On a warm fall day in Davie Florida, I found something that I have never seen before; a tagged monarch butterfly. These monarch tagging programs exist to track the migration of the monarch butterfly. In Florida, we have some breeding individuals and we have some that simply pass through. Join us as we catch, record and release a tagged monarch butterfly for scientific research.

Nice. The monarch’s should be just starting their migrations north. I wonder if that one just woke up from overwintering.

Not sure. They are trying to study the Florida Monarch population to see what they do. They seem to have their own thing going on down here

There is no evidence that monarchs migrate North out of peninsular Florida. They migrate South into the state. Some researchers think they continue to Cuba. Some people think that the monarchs leave Cuba and fly to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico heading to the Mexican mountains. So far the research is still unfinished. If the monarchs did get to the Mexican mountains, they would migrate North to Texas. On the other hand they probably lay their eggs in South Florida and then dead. The offspring become resident monarchs.

Monarchs in Florida have not been documented migrating North in the Spring like we know the monarchs overwintering in the mountains of Mexico. So, this specimen that David Fine found is extremely important to study. Hopefully other people will see this tagged specimen and report the location(s).

David, did you find out who tagged the Monarch? Mike Rich is interested in knowing, if you did.

Unfortunately no - I submitted the request for the data on the web site but I haven’t heard back

@@keysmoths5336: I haven't figured out the tag, either. Slotten got a male Cecropia moth at his light in Gainesville, FL last night.
