Repotting and Care of Zygopetalum Orchid 

I have been growing these for about 2 years. I let mine get crispy dry I neglect them and they LOVE IT. Lots of light water but let dry. I think the biggest part is Temp. They like 60-70s on average. In the summer I keep mine outside where temps are in the 50s/60s at night and during the day 70-80s. They do not like over 80F.

Your zygos roots look really good! 3 times as much as what mine had :) good point with the air pokets though, I'll stop stressing about them cos I noticed it doesn't really matter :) can't wait to see them bloom!

I was surprised u cut off the damaged leaves, when they were still functional, plus u didn't seal the cuts to prevent any organisms infecting your plant. Also, did u resterilise the shears before cutting off the root on the 2nd plant? I'm no expert myself but I've gotten better since losing a few plants.

That's some great roots. The plants looks so strong you should have some beautiful flowers. Great job.

these roots were far better than i ever expected :)

we just make the soil out of bark here, and i always wondered how someone could stuff all that pieces of bark between the roots. that's why i was very intrested into this video ! I guess i am just a little bit to carefull when it comes to roots. Good decision that u choose another pot - when you are even at changing the soil !

How is your zygo doing? Mine went downhill, looks like it is trying to come back after I repotted it.

sure can! it will likely take a few weeks though... i have been very busy at work lately working long hours. but i will do on soon :) I'm waiting for my butterfly orchid bud to open as well :)

zygos are onsidium allaiance and potting was excellent . I happen to be one matured plant but unfortunately due to lack of kniwledge i potted with only coco dust and the pit remaibed soggy all the time . After 7 months when i saw you and i un pot . But shicjed to see the root system us fulky danaged ! Now i out the plant over moist spagnam moss and hooe there shall be new root and in 2/3 months it can be back to your stage and i can pot it up , I think i like to know can i water my pot media at night ??

Just a tip , water the plant before repotting then the roots getting more flexible ;) .

It's good to be careful with the roots. however most plants are tough and regrow new roots easily if damage occurs. I used to be very careful with my plants but learned over time that i usually get the same results either way.. however i do my best to not harm them :)

Get a piece of driftwood from an aquarium and just attach the roots to it. But first soak the driftwood overnight in a bucket of water before attaching the roots of orchids to it. I wish I can load my photos of my terranium right now, but all of those photos are stored away. One day I may show them in a video. ; )

Very strong and thick roots! Wow... I'd get a nice piece of tree bark and hang them around it. Sure looks good in a terranium. ; )

lol... i'm sure it will be fine :) as long as you loosely jammed it rather than the jammed like concrete..lol I'm not sure how many orchids i have now... i'm thinking LOTS lol i will be doing a video update on them all so i will surely count them at that time :)

how many orchids do you have now? when I re-potted mine I turned it over and stuffed mix up in the middle, would that have been to much?

I recently got two zygos as well and they both have black spots all over the old and new leaves, any ideas what is wrong with them?

Oh, I long for another Zygo. Had one a few years ago, but it was already sick with root rot and I couldn't save it. Haven't seen one in a store here. :(

Their roots are so incredibly fragile.. I was grinning when he plucked the moss out, knowing the results I had.

: ) Those are 35mm pictures...they're not digital. I'd have to get them out of the photo albums and scan and resize them. That's too much work. : D

You really could save a big amount of money if you'd use perlite insted of those terracotta-bowls, but i guess u know that ;)
