Repotting Amaryllis for Spring Blooming

I've been growing Amaryllis since 2008.
I bought 5 bulbs after Christmas, on sale.
I potted them up and they bloomed beautifully. I cut off the flower stalk and planted them in the Garden. They bloom every year and multiply. I do cut them back in the fall when the leaves get too long and fall over. But mostly, they seem to thrive in our heat and soil. I like to pot up 10-12 for display on the front porch.

I keep coming back to check your Amaryllis videos to make sure I'm doing the right thing, Peggy. My Amaryllis are sending out their tongues now, so I think I'm going to pot them at the end of November. Not sure why they are earlier than yours!! ~ Sandra

I started with a few marked down Amaryllis from Home Depot after the holidays one year. Now I have over 100 plants. I keep them in a heated greenhouse in the winter and put them out in their pots around May. They grow like crazy here in Maryland. I repot them in late summer, trim down the leaves and then bring them back into the greenhouse around late October. By December, I have full blooms inside again. I am thinking about giving some to local assisted living homes that have greenhouses. Some in my area are now buying marked down herbs and plants for seniors to grow over the winter. If you have plants that are reproducing rapidly, and you don't have space for them, please consider donating them to assisted living homes. Improves the mental health of these folks. Also, do the same thing with poinsettias. My neighbors put them out for the trash, I snatch them up and grow them like trees. Some are now 4/5 years old. They bloom every year for me. Thanks for sharing! I like your relaxed and informal tone.

Oh Denise, Your generosity warms my heart ❤️ I will certainly look into it. Florida is certainly full of retirees and assisted living facilities. I'm 73 and have been Gardening since I was 21. I don't have a greenhouse here in Central Florida, zone 9b. I don't need one. It would be nice to have a shaded one in the summer. Thanks for reaching out. I hope you'll check out some of my other videos. Today I just uploaded my 52 video on my 1,000 pound recycling challenge 👍 Giving back has always been on my list👍♻️👍

Great deal on the Amaryllises! You did a great job cleaning up the roots! Some would be scared to trim as you did! Great video Peggy!

Hi Garry, When you buy bulbs they have no roots because they were cut off completely. I'm giving them a good trim only. Cutting back any leaves means the bulb is going to concentrate on developing a bloom stalk and flowers only. Thanks for watching 🌿💓🌿

We just moved to Windermere and a new mall was supposed to open in August. Target was one of the anchor stores. They had a big garden center at the time. There was a problem with the opening date and they couldn't open until November! They had so much merchandise they were practically giving things away. 90 cents each and I still have the 5 ceramic pots. I'll be sure to take pictures of the blooms. They really are breathtaking. Thanks AJ for watching.

Good morning 👩‍🌾, Have you ever bought a bulb? No roots, at all and nothing peeking out. The growers allow the bulbs to dry out and take off everything before they are packaged up for sale. I'm surprised you don't have them. They are beautiful in bloom

@@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920 We planted some tulip bulbs when we lived in North Dakota years ago, but we never dug them back up so I guess I never thought about how the next years bulb formed…they just kept coming back! We do have an Easter lily now, but it too keeps coming back as well.

Peggy, why is it helpful to trim all the roots off when you transplant it? Or why even transplant it? Could it have stayed where it was in a pot and bloomed? Is it just to look cleaned up? OR will trimming the roots help make it flower? This year was my first to get an amaryllis to rebloom- one so far but I have three more coming soon I think. Thank you!
@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920
@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920 2 года назад
Hi Marcy, Did you notice how Rootbound it is? If it had to try and bloom again in the pot I don't think I would get the big beautiful multi-blooms. I could leave them in the ground because the roots have room to spread. Plus I can add extras to the worn out soil. Good question 💓

@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920
The plants seem to need a rest by the end of the year. I have plants that are in the ground all year and the greens begin to brown naturally and I cut them back. As soon as the weather warms up in March they bloom again. If you have Amaryllis that you pot and treat like a house plant and have success I would love to hear! I've been cutting them back for 15 years (zone 9b, Florida)and it works for me. Let me know if you have success in other ways 💓

Ms Peggy, thanks for sharing this information! I’m in Sunnyside, FL, zone 9A. I have put amaryllis in the ground in the past but didn’t know if they should be dug up at some point and stored somehow. Can you advise, please? I love Laura and Aaron on Garden Answer and never miss a video! But I am excited to have help from someone in my planting zone! Thanks! ~Cassandra Senter
@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920
@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920 2 года назад
Hi Cassandra, Welcome aboard 👩‍🌾👍 I dug up the Amaryllis every few years. The ones in the pot are pulled out each year. My reason is because the pot soil gets depleted and the roots are so overgrown. In the ground they can spread out. In the ground they multiply and need to be taken up, divided and replanted with room around them. I do cut back the roots and also give the tops a clean cut. I hope this helps you 👩‍🌾💓👍
