Trent Reznor, Peter Murphy, Atticus Ross, and Jeordie White perform Nine Inch Nails' "Reptile" live in Boston for a special radio broadcast. Presented in 1080p HD.
This is simply AMAZING. It bugs me that people say Peter Murphy is trying to be David Bowie. Have you guys never heard of Bauhaus, the band he was the front man for? The genre is GOTH. This is how he's always sounded, since the 80's. Love him!
Yes but he try to be similar bowie's voice since 80s(bowie was/is a Huge influence for so many singer you can't event count they, in particular in 80s ) , and just to be clear I love bauhaus music and I admire PM.
This is one of those RU-vid gems that you find then have to come back to all the time. Actually, the whole session they did together is pretty addicting.
@@nomnoomz I dunno if I'd say this version is better actually. This version is a bit more melodic and 'sexy' sounding with more vocal flair but the original has a true industrial rawness which this one lacks. Downward Spiral version sounds desperate and evil even.
In '98 Bauhaus played at the amphitheatre around my city. I was fortunate enough to meet Peter Murphy. Oddly, I met him at a Toys'R'Us while he was looking for a xylopone for his kid. Gracious man. Tall and spectacular. His speaking voice is commanding.
Trent Reznor has been a huge fan of Bauhaus for years so I'm sure this was just as much an honor for him as it was for anybody else in that room. I bet it was pretty cool to be able to work with one of his idols.
You mean you’re glad that Trent Reznor got a chance to work with Peter Murphy ! Trent just imitated his style copied him and made more money let’s get the facts straight Peter was first.
@@negativeindustrialit sounds 10x better than the original. I actually listened to this version first and when I finally got to listen to the original I couldn't believe how bad it sounded
@@TimeandMonotony was interesting to see NIN in the early days, I saw them open for a few acts, It was either Minsitry or KMFDM or skinny puppy or something. All these people knew the words to their songs and I had not heard of them yet. Not sure if the album was out yet. Their show wasn't great as it was obvious everyone had drank too much. I think he was still writing and maybe living downward spiral. We were along for the ride. maybe 1988? I cant remember anything.
@@telias972 I'm jealous, even if it wasn't a great show! It must be cool to have seen a band before they went big, that way you can compare how far they came from that time. ☺
It would be amazing if Reznor produced one of Peter Murphy's albums. Basically I want it to be like NIN but with Murphy's amazing vocals (Trent can do backup if he wants).
I absolutely love this song. Have been listening to it for years and years. But, add Peter Murphy to it, who I had never heard of before, and it takes on a whole new magical song that transcends from the other. Beautiful song
10 years of watching this video (since NIN posted it) and I still think Trent and Atticus......err....NIN should come out with an album featuring Peter Murphy as lead vocals.
@@damien136 think about it though, regardless of if you like how it sounds, isn't it unique? He brings that quality to all his songs, and that's an individual mark he's left. Personally I love the sound of his voice 😊
There are no words to really describe this performance. I’m so happy I watched it til the end. This is my new favorite live version now. Blessed be to Trent, an actual rock god.
I love where it switches up near the end and that guitar part was just amazing. I have no words for how great that was. Sometimes you hear a piece of music that it's so good it almost touches your soul.
Did no one catch the lyrics "haunted: when the minutes drag" at the end? Those come from the Love And Rockets' song "Haunted." Love and Rockets were comprised of Murphy's Bauhaus band mates. Very cool and interesting connection.
There was a fly? Oh that’s interesting. I made a picture, well a really great picture happened I caught on my camera. A fly died on the head of a q-tip in a window sill and I said “cliiiick”. I edited the picture and made it really arty. It’s better than arty. It is really good it could win awards or be shown somewhere that is a spectacle in a difficult city to be seen in if someone else wanted it to. But just before this notification of a comment on this video came to my phone I was watching some guy I never saw before Know Better or something. He was talking about 4K res and he said we don’t see split second things no matter the resolution. I didn’t look the whole time watching this so I don’t know why I didn’t see a fly but it must have been while I was reaching around or shifting my legs trying to be less uncomfortable in the bathroom.
I have been a NIN fan since Pretty Hate Machine (I am telling my age here)! What I always loved about Trent is the diversity of musicians he works with. He has always collaborated and I love it! Peter Murphy, Atticus Ross and Jeordie White are all great musicians! They defiantly brought a new more gritty sound to Reptile❤️
Totally agree! I remember using my grass-cutting money to buy that CD! The diversity of his work is what is so impressive. Then, when he pretty much gave away the banjo riff from Ghosts for Old Town Road, I gained a new respect for him as an artist.
I still have my show posters from that show. I was always so surprised that they picked the buckle of the Bible belt for the 6/6/6 show. I don't know about you but the novelty of that has always felt extremely special to me
Peter Murphy gives this song a debauched swagger totally lacking in the original which combined with the much grittier bass tone really makes this version a complete evolution of 'Reptile'...
If this really Iggy Pop commenting on a collaboration between Peter Murphy and Trent Reznor, then the Internet is now complete. We are done here, people. There's nothing else cooler than this.
PM has a quality in his mids & low end that even Bowie didn't have. IDK what it is exactly, but it's there. And just hearing him speak at the end, wow!
He has one of my favorite voices in rock music. His voice is just so full & also fairly versatile and flexible, yet it still always has his characteristic tone. His voice has barely aged a day, too.
Peter knows exactly how far to have the mic to get the best out. such a legend. the bass on this..... any other room in that hotel must be trembling. 😂
How could anyone binge on FI? I mean l can admit l tried but so much of it was weak that it was just not possible. Yet I'm still a fan and have tix to see them again in two weeks in Dallas.
This song is so magical. Nothing like it. I was fortunate enough to have this come up in my recommendeds. At first I was like, "oh, pretty cool". Then 3 months later I still come back to it time and time again. If under-rated had a definition, this would be it. The vibe is unexplainable.
Holy shit! This is great. I love the fact that Trent is just playing bass and jamming. Peter gives this a bit of a different vibe. I would have liked to hear a little more of his signature sound, but this is pretty great.
I never thought I'd hear one of my favorite NIN songs performed so beautifully, simply amazing. An a side note, Peter Murphy's birth date (7/11) is the same as mine. :)
@@eddiecope1 I know it I'm in good company 😊we truly did grow up listening to Trent Reznor and for him to still be doing everything to the utmost highest standard blows my mind 💖
I mean the fact that they have Peter Murphy doing a cover is amazing on its own, but what I love about Trent and NIN is this little sonar bit at 4:14! It's just so subtle and perfect. Goddamn!
i was under the impression this was Trent doing lead...i was dismayed at first...then i realized...this singer does do it justice...and then i saw Trent on the bass, i had to reprimand myself for being an immediately judgmental ass! i stand in humble error!
The lead singer is Peter Murphy (he was the lead singer of Bauhaus, and did amazing solo work as well). Check out his stuff on RU-vid. It's worth the effort. He was an EXTREMELY influential artist that helped create Gothic/Alternative music as we know it today. I'm sure Trent was totally fangirling over this experience (like he did when he had Gary Numan sing Metal with him.) Friggin EPIC!!!
Robert Shannon Holy shit... You don't know who Peter Murphy is?!!! Bauhaus is one of Trent's favorite bands, and one of his influences. Do yourself a favor and go listen to Bauhaus, and Murphy's solo material. So you can hear the birth of goth.
I only discovered this video 2 years ago. I've listened and seen it at least 3 dozen times. It's mesmerizing, haunting, cathartic, beautiful, and euphoric. I've been a Peter Murphy fan since I was 15. A NIN fan since 17. As of 2022, I am 48. Trent Reznor has been fortunate enough to perform with three of his greatest musical heroes and influences: David Bowie, Peter Murphy, and Gary Numan. All four of them are legendary rock gods, whose music I adore.
It's so entertaining to listen to, and watch. On one hand it has the same aggressive predatory character as the original recording of this song, but at the same time feels so different. Instrumentation and Trent's voice scream Year Zero-era, which even today sounds almost futuristic, while Peter's vocals, on the background of that sweet sweet fat fat bass, have some vintage feel to it. It's as if the narrator from TDS has actually survived and lived next 15 years, being way more mature now, but still hurting from that experience.
Can we all agree that we are witnessing Reznor appreciating unselfishly his gift from The other side,I truly believe he's the last one gifted in this way.,there's Beethoven,Bach,Mozart, etc.but it ends musically gifted in such ways with Reznor, and we get to live through it.
