In this video I unbox a new bonsai pot, in my first and probably only ever unboxing video!
I completely repot an Olea oleaster from its original bonsai pot to a new pot that I chose specially for this wild olive tree.

I cried while watching this. It's my dog's 7th birthday yesterday, sadly he passed away a few years ago. Somewhere over the rainbow by Israel is one of my songs for him and it makes me cry everytime I hear it. Coincidentally I watched this midnight after his birthday. It's like he's telling me he's still here watching over and is encouraging me to finally start my own bonsai just like how I took care of him. So all I really want to say is thank you for your calming and beautiful video.

Sorry to hear about your dog 😕 Growing bonsai is a bit like having pets, but of course not in the same way. Bonsai gives you a slow and calm happiness that steadily grows over years. I really hope you feel inspired to get into bonsai. 🌳👍🏻

Thanks mate! That tree will appear again in my next video which I'm editing today.. potting up a branch cutting. Yeah the music's great, but pity is because it's commercial copyrighted, the record companies put their little ads in my video! Since then I've decided to put copyright-free tracks... thanks again!

Olives are pretty resilient. They can take a real battering. So don't be scared... but at the same time, don't rush into anything! One of the things I love about bonsai is: if you don't have time to do something on a tree this year, it can always wait until next year! (With the obvious exception of watering 😂)

Can you please provide an update on this tree? I need to repot an olive, but have heard differing opinions on which season is best (summer vs spring). My climate is similar to yours.
@BlueSkyBonsai
@BlueSkyBonsai 3 года назад
This oleaster tree is doing great. I might do another video on it this autumn. They are very resilient, but I wouldn't repot it now until next spring. In a cooler climate you could repot it in summer but I wouldn't risk it here later than mid-June in this hot climate. If you think your olive is in urgent need of repotting (eg. suffering from potbound) then you could slip-pot into a bigger pot now without root pruning, then do a proper repotting next spring. (Trees almost never die from *not* repotting! But the reverse is very frustrating, when you do a beautiful repot and then the tree dies slowly in the following week or two 🥵)

Oh, one of my oaks had managed to get a really FAT root that kinda circled around the whole pot. XD Natually, I cut it off. I worried a bit about the health of the tree, since I did that last week, and it had plenty of big leaves already. (Yes, I was a bit late). But it seems fine, and new leaves are already growing out. It just paused for a few days. XD I've also viciously cut down my apple trees, because they got mildew again. They are still alive though, and it hasn't spread to any of the others. Maybe I can stave it off this year.
@BlueSkyBonsai
@BlueSkyBonsai Год назад
Great work! Sometimes the big leaves survive just fine when yoy chop the tap root; other times they can throw a tantrum and drop some leaves. Mildew is not a life threatening fungus, thankfully... but it can be annoying for sure. Usually you can get rid of it with a plant-friendly antifungal spray, if it does come back.

Just got an olive bonsai, I see some super tiny bugs in the soil which is making we worried. The soil the tree came with is organic black soil. Thinking about repotting and only using the same soil you’ve used. Do you think this can help with the bugs. If I were to change the soil how often does one need to repot if I use the same soil as you?
@BlueSkyBonsai
@BlueSkyBonsai 4 месяца назад
Tiny bugs in the soil are not necessarily bad, but it's probably a good idea to get rid of them by repotting now in Spring. It's worth repotting into akadama/pumice mix for much better drainage, because the organic black soil probably isn't delivering enough oxygen to the roots. I repot my olive trees once every three years. The akadama/pumice mix lasts ok here. BUT if you have deep freezes in winter then use more pumice in the mix, or add some small granules of lava rock to hold the soil structure, because akadama breaks down after a few freeze/thaw cycles. Have you seen my How to Repot Bonsai series? Might be a good idea to watch a few of these: ru-vid.com/group/PLYoSjHfqA6g9ZgprhIm4Q9suFTUa_aHCW&si=DuIuUZr82BmgkZvI Hope that helps.

@BlueSkyBonsai
@BlueSkyBonsai 3 года назад
Thanks for watching, and great question! What species of tree is it? If it's not a deciduous tree, in a tropical climate you can prune a tree any time of year, but make sure it's not the same time you repot and prune the roots.

@@footbollpro i also have a lot of pre-bonsai material and am selling at a good price. Are you interested in buying cuttings or pre-bonsai of: Japanese maple, Japanese elm (zelkova), japanese boxwood, pyrenean oaks, wild olives, pyracantha, ficus (indoor), sageretia (indoor)? I can send to EU countries including Sweden (I'm in Spain), but I don't know the Swedish rules for you to import plant materials. You'd need to be clear about that before ordering plant material from other countries.

Glad you like the video and tree! Noted, you didn't like the music! The song is a famous cover version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole from 1990. Millions of people love that song, take a look at how many views it got: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V1bFr2SWP1I.html but of course music is personal and there is no accounting for taste. Also, nowadays I do not add any commercially copyrighted songs on my videos. What music would you put on your bonsai video if you did one?
