If you voted against money that came into your district for valuable, positive public works, then why should your constituents support your reelection? Your constituents' interests would be better served by a representative who doesn't hinder bills that improve their lives. And certainly not by a rep who is so blatantly party-first to the detriment of her district. We need politicians who can negotiate in good faith, and compromise, instead of hold a party line regardless of a bill's benefits to the populace.

I have to agree. An answer like that would do a lot to diffuse the discomfort and ludicrous nature of the situation for the shameless who find themselves so squarely in the crosshairs. Hell, it might even approach being an honest answer.

This is a horrid, horrid bill for two reasons. First, government pork is never, ever successful at building a competitive industry. Making a sustainable, competitive business vs. getting government funding are two completely unrelated goals, and doing the latter will not magically produce the former. I say that as a person who has worked on projects funded by similar bills. Second, the government is AT THE SAME TIME telling companies in this industry that they can't sell products to China. This is causing an enormous wellspring of local competitors in China. As an example, USA used to have pretty much 100% market share in EDA tools. The big three vendors Synopsys, Cadence, Mentor (now bought by Siemens) were all US companies. But now, US government limits their business in China. So what happens? Exactly what any person with a brain would expect. Chinese companies jump in to fill the void. That 100% market share will be completely destroyed in 10 years. And they've done this to MANY sectors of the semiconductor industry. The way to keep technology leadership is to SELL THINGS and make it impractical for customers to develop similar technology themselves. Politicians aren't from this industry, and don't know this very elementary fact. So they are destroying US leadership in this industry with their bumbling stupidity.

In those cases, companies were asked to create a technology to solve a specific problem. They government was like a customer. Later, those found commercial applications. That kind of program has been comically unsuccessful many, many times.
