www.sailrite.com/Replacing-your-Halyard-Rope-Video This video illustrates how to change your halyard rope in your sailboat. Did you know that rope halyards are easier to handle and significantly lighter than wire halyards. Sta-Set X is an ideal replacement for wire halyards on cruising yachts. For race boats and large cruising yachts, consider T-900.

"Whip it !! Whip it Good !!" (Lyrics by Devo)🤩🤩 Awesome video. I'll be replacing my Topping Lift in the same manner shown in this video👍👍👍👍👍

Just one comment on the figure 8 knot. Leave about 5 inches of line from the figure 8 to the end of line. That way if the knot gets into a cleat or clutch, you have a few inches to easily grab.

Good job Matt! I just changed both halyards today following your great instructions. It was very easy. The new sta-set ropes looks really nice on my S2 7.3. Thanks for the video.

Fantastic explanation. I saw other videos that showed one how to snake the halyard through the mast. But your way seems the best way to go if halyard is still in the mast. Thanks, I will now try this with confidence.

Thanks for the video. We've been slowly replacing our running rigging and I've been putting off the main halyard, outhaul, and reefing lines because of having to whip them. I'd seen other videos, but yours looks the simplest. Thanks again for taking the time to do this.

"If you try that with tape, you'll lose it every time" So true! My husband just learned it the hard way. And stepping a Catalina 30 tall mast is not an option . It's climbing :-) Thanks for the video!

@tomperanteau You are correct, I screwed this up and did not notice. Sometimes talking and doing don’t work at the same time. The free end of the line should go under the loop (not over), then under the primary leg and back over through the loop. Thanks for catching this.

Staset braid can be eye spliced with a thimble to make the best possible connection

Thanks so much for the video.Question? If you had a 40 ft Hunter with a mast height of 60 ft. How heavy is too heavy for the person going aloft?

It would be nice if there was a faster way to attach the ends for pulling. I have to do so many of these

Ha ha, I learned something: that annoying torsional twist knot you get in lines is called a "hockle". Gonna use that one on my boat.

@ Gitta, You are using the wrong tape !!! I use sports tape about 8-10 inches with the bitter ends of the lines in the middle. Start on one side of 2" wide sports tape and roll the two lines together. Then tape the middle where the two lines join each other and the ends of the tape where it touches the lines. Have done this hundreds of times. And NEVER, NEVER had the two lines part. Way over kill. But you should be careful as the new halyard enters and exits the mast head.

I'm going to the internal Jib Halyard Furler cable for Reefing cause of the Snapfurler Maybe more people see this video, everybody will replace all their dirty, rotten, gray mold, outdated ropes:) Look how pretty that rope is, and it in comes in Red to:)

thanks for the video. can I have all your old lines? they look to be in better shape than mine. by the way, its not a halyard rope or a halyard line. a halyard is a line. a specific kind of line. so if you say halyard line, it's like saying a line line.

So weird, I looked everywhere on a bunch of boats for ‘halyard rope’ and only found halyards and lines! Its like ropes don’t even exist on the boats I’m on… hehehe

Use a halyard knot at the shackle, not a bowline.
@briansrensen8204
@briansrensen8204 5 лет назад
You tied that bowline all wrong - will hold nothing and it's not suited for halyards anyways. If you are not splicing halyards, then you should use either a halyard knot or double fisherman's loop on a schackel. Those are the only knots with strength similar to splicing + they are compact and will not get stuck in the top of the mast. (Bowline knot has only around 40% strength of a splice.)

I get that sailrite is a reputable company so why are they still suggesting we as viewers learn from someone who doesn't even know how to tie a bowline? (3:25)

And whipping the end of the line instead of melting it.
