"Where does he work?" - direct "She asked where he works or where he worked". - reported. Which is correct? What about the tense backshifting?

Good question! When the situation is STILL TRUE, the backshift is optional. Personally I would not backshift there.

He/she asked me what the duration of my internship had been. Or (more casually): He/she asked me how long my internship had lasted.
