I'm Ricky Johnson, this is a discussion piece on the strange aspects keepers don't often consider when dealing with and incubating reptile eggs, including studies that I hope will surprise you as much as they did me!
Video & image footage is a mix of my own, Francis Cosquieri, Tim Baker, Sam Perrett and amazing content creators on Pexels.com. The rest can be found below in the sources document.

I have wanted to try keeping eggs in contact with each other for a while do to the very reasons you mention. Makes me so happy to know others have had the same thoughts.

And you know, sit with them and talk with them, like I would with birds or crocodilians, but with snakes.

Fantastic and fascinating info. I'm so glad more and more research is coming out that soundly trounces the 'reptile brain' nonsense theory suggesting these guys have no emotions or whatever. We give ourselves way too much credit lol.

@@HerpHQ My favorite part was your mention of the study that used strawberry essence on salt water crocodile eggs and how that affected the clutch’s eating habits. Absolutely fascinating!

not tried to breed anything myself yet, but i have often thought it odd to separate the eggs from one another. things rarely develop for a single purpose so it makes sense to me that eggs staying clumped together is worth more than just avoid rolling. especially when i see some youtube bods mentioning that its good to leave the first hatchling in the tub as the movement will stimulate the others to hatch. logic would say that if they are connected the effect would be magnified. the idea of scent imprinting is fascinating too. could be an easy experiment to do for some hobby breeders. could there be any kind of correlation between laying sites and prey preference? for instance natricines laying in amphibian heavy environments to encourage preference for safe species.

Great notes! Absolutely, I hope some of these notes can infuse some students or academics to test these hypotheses! :)

Honestly, I never would have guessed I'd be so engrossed in a video about eggs, so the sky's the limit as far as my interest. Between this and your wonderful leopard gecko video, I'm hooked. One topic I know I personally would benefit from is an overview of how reptiles interact with various forms of heat and light. There are some terrific dissections on this topic, but what I'm thinking would be more of an higher level overview that helps show where all the puzzle pieces fit, perhaps in a "day of the life of" structure. "When this band of light touches the reptile's body, it triggers XYZ response that wakes it up, and then..." kind of thing.

@@bluefrogcreations6132 Great ideas! I especially like the more specific thoughts on wording/video direction as videos on heating, lighting and their interactions on anatomy and behaviour certainly are already on the list! :) Though I feel to do them justice they will need to be pretty big projects! Hopefully I'll get the time aside to do those!

What a fascinating topic! Between your FB group and these videos and Dillon's podcast, I have really started to look at reptiles in a whole new light. I have always strived to give top level care, but the research into reptile emotions and intelligence has been eye opening.

I do wonder if in species where mothers guard their clutch like ball pythons if taking the eggs away from the mother too early might psychologically screw them up.
