a 250V part.

@@breakallthethings Thanks for telling me what the voltage actually is. I still think I would change all RIFA caps just so you can protect the other circuit board from a possible over-voltage if any short out. I enjoyed your video and also subscribed. Thanks
