Reporters At War: Dying To Tell A Story (EMMY AWARD WINNING)
Reporters At War is a three-part series that takes a long hard look at one of the most dramatic and dangerous careers of modern times, that of the war correspondent.
More than 300 journalists have been killed in battle zones in the last dozen years, some 200 of these having been deliberately targeted by their killers.
The War in Iraq’s rate of attrition is the highest ever. Though 63 died in the Vietnam between 1963-1975, it’s been estimated that at the above rate around 4,500 journalists would die if the Iraq conflict lasted as long as the Vietnam War. Then there’s the psychological trauma of witnessing the brutality of war close-up, constantly, day in, day out, over long agonising periods of time. No wonder nervous breakdowns, marital break-ups, alcoholism, etc affect war correspondents to a degree unexperienced by most ordinary folk.
Reporters At War also examines the ever-changing circumstances that the war correspondent must file their stories under and the evolving technology that is supposed to make their job easier…that, at least, is the theory. It also looks at some early examples of how technology aided and abetted the faking of war newsreel footage, the impact that television may have had on the outcome of war and the pressure that reporters now find themselves under in the satellite-driven, 24-hour rolling-news era that they now unwittingly find themselves starring in.

I'm sorry for what your people experienced at the hands of my country (US) and many others. However, Vietnam has repaired itself beautifully and the people really work hard to make their country a better place after so much pain. I've met so many kind, lovely Vietnamese people.

Whenever this subject crops up, the first person I think of is the late Neil Davis, an Australian 'video journalist' who travelled with the VC during Vietnam and captured some of the most iconic footage of that war. Also Hitchens.

The story at 45:00 from Jon Steele is stunning and absolutely terrifying. That schoolteacher that saved them is an angel. I desperately hope that he wasn't killed, but it's very possible that he was. And Steele's experience in Sarajevo was absolutely devastating.. how his traumatic experience led him to go to Sniper Alley and wish for a bullet from a Serb sniper to kill him. It was brave of him to share his stories and the shame that he felt from his experiences. I hope he is well now and at peace.

War is the absolute worst humanity has to offer. Those who call for endless war and death have no clue what it is those who fight the wars and those who report on them experience. The sounds, smells, images and memories never leave you. The death of innocence haunt you until your last breath. Anyone who says any differently is either being truly dishonest with themselves or are heartless, soulless and godless.

They is 2 sides to every story and war so even when they go to a war zone they usually go along with whatever agenda they have so it depends on what side your on. For example if you look at the Falklands British media told the story from their side and the Argentina media told their side to fit their agenda and so on. If me and you were to go to Syria and film i bet we would have 2 different sides to it.

It's really interesting that some of the male reporters described their experiences as exciting, fun, interesting, "besides the horror", and the reporter woman that covered Vietnam war described it as "ice melted in water" as something that made no positive impact whatsoever... Also she mentioned male covered more of the battles and bombs, and stuff like that, and she was more interested in the vietnamese people perspective and impact of the war... Two very different ways to experience similar situations...

Without a doubt, this is the best doc on the topic that I've ever watched.... the horror.... the horror... the horror... It is also interesting that in the entire time of World War two, we lost sixty-three journalists. In Gaza since October, almost eighty journalists have been killed... To the man who looked into the camera lens and realized that little girl saw herself... please be at peace with what you did. You are not at fault. The first image of war I saw was in I think the Bosnian war where a camera shows a guy crawling on the ground then pans down and the guy had his legs blown off. I'll never forget the look on the man's face because to me as quite a young kid I thought he looked calm but it was obviously shock. He wasn't screaming or even wincing in pain, just quite blank faced. I haven't finished watching yet so I wonder if that video will be in this documentary.

Because we have been brianwashed by the governments to believe that this honorable and right. But, how can it be? And so, if you trust in the Bible, this is what it says regarding the sacrifices the nations (countries) US included. This is taken from 1 Corinthians 10:20 and reads as follows: "20 No; but I say that what the nations sacrifice, (your sons and daughters) they sacrifice to demons and not to God;+ and I do not want you to become sharers with the demons.+" So, there you have it, in a nutshell, clear as day, your sons and daughters are being, in truth, sacrificed from war to demons. Yes, satan has to have his blood sacrifices!

It’s unfortunate that we don’t have journalists from the old school. Today’s journalists report their opinions rather than facts. The one journalist gets it right when he says he tried to get the journalists to work together. Today, they’re all reporting based solely off the political bias of their station. I have a ton of respect for any journalists who go out with members of the military into battle zones. War is ugly. I wish humans were able to get along no matter how different our ideas/creed/skin color/cultures/etc… we don’t need to agree on everything, yet at least we can respect one another enough that we’re able to sympathize and empathize with one another. When we can do that how much closer will we be to peace & unity? Only problem is we can’t even do that in our own country. Americans are as divided as countries at war… how sad and pathetic is that?

I'm with you Vaneesa. Humanity can do better than this. Unfortunately we don't run the show & the people that do are greedy, power hungry swine with no souls. Have a listen to a song called Generation Z by the band NOFX. That pretty well sums it up. I heard a quote a while back that said - You can go into a pitch black room full of evil, full of darkness, light a little candle & instantly that darkness flees. But you can't do the opposite (from the documentary Wake Up Call). Every positive thing you do as an individual, no matter how small has an impact. These fuckers at the top know this & continue to keep us down to divide, control & dominate us all while the bulk of humanity doesn't realise that individually & collectively we carry the infinite consciousness that can take us to whole new dimensions. Be as informed as you can, learn the systems of corporate control, withdraw consent through non-compliance & we will conquer these fuckheads without having to spill a drop of blood. The one thing they understand is a decrease in profits. They will not fight & fund their own wars. Self sustainability is the key to freedom. Technology is on our side. Smart resourceful people are what makes positive change. Not elite parasites in suits. That's my philosophy anyway. Viva La Revolucion.

One of my friends said to me a few years ago- If they won't create the reality I want, I'll create for myself. I've been running that philosophy ever since. It's a slow old process as I am not wealthy, but I'm just doing it little by little & being patient. I just feel sorry for the people who don't get a chance because of them being trapped in a bad situation, struggling just to survive. Communities have to start looking after themselves & each other on a localised basis (as best as possible). It's easy to take things for granted as our whole society has been set up for economic slavery, convenience & not individual freedoms, which requires a different outlook & actions. In the end I think it's up to people to make physical change themselves. Crying to corrupt governments isn't going to change anything as they are in many corporate pockets & don't really care about us unless they can profit off something. If you don't already know about it, check out a system of gardening called aquaponics. All the Best to you Vaneesa. I hope things go well for you in the future. The human spirit lives in us all. Collectively we can overcome the bullshit & make a better world for everyone. Peace.

Welcome to life. If you compared the first 18 years of this century to the first 18 years of the last, the pile of bodies would be pretty high already for 1900-1918.

I completely totally 100% agree with the statements made in this Doc that a free and unfettered media is essential to the health and survival of any democracy. I agree too with them that if a democracies armed forces target and attack these journalists out there doing their job of reporting, perhaps most importantly when they might bring to light information, stories, facts, or situations that the democratic country imvolved might not like, might be very uncomfortable about the general public learning, and especially would greatly oppose whatever it might be being exposed...these are the exact things that must be reported that the citizens of a democracy absolutely MUST know in order to fufill their solemn duties as a citizen of a democracy..let those who represent them know how they want things done, what actions should be taken, agree or disagree with something, if changes minor or great need consideration, ect... It does no good if the only things ever heard were simply tooting your own horn, if the real or potential problems are hidden there is zero hopeof future improvement. If our nationacts dishonorably it needs to be promptly admitted and addressed and ensure it doesnt repeat whatever course that might take. Thats what a great nation does knowing that all nations will make mistakes some huge its how you handle them in the end when they are revealed that makes all the difference. And yes if the nations armed forces or even government is indeed targeting journalists it finds a problem then that ABSOLUTLY is an OVERT attack on democracy itself--no matter the country of origin the journalists might be from. But you professional journalists out there who said here a free media is cruicial to a democracy and attack against the media an attack against democracy... I dont know if it was an honest slip of your memory or what but in the hope that is all it was Ill be happy to help with the little biys thatdidnt seem to be imcluded here today... You forgot the part about that exact same media thats so crucial to demcracies survial being An Unbiased Professional Media. I think those areprehaps THE MOSTIMPORTANT PARTS. After all what good would it be to have a protected and free media if all that media did was lie, create completely fictional stories based--as all the best lies are--on bits of truth at their cores?? It would then almost seem for it to make sense for a government or whoever the stories are created to harm, for them to strike out in defense. I did say almost, ot is most definatly wrong bit it doescome closerto being understandable if still reprehensible. By yourown definitions here if journalists are biased unethical and unprofessional then THEIR REPORTING becomes an attack on democracy no matter what the story mmight be, who it harms or who it helps. A free honest unbiased professional and protected media is cruicial for the survival of ANY DEMOCRACY. So that means when the American mainstream media was proven to be directly involved with and culpable in createing masses ofstories over a long period of time fitst to prevent someones election as president and then when they were elected conspired to, and worked hard reporting many different stories created to result in the same politicians impeachment and imprisonment, in any other country this would be termed a failed bloodless coup. The media created the false fictional stories and even the FBI haveing been involved. This same mainstream media fully admitted their bias not long ago as well as admitting to reporting false stories they knew full well were false--justifying it be saying retractions were prinyed, or course burried in fine print in the areas and sections they lnow full well are hardly ever seen much less read by anyone. Howcan anyone anywhere possibly ever trust American mainstream media from this point forward. The only one who do currently are those who agree with the bias agtee with whats said and why. Mostly those of the millinneal generations who actually choose to be ignorant and are also truely ignorant and stupid, at least to the point theyhave no clue that agree with thebias ornot that the actions and choices these american mainstream journalists are choosing to take are in fact dooming The United States of America as no other enemy possibly could and if not reversed back to only a decade pr two earlier when the height of professional journalism was their unbiased reporting. What joirnalists cant seem to understand is THAT was why jpurnalists were so widely respected the world over and THAT respect was what protected themmorethan anything else possibly could. Because everybody everywhere, no matter whose side they were on what country or faction or political view they knew that the reporter over there getting the story was unbiased and thereforefair and that the truth of their stories would get outtheir for the world to see just as much as the big power they were fighting against. Today though it just depends on what slant or bias they would put on it today and even though the big power might be completely ing the wrong the bias ensures their voice will never beheard or worse the people reporting might just spout the big powers propoganda or create their own lies to make the stories more believeable popular or easier to sell. Before people could make up their own minds after hearing the facts or words from both sides where now the journalists attempt to make up their minds for their viewers and the stories are simply to sell the journalists views and beliefs so eitherone side or the others getting badly screwed.of course its the American people and America who loose the most by far. This small handfull of american mainstream media that have decided they know better than the entire world, that their thoughts and opinions far superior so they go about ensureing we dont have any real option but believe as they do.they rigg the game, How itterly reprehensible! I would be humiliated to admit to anyone if I was a journalist today and I truely mean that. What then by your own words do we do when ot turns out the biggest enemy of our Democracy turns out to be this media weve been protecting? What then? Obviously their industry cannot or isnt willing to police or correct itself. . The only option I can see is that we the people can refuse to ever trust or recieve our news from american mainstream media sources.only get our news from offshore trusted news sources proven to beor at least still striveing to be unbiased reporters. There are some french sources and as much as this pains me even Al Jeezera is farmore trustworthy..which speaks volumes. Thank God for the net!! At least they cant completely muzzle truth yet anyway. But i hope anyjournalist that might read this will atleasthavethehonestlyto admit this and then go out and try to change your terrible industry here in America if nothing else letting peers know how America views you if ypure still greatly lying to yourselves and thinking your respected trusted or even listened to by the overwhelming majority of us. Only the imbecile moron Millinneal Generations are stupid enough to still be listening but as they dont have the capacity to respect even themselves then even those millinneals have no respect for you at all. What a huge fall from the position journalism and journalists used to occupy only a very short time ago and youve managed to fall so hard so fast ots already very clear the media will never earn that kind of reguard and respect ever again. All of American Mainstream Media being less than National Enquirer status so quickly, at least the Enquirer never made any bones about what they weredidnt try to pass themselves as something they were not as journalists today tried to do. What a very very sad day. All the sacrifice represented here in this Doc rendered into meaningless joke.
