The Bottoms is the area of pit housing in Eastwood, known locally as the Breach, and described by DH Lawrence at the start of the novel "Sons and Lovers". The Breach pit housing, known as "model pit housing", were built in the late 1860's when the population of Eastwood was rapidly increasing due to the sinking of three new collieries, namely High Park (1860), Moorgreen (1865) and Brinsley (early 1870's). The local coal-owners around Eastwood were Barber and Walker Co, renamed Carston, Waite and Co in Sons and Lovers.
