Now that the flowering season is over for the schlumbergeras it's time to repot! Repotting schlumbergeras is actually pretty simple. Well-drained soil with some organics in it and you should be good to go. I said in the video that a cactus mix is fine, I should have clarified that I meant a cactus mix with soil and not one of the mixes that is all gravel. I cannot wait for these to grow and bloom this year! Especially the variegated holiday cactus! Everything I did in this video applies to repotting holiday cactus, repotting easter cactus, repotting christmas cactus and repotting the thanksgiving cactus, which is the same as the holiday cactus. When is the right time to repot schlumbergeras? I like to wait to several weeks after they've bloomed and when the day lengths are starting to pick up. For me that is anywhere from late winter/early spring to early summer.

I just recently repotted a Christmas cactus my granddaughter gave me for Christmas year before last in a self watering container, it seems to be happy. ❄️💚🙃 It was a very small plant and it kept drying out soooo fast I think it appreciates having water available when it wants a drink. It did put out a small new leaf for me after I repotted it. ❄️💚🙃

Gotta love those self-watering pots! I think those are a great idea, especially in a dry climate.

It's the end of July and I just repotted 4 Thanksgiving cactus (3 into 6 inch pots, 1 into an 8 inch pot). Here in Pennsylvania they just finished a late mini bloom. Tons of new leaves now. Repotted for the first time in 60% cactus mix and 40% perlite. Hope I did okay. Praying.. and I also have 24 rooted, planted cuttings off these plants. All of them rooted firmly in 2 inch pots. What am I getting myself into! LoL. Thanks for your informative video.

I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen a variegated holiday cactus.❄️💚🙃

Can't hardly wait for the variegated cactus to grow out, wow! I have a Thanksgiving cactus that was a family members, it's ? old, but old. She was living in an empty house with minimal care for several years until the plants were 'released to me'. (sentimental family members). She had dried white flowers around her, so I assumed she was a white cactus. Nope, red!!! Anyway, she's doing fine and when she blooms I take nice pictures and send to the sentimental people...

That's so sweet! They are plants that would have lots of stories to tell if they could speak. Very long lived.

I have both the Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus (schlumbergera) and I also have Easter cactus (rhipsalidopsis). My Thanksgiving cactus has been with me for over 40 years and got very big, woody & heavy. 2 years ago I took cuttings and restarted a new plant. Because of space issues I gave away cuttings. The pieces I kept still always bloom for me. My variegated Thanksgiving cactus is growing well but seems to be losing it's variegation. I have it near my only south window (which is frosted). It's not a big window but all my holiday cactus have been there for years & seem to get a plenty of light. They are easy plants for me to grow and I love them.

They are such wonderful plants and its so nice how well they root from cuttings so we always have a piece of them.

Repotted mine all five - after about 7 years- into the next size pot. They all seem happy. three have bloomed twice each year, I used a cactus mix for these. I love your channel.

Thank you Jeff. Stay safe , stay healthy and see you next time! Saw the instagram picture of Pumpkin and she looked rather crabby in that one. I’m telling you she does not like her picture taken. She and I are kindred spirits. ❄️💚🙃

You're putting that $35 scoop to use. 😉 I hardly ever actively fertilize mine and, if I do, they're getting what the orchids get (so very diluted non-urea feed). I tend to just throw some 13-13-13 slow release pellets on them in the spring and call it a day.

@TropicalPlantParty Год назад
Basically what I do. I use a hose end sprayer and dial it down to either 1/2 or ¹/4 when I get to them and the orchids.

Hi Jeff! I really like Holiday cactus. I have a few and they are still in the nursery pots. When it warms up I'll check them to see if they need repotted. I've never seen the variegated ones before. I'll definitely be watching for them this year. Thank you so much for sharing!

My plants are growing like crazy in my family room with the wood stove going. I have to water a lot but the plants are loving the almost tropical conditions in here. I do have trouble keeping the humidity up but they seem to be enjoying the conditions. Shoots it almost gets up to 80 degrees in here, shorts conditions for sure. I’m glad the rest of the house is cooler. ❄️💚🙃

After much procrastination I finally repotted mine. Its an older plant and just wasn't growing & keeping new growth. Bad timing but necessary.

Grandson and granddaughter made it home safe. It made me a little nervous especially since they were leaving here in a snow storm. They got out of Michigan and it was smooth sailing. ❄️💚🙃

My thanksgiving cactus is a piece from my great grandmother. It’s 80+ years old. It’s so dramatic though. When it’s been repotted it goes into shock and takes a good 2 weeks to come back to life. It’s a strange plant as it really doesn’t like the sun at all. Bright but shaded place it likes.
@TropicalPlantParty

That sounds about right for them. Long lived but can be finicky at times under stress.

Doesn't hurt to wait a few weeks after they bloom. If you're able to repot it without disturbing the roots much then you can repot now, bur have to be aware that it might drop its buds.

I tend to repot right away… sometimes hastily and have loved two Chinese fan palms to death

Not a bad idea to repot right away, especially if they're planted in peat mud like some of mine were! Easy to over-love the Chinese fan palms. They're very ungrateful palms.

Thank you this is the information I needed. My Thanksgiving Cactus seems healthy and has been blooming non stop for a couple of months. It is not creating new segments though and the roots are densely matted on top. I worry it's blooming from stress, I put it in a terrible pot with saucer attached last year and only one drainage hole in the base., had to be extra diligent about not overwatering and pouring out excess water when I did. One segment is browning at the base. I am going to repot it soon, should I discard the stem that is browning?
