I think Rodney becoming a regular (? Hope so) on Game Night is perhaps this best thing to happen all year. Aaron is of course sorely missed and it's nice to see him back every now and again when he's able. But Rodney and his infectious smile are such a great addition.
Rodney has a voice that is so easy to listen to. He teaches games so well, moving logically from rule to rule. And of course his smile makes him so easy to watch. Thanks for having him in your videos from time to time. I hope to see more of him.
Love the addition of Rodney … he has a special talent for explaining gameplay. I also appreciate the careful camera work to show the card powers. This is a great game, but people struggle understanding some of the icons on the cards, and this playthrough made them much clearer. Thanks BGG!
Wow its awesome to watch Rodney teaching the game from scratch to new players. I would watch an entire series like this because you catch key questions and clarifications that come up. Plus you get a sense of how difficult a game truly is to teach. And it serves as a "How to teach" vs "How to play" and thats valuable insight!!
One of my favorite episodes of GameNight this year! Rodney is the greatest at explaining game rules. I finally caved and bought Res Arcana tonight because of you four :)
This was so much fun to watch! My copy of Res Arcana comes tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited to play it. Thank you for creating this wonderful content!
I LURVE engine builders. This one's a must for me. Finally got it to the table, it didn't disappoint. Thanks loads for the playthrough, as the first time we tried to learn it from the rulebook we got totally confused, the playthrough explanation cleared things up. It's very puzzley, anyone who likes puzzles will probably like this one.
Got this game the other day, it's so much fun. Using the draw variant is really good. Whenever I get a new game I'm glad that either these guys or Tabletop have a playthrough as it means I don't have to read the rulebook ;)
That was an amazing gameplay. Even english not being my first language, that was so clear and fun to watch. And Nikki just killed it! Congratulations 🙏🏻🌈
Neat game! I was not too sure about it when I saw the Watch it Played video, but the play through was a game changer. See what I did there? I put it on my wish list.
You won't be disappointed. I picked up this game shortly after it came out and it has already made it into my top 5 favorite games I have ever played. I have never won the game in the same way. Even after 9 games and 8 wins. This is also a nice game for beginners so it is my go to game when playing with new people. While they don't win I have never had someone leave not loving the in depth engine building and resource gathering mechanics of the game. This is because the player cards have every symbol and explanation so it is easy to understand quickly and enjoy playing right away.
Really great play-through! I had watched a few vids from the creator and it looked "meh" and confusing. This had me spellbound to the end, and sold me on it. Going to pick it up right away. That and watch your Gizmos play-through too... Thanks!! Of course having Rodney play with you made it the best of both worlds! Looking forward to more...
Man, I have not been attracted to this game, even though it has been on a LOT of top-ten lists for 2019 games. But this video kinda makes me want to get it! My brain thanks you, but my bank account curses you! :D
Minor goof: @1:08:22 Nikki exhausted the Calm/Elan magic item to take a Fire (Elan). It doesn't actually do that... it only gives you a resource during the Gather phase at the start of the turn.
There's another even more subtle one at 38:33 where Nikki activates Chalice of Fire to unexhaust either her Mage or the Magical Shard to then immediately use it again to get a Calm resource, essentially taking two actions on a single turn.
@@bastwood As far as the goof with the Chalice of Fire goes, they appear to have caught it and removed the discussion during editing... at about 39:06 you can see that the Magical Shard got unexhausted and she went back to three Calm essences. Then she taps the Shard and says "I'm gonna get my water".
Also at 1:00:58, she incorrectly took the Life for the Sacred Grove from her personal resources instead of the supply... and since she ended up using the Elan just to meet the wild requirements for converting to gold, those two mistakes ended up cancelling each other out and she would have ended up in the same place.
Rodney's experience is what my first game of Imperial Settlers was like. I felt like everyone had x2 as many turns as me when the game was over. Hope this isn't normal.
What a great game. It reminds me of Lords of Waterdeep, except there is no board or agents. Not sure why I'm reminded of that particular game, but there we are. I'll have to look into this one more closely. Thank you for the playthrough. :)
You all did really well saying “exhaust” the card. I still say “tap” and use other MTG terms, like Mana and sleeping sickness. Although Nikki did say Mana once..... LOL!! ,
Dont how huge impact it had on the game, but at 47:50 he put a green and red aside, but threw them away later by mistake. Great Video though. Learned the game this way :D
I think Lincoln took another 1 extra red or black @ 40:20 (changed 2 for 4 instead of 3) So I guess it kinda adds up a bit in the end. Rodney could also have saved his gold by throwing a red instead @ 22:35. (He needed the 2 red for the card, but needed 3 essence to use the Alchemy-Card, so he should have traded the red for another red and saved his gold.) Love your videos btw, I could tell you guys really enjoyed this one.
If that's Rodney's copy of Res Arcana, that means I've touched the same 'kyerds' as Rodney and Nikki, Dave & Lincoln! Six degrees of separation type stuff! My brush with greatness. Oh man. Fun game, we bought a copy after playing it at AireCon.
This is the one time I'm thankful America changed the first Harry Potter from Philosopher's to Sorcerer's Stone, or else we might have had an hour or so of Lincoln making Harry Potter jokes.
Old European beliefs attribute great powers to a Hand of Glory combined with a candle made from fat from the corpse of the same malefactor who died on the gallows. The candle so made, lighted, and placed (as if in a candlestick) in the Hand of Glory, would have rendered motionless all persons to whom it was presented.
Hasn't Rodney been working for BGG for a while now? This is very cool though. You ever seen that dice tower game session where Jason humiliated himself and the channel? Rodney was a class act.
@@nickrekietascrosseyedwife7166 just like super girl, the flash, and arrow are all on the same network sometimes they have cross over episodes. I love this kind of stuff! Rodney is a wonderful human being, if you ever have time to meet him or talk to him he is a very kind and thoughtful guy!
I kept being tickled by the use of the word "essences" in this video. I guess I just can't forget that Dr Strangelove scene. "I do not shun women, Mandrake, but I do deny them my essences."
Rodney! 🎉🙃 It‘s great to see the game in play, as others have mentioned, I too was not instantly attracted by the rules but seeing those four having fun makes the game appear much more attractive. Thank you!
I don't understand why niki put life token on groove from her own pool and not from supply. Also Lincoln's turn where he ended with 6 skulls was rly bad choice. He could easily generate water and life with fountain and get a lot of resources from it and then exhange it for gold using stone.
Nikki cannot do what she did, for at least two turns in a row she put green (life) essence on her sacred grove, she cannot do that she can only put one per turn, she was not exhausting her grove when she was using the mermaid to use the VP ability. Strangely she would exhaust it when she used the Celestial Horse though. So the game should have gone on another turn or maybe even 2 more turns!
My one complaint about this game is that it's a shame they included the logo on the card backs. Did they really need to promote the very game we've already bought? I hate when publishers do this!
What I mean is, it would be the same 99% of the time. In munchkin it’s nearly always the player in second place that wins when everyone piles on to stop the first place player from winning. In this game here, who ever gets the engine going first, seems would win most of the time.
Scott B. You can say this about most engine builder games - they’re all about being the most efficient to build your engine right? Munchkin is entirely different as it’s all related to everyone bashing each other. This is an optimisation puzzle based on the cards in your hand.
Not simply most efficient, but the one who starts it first. That’s all luck. I liken it to Munchkin because the winner is a forgone conclusion and, to me, doesn’t seem much fun.
I was onboard until Nikki brought out the Mermaid. Being able to just convert basic resources into VPs in such a low-scoring game if you happen to have the two required cards seems extremely broken.
It's always nice to see Rodney on an episode of Game Night! Great rules explanation! However, having watched this and the Gizmos episode, they seem very similar. Having played both of them, can the Game Night crew or Rodney weigh-in on any subtle differences that might skew a purchase in either direction?
