How to go from Direct Speech to REPORTED SPEECH (aka INDIRECT SPEECH) in 3 Steps -
Find this video's companion resources at www.insightstoEnglish.com, including printouts, presentation materials, and further tips and tricks.
How to teach REPORTED SPEECH (just for declarative sentences):
There are three steps to change direct speech (or quote) into reported speech (or indirect speech):
1. Remove the quotation marks and the comma, and add the word 'THAT'.
2. BACKSHIFT the verb(s). This means make the verb more past. See our backshifting video for details: • What is Backshifting?
3. Change the POINT-OF-VIEW words, such as personal pronouns, possessive determiners, demonstrative pronouns, demonstrative determiners, adverbs of time, and a couple adverbs of place.

I have a question, if you have to change it from past to even more past in the sentences like: Tamera said, " Marcus is tall" Wich sentence in reported speech is correct and why?: Tamera had said that Marcus was tall or Tamera said that Marcus was tall.

All this is so natural to us native speakers. But I haven't seen anything so valuable for people learning English from another language. You should write a textbook.

That's really useful but wouldn't you change coming to going too?
@InsightstoEnglish
@InsightstoEnglish 4 года назад
That's a good point! You could do that, and again it depends on the context. Here, it was a little ambiguous, and we chose to stick with 'coming' since from Tamera's perspective the people would be going toward her. But another person may choose to switch to 'going' for this example, and that would still be correct!

Great video. But is one supposed to view this point of view as a storyteller, a reporter, or both? Because, even thought academically I get you, I feel like this wouldn't be quite "reported" as such.
@InsightstoEnglish

'Reported Speech' is term that is widely used for the grammatical construct. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's used for reports, or that only reporters use it. It's used more broadly for re-telling speech that has already happened (so yes, storytellers often use Reported Speech as well).
