I'm transplanting my Year old baby Lithops Seedlings (06 July 2020) for the FIRST time into a mineral based substrate for them to continue to grow and establish into a new Potting mix.
I GREW THESE LITHOPS FROM SEEDS COLLECTED OFF ONE OF MY MATURE LITHOPS (they were 'mixed' seed because I found seeds scattered in the soil during a repot),So sowed them and these are the ones in this video that survived and now they are just over 1 year old.
Thank you for watching😁

For those that question potting media.... Test what works for: you, your environment, your "flower", the growth stage, growth requirements, water tolerance, etc. 5hen make diff batches, and test, test, test! I use a handmade self-mixed grit, with 10% organic, (worm poop, cacti soil etc) and testing, holy cow, it drains like my bank acct when I find these Lil things for sale some place 😍🥰❣️. Thanks for the vid, and I use rubber bands across my pots, it's a root saver, and frustration remover ❣️

I've grown lithops a long time. What I find easier to pot them up is to get elastic bands over the pot to make a grid. Pop the little lithops in each square adjusting the bands so they dont fall through. That leaves them dangling into the pot and then you just fill the pot through the spare holes inbetween the bands and no need to try and poke a hole in to put the lithops into cus that just fills back in on itself. It's a game changer.

That sounds great especially if you have a few larger Lithops arranged in one pot... especially if they are bigger than Seedlings, that makes it seem a lot easier. With little fiddly ones I just poke them in the substrate cos they are so small 😁 Thanks for the tip... Thank you for watching and for you great comment. 👌 👍🌵☀️🌵☀️

I've been doing research on lithops for their care. I understand they are different from other succulents so I want to learn as much as I can so I don't accidentally kill them. Killed one as a kid or young teenager.

They’re so tiny, great job potting them up. I’ve never been good with growing these, they just don’t seem to grow well for me. Maybe I’ll try again next year 😊 Thank you for sharing with us, Claire. From Edith & myself, have a wonderful Monday and week ☀️🌵🌼🌺🌸🏜

Thank you, the seeds germinate extremely fast and at a lower temperature than most cactus seed. Lithops are a challenge at times🙆‍♀️ Thank you for watching and for your comment😁👍🌵😎

Yay well done on that repotting. That’s definitely hard to do, I can imagine the struggle. I temember when I repotted mine before, was really hard as I put 12 lithops in one pot. Give us an update to them after few months please. Thank you.

Thanks for watching, these particular Lithops are currently doing well, they seemed to survive that repotting and were fiddly but at least not prickly 😆 I keep them on my window sill indoors (without grow lights) I shall do an update on them soon. 👍😉🌵

after how many months can repotting lithops that have grown and after repotting do not need to be watered. I really like your video
@CactusCove
@CactusCove 2 года назад
Usually if you grow Lithops from seed, it's good to wait about a year before potting young Lithops into new pots. You can give a very tiny amount of water after repotting (only a little spoonful) this will just only help to settle the Lithops and encourage new roots, but you do not have to give any water. If you choose not to give water after repotting, then just wait a while until the weather is dry and clear and less humidity, then you can water as usual. Depending on your climate or location in the world, you need to adapt the watering times. Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment 😊🌵

Can I ask what brand of bird grit is this?
@CactusCove
@CactusCove 3 года назад
I use a bird grit which contains crushed oyster and sea shells with added fine grits. I use one from the pet bird section from pet stores (in the UK I get it from Pets at Home). I also get the equivalent bird grit from WILKO aswell which is a little cheaper and comes in little bags if about 1kg. Thank you for watching 👍🏻🌵😊☀️

@@CactusCove Thanks for explaining it. Interestingly, the Wilko one caught my eye whilst browsing. I have a feeling that a trip there will be imminent. I am new to growing Lithops, so all these videos are immensely helpful. Thanks again 🙏🏻

Thumbs down for me for not explaining what the substrate is made up of
@CactusCove
@CactusCove 2 года назад
Thank you for watching... substrate can be a highly talked about subject, its really your preference when it comes down to what you use, and based on your location in the world - you will have to use a substrate that meets your climate too, but overall, Lophophora are not too fussy as long as its very free draining, as they have large tuberous tap Roots as they mature, that are very rot prone 🙂
@manajorymanajory7751

Your substrate is way.....too big!
@CactusCove
@CactusCove 3 года назад
My Lithops are doing well, and I think size of substrate is one of those subject matters that growers will have divided opinions on, just like what type of substrates to use. Where you are in the world dictates what, or how much, or less of, a substrate you use, or would not use at all. So, I like to use a very well draining mix for Lithops (most components don't exceed 10mm in size as I don't buy substrates above this grade size (except my bark chips and vermiculite, which are more recent changes to my potting Mixes 😆) but to be honest if I was transplanting them now, It would not worry me to add these 2 additions to the substrate for potting on young Lithops at the 1 year old stage. Due to the climate here in the UK, and I think, and this is purely my personal opinion, so do not be offended... Lithops don't really care about the size of substrate as long as it dries out after about 2 or 3 days to avoid ROT issues, and my Iithops are growing well with no issues, still in the same pot as shown in this video, and are in another shedding phase. So whether my Lithops are 1 year old seedlings, or older, they get the same substrate. Only if I'm growing them from seed upto 1 year, is the only time I use a finer grade substrate, and then as shown in this video, they are subsequently moved up into my regular substrate. I did another more recent update video on these Iithops too when they reached the age of about 1.5 years old and they transitioned well from transplanting. Hope this has been of help. Thanks so much for watching 👍🏻😊🌵
