Report: "Disconnect" Between Darvin Ham and Lakers Players. Has He Lost the Locker Room?

The Lakers played a shameful game Wednesday night, losing at home to a Miami squad that didn't have Jimmy Butler in a game that looked worse than the score. (And the score wasn't good.)
They were listless, turnover-happy and wildly out of sorts, the next step in a post-IST progression to really bad basketball. The vibe has clearly been off, based on body language and postgame comments and on-court performance. On Thursday, what was supposition and background chatter was pushed front and center by a report from Shams Charania and Jovan Buha at The Athletic, detailing a "disconnect" between Darvin Ham and the roster, based in part on Ham's rotation choices and a lack of clarity around what the team was trying to do.
So how big a problem is this? How much of LA's recent struggles are a function of the players? Of Ham? Of context?
Can they pull themselves out of this before it costs Ham his job? (Is that the goal, if you're a Lakers player?)
Clearly not everything happening with/to the Lakers is Ham's fault. The front office and the players themselves have plenty of responsibility as well. But multiple things can be true at once - Darvin can be dealt a difficult hand, and still not navigate things effectively. Where has he gone wrong? What has happened that has prevented the Lakers from recapturing last year's late season success? How has the context changed?
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: The Athletic reports that Darvin Ham and the Lakers roster are not on the same page.
SEGMENT 2: What has been the issue? Is it individual decisions, or the larger vision?
SEGMENT 3: The context of this year vs. last is very different. Has Ham adjusted accordingly?

Been saying that Ham is the problem. Not using good lineups or giving the team a set identity. He also runs 0 plays & has bad & inconsistent rotation habits. Any coach we have will look good defensively bc we have AD so I don’t even really give him credit there. Not sure who his replacement should be but having him waste this season would be a major let down.

andy made a really good point at 23:40 every team has some sort of weakness. youre not gonna be a perfect team and u have to coach around some of this stuff. The nuggets are a top defense despite jokic being very slow footed because of of their scheme and how the team covers for him. Teams like the warriors with small guards will hedge and recover to protect them on defense. there are ways to hide the deficiencies in a lot of these lineups

This is my point with Darvin Ham dude cant coach. Been saying this since last year as Heat have both Duncan Robinson & Tyler Herro not very good defensively but they made it work why we can’t? I saw Rui missed mid range but got benched but Cam & Prince had way longer leash

Look how the Heat used the zone to confuse the Lakers into mistake after mistake playing small, slow guys like Herro, Lowry, Love and Robinson around Bam. Every other coach of a supposedly good team figures out a way to keep his best players on the floor. Darvin has two plans, Plan A, everyone is healthy and LeBron is feeling it and the Lakers win, or Plan B, stick his hands in his pockets throw some shit at the wall and hope the other team plays bad enough to lose.

Last year's problem was Bron & AD having stretches of absences. The ship was righted after the New Look Lakers came in, but lacked enough playing time together to get over a cohesive Denver team. This year though, multiple players are out, AD & Bron are giving their all but still no continuity on our team.😢 It is looking like we're just playing aimlessly after winning the IST, and i guess someone has to be the blame. This is a perfect storm of problems, with injuries and lack of shooting being a big part of the problem. But at the same time, the coaching staff must accept its share of the blame for making poor, almost reckless decisions about the starting line up and the rotations. In the process, the Coach Ham seems indecisive, like he is lost and panicking, and that has an impact on the confidence and morale of the team. Not sure the team will be able to break out of the death spiral on their own without a major move to shake things up.

I hate to say it, but I hope the Lakers lose against the Grizzlies, and the next, and the next, until Pelinka comes out of hiding and has no other possible alternative but to fire Darvin Ham. If the Lakers missed the playoffs this year holy shit you can best believe that Anthony Davis and LeBron won’t be there next year and what Lakers fans don’t understand is the way the league is there are no players that are looking to leave teams. To assume that Ham is the problem is to assume that this is a balanced roster. Injuries aside, the players aside from Anthony Davis, Lebron James, and Austin Reeves have not played to their standards. Ham may be responsible only in the sense that he is not coaching this team, and demanding better performances. But it is NOT because of some combination or lineup that Ham is not putting out there. Any combination or lineup would be trash, because the players are playing below standard. It starts with the players.

Almost made it through a whole episode without mentioning the IST. The whole NBA basically clowned the Lakers into thinking that these regular season games were something special. Adam Silver dangled some pocket money and the Lakers fell for it. LBJ partying hard with his ski goggles as if it was a real title. Now the team is in off season mode a few months earlier than the rest of the league, mentally and physically exhausted. Remember how Ham was supposed to be the big off season move? Remember how the front office was not completely dysfunctional? Remember how Rob Pelinka was all of a sudden making amazing trades? Remember how the draft picks were amazing? It was all a mirage. There is so much wrong with this team and this organization. The expected solution will be to make lots of marginal trades etc. This is what you get with an aging superstar on a massive contract, a clueless owner who asks everybody for their opinion and a guy who seems to spend most of his time on a tanning bed.
@Oberonz1
@Oberonz1 9 месяцев назад
Probably your best show since I started watching. You nailed all the missteps Ham has made, but you didn’t state the root. The root was DLo and his imminent trade. His contract was built to be traded and so many moves were done to prop DLo up in the face of bad play it set the tone for the eventual collapse of Ham’s credibility. Austin got benched when it should have been DLo. The cards fell from there. Add injuries and LeBron rationing himself and you get a malaise of mammoth proportions. Start Reeves, give him Cam or Vando to cover him on Dee, start Rui when healthy, Wood till Rui gets back. Vando or Cam/DLo/Max/Prince and god help us Hayes is your bench. It’s not perfect but it makes some better sense than the mess we got now. The only major gaping flaw is backup 5, Hayes is unplayable right now but it is what it is😐👍🏿

So this is all on D-Lo who was supposed to be benched early in the season for what exactly? AR was playing horrible and D-Lo was playing great. So you believe the Lakers resigned D-Lo to just trade him and only played him to make him more tradeable?? Next 5: Memphis, Clippers, Toronto, Phoenix, Utah. 4-1 is very doable. So is 1-4. Two main issues for Ham 1 He's not a good coach. Not much can be done about that other than firing him. The odds are very high the Lakers are not going to fire him unless they totally implode. 2 Lost the locker room For all his flaws Ham is basically a decent guy, players don't hate him, they just lost confidence. I think if Ham calls a team meeting and does a mea culpa: "you know what, I tried a lot of things looking for something that worked. Some of them probably weren't good ideas and I did a very poor job communicating with you guys. From here on things are going to be a lot clearer and a lot simpler". Do that and he has a chance of getting the locker room mostly back. I doubt players are going to really believe in him but I think it will at least get to the point where they feel better about the situation and the team doesn't have a lot of negativity dragging it down. At this point the psychology of the team is just as important as the Xs and Os. It would benefit the team to sign some minimum contract old vet who is a great locker room guy who can be a good influence. They never have to see the floor. Ideally somebody LeBron played with earlier in his career whom he respects.

Really i wish he would hire an assistant coach specifically to help with in game management the way football teams have offensive and defensive coordinators and sometimes hire clock management guys but it would be shocking if that happens. This will come to a head very soon, I suspect. If the Lakers come out with the same aimlessness, apathy and dogshit energy they did against the Heat, the Grizzlies will beat them at home by 25 and the Clippers will beat them in Crypto by 40 and they will do everything in their power to humiliate and mock the Lakers and their fans. The players know that. Ham and his coaching staff know that. Pelinka and Jeanie know that. If the Lakers STILL just roll over and die in those two must-win games against critical, hated conference rivals, then we’ll know whatever else is true, the players have quit on Darvin and Darvin is out of ideas. At that point all the Darvin apologists who say “oh he’s not that bad” “he was good last year for about a third of the season” “things could get even worse without him” will have to concede that no, he has to go. You cannot be the leader of the Los Angeles Lakers and take getting humiliated by your rivals lying down at an inflection point like this, unable to even pick yourself up because your hands are still in your pockets. I don't feel Frank lost the loacker room, maybe russ, but he's not the locker room. The team just sucked. They were old and way too small

@@DyLemmaOG they were trash together last year as well but they made it work with vando as the point of attack. It’s the best lineup they have so far.

Now all you need is to get rid of James to allow the franchise to move forward

Ham just sees himself in sub par players and his doing his best to try to put them in the game. He's can't separate himself from that. He's not that good of a coach. Yo Lakers we gave him a shot. Great. Hell get paid..bur can't have these role players as starters. Change has to happen now. Still think they should've hired Ty Lou from the start.

Next big topic of conversation as the season slowly sinks into the LaBrea tar pits: What happens with LeBron after the season? Personally i would love for him to agree to be traded. Not holding my breath. AD seems like he has finally become a dependable superstar. I could see building around him and a guard, Donovan Mitchell for instance.

If I'm Darwin Ham I'll put my 2 week notice in he's wasting his coaching abilities trying to please these egotistical bums!

@AK "good" becomes "perfect" w LBJ 👑🏆🏆🏆🏆 at the small forward, and Rui at the power forward... it helps AD 💜💛😈💛💜 on the glass now - PLAYOFF Bron defends. Gotta fire Ham quickly, he lacks offensive creativty. Doc (head) & Rondo (assistant) or LBJ declines his deal and goes to the Clippers to reunite with Tye Lue. The coach he asked for. Can you imagine... 🤣🤪😆
