Replacing the thermostat housing on a mk6 fiesta

Here is a rough guide of how I have replaced the thermostat housing on my mk6 1.25 fiesta, I am not a qualified mechanic and I learn from doing and reading the manual so please understand this might not be 100% correct. However it worked for me and here is how it's done. Warning disconnect the battery first haha.

Just done this with help from this video. Longest time for me was getting the hoses off the thermostat housing. You need to get them moving by twisting and pulling up and down. For people who asked about getting the alternator back on: Put the belt on the alternator and put the bottom nut in. Do not fully tighten it. Swing the alternator up and apply right pressure to line up the top bolts. Evenly tighten the two top bolts. When bleeding the system, there is a bleed screw on the top right of the radiator if you were to look at it from insdie the engine. Undo that nut and pure coolant in to the expansion tank until coolant comes out of the bleed screw. Tighten the bleed screw. Put the cap on the expansion tank and run the car at 3000 rpm for 2 minutes. Top up coolant if necessary . Run the car again at 3000rpm for 2minutes. Top up coolant if necessary. Make sure you've got hot air in the cabin and you should be good to go. The whole job took me about 5 hours. Never want to do it again. I was dead after that.

Great video and a life saver for time. Young lads MK6 was dripping, slowly, and i traced it back to those two pipes but unaware of the housing unit failure. This video showed me the problem which i have including the exact same drip and drip route (along the block to the sump). So a great help, thanks.

Very good video. The original hose clamps will tighten up as rubber hose sinks over time. This is what the spring design is for. You may have to keep an eye on those replacement clamps and tighten them up in year or so.

Brilliant video! I had a leak from my Mk5 Fiesta which was dripping out from near the gearbox. As water follows its own course, sometimes it's difficult to trace the origin and I didn't have a clue. After finding your video on a search (my leak was dripping underneath in roughly the same place as yours in the other video), I put an endoscope camera under the thermostat housing and voila! Thanks so much as I was expecting a hefty garage bill but that job, I can do myself. Cheers!

Lewis Worbey that's good that you found a short cut and saved yourself abit of time, sometimes the pipes coming off the housing are very hard to removed and need abit more access to try them off. However what iv shown in the video is what's listed in the haynes manual.

lets say £20 for the housing, £20 for the thermostat (might as well ge t a new one while your there) £20 for the 5ltr of coolant. it's really recommended to change the drive belt as well if you're gonna remove the alternator so that's another £20 that's £80 in total if you did it yourself. if a garage did it they would proberbly charge maybe £30 an hour(can't see them taking more than an hour to do it) that would come to £110 maybe a bit more. the question is , is it worth all the hastle doing it myself or pay a little extra and let the garage do it? the thing about this kind of job is the great satisfaction you get when it's all finished and you;ve done it yourself. decisions, decisions. love these mk6 fiesta vids i'm learning a lot of stuff, keep up the great work mate.
@deltaunit7
@deltaunit7 Год назад
Hey thank you for watching my vids, love the feedback. I think a garage would charge more than £110 tho, main stealers would be easily double because they have to use OEM parts which hold a higher price. Where as a decent independent garage using quality aftermarket parts like bosch would be £170 ish. The video shows the job is pretty straight forward, and is definitely something the home mechanic could do with a bag of spanners and some time.
@alexe5461
@alexe5461 Год назад
@@deltaunit7 yep you're right. garages would only use genuine oem parts so the price would be a lot more than £110 thanks for pointing that out. i used kseal to stop the coolant leak but i'd like to change it as soon as possible. they say kseal is a permanant fix but i don't want the housing to start leaking again.

Nice one pal - great video. I tried to do this today, same model as yours. Reassembled and have a pretty bad leak. Going to tackle it again tomorrow. I know you said you used silicon but I would rather avoid that. I am guessing I didn't tighten the housing enough. Did you have trouble getting those nuts tight? Pretty shocking manoeuvring to get into those tight spaces. Anyway, thanks again for the video. very useful.
@deltaunit7
@deltaunit7 5 лет назад
Hello Stuart, I used silicon sealant because I know these thermostats housing warp over time and the silicone sealant will move with the part even if it warps it will still seal, didn't really fancy doing the job again if it happen. I had no trouble getting them tight if I remember rightly they are only M6 bolts so you don't have to swing off them. Hope this helps

Thanks for this vid. Just did the cam belt water pump put everything back together to find that the bloody housing is now leaking! Now I got to take the alternator back off again ahhh! Anyway, and idea what to torque the bolts too? Im guessing 10nm thanks in advance
@deltaunit7
@deltaunit7 6 лет назад
mike hunt hey Mike good work! I presume you mean the torque for the thermostats bolts? I can't remember what it says in the Manuel, but I remember not following it and good wrist tight and that's don't the trick for me. I also used bathroom sealant around the edge of the thermostats to form a better seal and if it even warps in the future this will hopefully allow the seal to move with it an still prevent it leaking

Great video, helped me out on my daughters car👍🏻.. I’ve another fiesta 1.2 and I’m changing the engine..to a 1.6.. Was the engine swap difficult? Can I just drop a 1.6 in or will I need Ecu, loom etc Or can they be used from the original one
@deltaunit7
@deltaunit7 3 года назад
Hello, thanks for the feedback. Iv only swapped like for like 1.2 for 1.2, so can't comment on the ECU and loom going to a 1.6, I would image they are different tho as the ECU will need programming to fuel according to the engine size and injectors etc

Hi again. I had a quick reccy this morning before i start doing the job properly. What did you use to get to the 8mm bolts on the thermostat housing? It looks like there is not a lot of room . Did you use a socket? Cheers
@deltaunit7
@deltaunit7 7 лет назад
Simon Smith I used small 1/4 inch drive socket with an extension on it with the 8mm socket on the end, if you can't get at it try looking from underneath or use a knuckle joint on your socket. Hope this helps, Also refer to the start of the video as view the engine out of the car for a clear view where the bolts should be :)

Hey dude, great video :) if my heat gage stops working does that also mean that my thermostat is faulty? Thanks in advance
@deltaunit7
@deltaunit7 6 лет назад
Arqam Smith hello, when you say heat guage do you mean temperature reading on your dash? If so not always, it depends what your reading is doing, it should slowly rise to about mid way or read 90 degrees then stay at that temperature, if it doesn't get to that temp it would suggest your thermostat is stuck open, if it's to hot that would suggest alot more..... loss of water/ maybe head gasket or simply termostate stuck closed. Either way you'll have to remove to thermostat housing to get at it an replace it. This video shows you how to get at it. However I don't fully know what the problem is.

Simon Smith the only belt that needs to be removed is the belt that goes round the altinator, any other belts are fine and don't need touching. When you reconnect the belt back to the altinator the main altinator bolt pull the altinator and the belt back into alignment once tight

how did u get your aux belt back on? Mine is really hard to get back on. Impossible nearly! I have air con though.
@deltaunit7
@deltaunit7 7 лет назад
Simon Smith mine is the non aircon model however i would have thought it would go back on the same way, the belts used for these are stretch fit and thus you need to put it around all the pullies first including the altinator pullies before fixing the altinator in place, the altinator has 3 bolts 2 at the top and 1 at the botton, do the one at the bottom first while the belt is on it, then as you feet the top to bolts in they should locate the tread with a bit of a push to them put tension back on the belt. Hope this helps
