Reported speech - Test English Grammar Test

We often retell what another person said and we use Reported speech for that. Reported speech can be direct speech or indirect speech.
In indirect speech we may need to change the tense than the tense originally used.

I think the question number 4 and 7 are wrong, because it would be: he said that he was going to visit Ireland.. He said that he had called Robert yesterday.
@lingportal
@lingportal 2 года назад
Dear Ester Abreva, Thank you very much for your comment. Let's look in the cambridge.dictionary grammar: We can use the reporting verb in the present simple in indirect speech if the original words are still true or relevant at the time of reporting, or if the report is of something someone often says or repeats: Sheila SAYS they’RE closing the motorway tomorrow for repairs. Henry TELLS me he’S thinking of getting married next year. cambridge.dictionary grammar ("says, tells, 're, 'is" are pointed by me) The question 4 - present He SAYS that he ___ going to visit Ireland. Question 7 - the same (present): He SAYS that he___ Robert yesterday

i mean yeah but if him visiting Ireland hasn’t happened yet it would make sense to say “he says he is going to visit Ireland” because he is GOING TO do it. It WILL happen in the future

It always depends on when we use the reported speech. Number 4. should be : He said he was going to visit Ireland. Unless we use the reported speech right away (at the moment), in that case we would use that example. Capici??☺☺

First of all, |I'd like to congratulate you guys from the Lingportal for your great effort to help us improve our English. It happens that I'm a little bit confused about question 8 when you didn't change "last week" to "previous or before", because we don't know how much time has passed after the original statement. Thanks in advance. Greetings from Brazil!

Dear nelson, thank you very much! 😀 Question 8, According to cambridge.dictionary: " We often (not always) change demonstratives (this, that) and adverbs of time and place (now, here, today, etc.) because indirect speech happens at a later time than the original speech, and perhaps in a different place. Yes, you're completely right: we don't know how much time has passed after the original statement. This example just shows that changing 'last week' to ''previous week' isn't a strict rule. To be perfectly clear, in indirect speech, you would change "last week" to "the previous week" when you are talking about a previous week, not the most recent "last week." I wish you all the best.

Number 1 is incorrect. Because the original speaker uses the future tense 'will be', so, the reported speech must stay in that tense also. She said that the her children will be playing in the yard.
@lingportal
@lingportal 9 месяцев назад
Dear Michael Naylor-Hodgkinson, Thank you. 😀 Let's look it up in the cambridge.dictionary: "‘Backshift’ refers to the changes we make to the original verbs in indirect speech because time has passed between the moment of speaking and the time of the report." Compare: He said, ‘Jane will be late.’ - He said that Jane would be late. In these example the future (will) has become the future-in-the-past (would). The tenses have ‘shifted’ or ‘moved back’ in time.

Thank you very much for your comment! It's nice to meet so attentive and intelligent student. Question 7 "He says that he called Robert yesterday.' We can use the reporting verb in the present simple in indirect speech if the original words are still true or relevant at the time of reporting. dictionary.cambridge.org Question 8 "She said that she had bought that book last week'. We OFTEN change demonstratives (this, that) and adverbs of time and place (now, here, today, etc.) - dictionary.cambridge.org But not always! We do not need to make any changes to the time expression 'last week' becuse we're reporting around the same time. You might also check examples at 'A self-study reference and practice book for intermedite students' Raymond Murphy, unit 47, ex. 47.1
@lingportal
@lingportal Год назад
To be perfectly clear, in indirect speech you would change "last week" to "the previous week" when you are talking about a previous week, not the most recent "last week." We often (NOT always) change demonstratives (this, that) and adverbs of time and place (now, here, today, etc.) because indirect speech happens at a later time than the original speech, and perhaps in a different place. cambridge.dictionary

@lingportal
@lingportal Год назад
Someone's statement isn't "a universal truth'. 😀 The action 'speak English' happens at the same time with the statement, so we use past tenses to report that statement: 'She said' = simple action in the past, and ' she spoke' English = simple action in the past at the same time with the first action. 😀
