A woman at home alone hides under the bed and calls 911 when burglars break in. This segment was taken from Episode 616 which aired on January 31, 1995 on CBS. This particular version of the segment was recorded after the Family Channel starting cutting episodes to make room for commercials, so it may have small parts missing.
Vote for Rescue 911 to be released on DVD at www.tvshowsondv... and to be put back on television at www.petitiononl...

People should always have their addresses on their houses and easy to see!!! I worked for the post office and it was so frustrating how hard some houses are to find. I can only imagine if you're trying to answer a 9-1-1 call and can't find the right house!! And, also, most emergencies happen at night when it's dark. So mark your house well!

Back in 2004, my townhouse was broken into while I was at work. When I got home, I found some things out of place and some Christmas presents ripped open and thrown about. At the time there was talk about a lion on the loose in one of the nearby suburbs. The presents that had been ripped open were food-scented candles, and I thought an animal had gotten in (didn't have my cats at the time). It was disorienting, and a strange light in the kitchen distracted me from initially noticing all of my DVDs gone. I went into the kitchen and found the fridge open and food thrown about. That's when I saw the cupboards open and the back door unlocked and open. Realizing somebody had gotten in, every scene from every horror movie I've watched flooded my head with thoughts of somebody coming up behind me. Fearing somebody could still be there, I ran out the front door and called 9-1-1. Two officers arrived. Watching them go inside with guns drawn was the scariest thing I've ever gone through. They didn't find anybody. Insurance covered my losses. Turns out there had been a rash of daytime break-ins in the neighborhood when people were at work. Two days before Christmas, sheriff deputies caught a 20-year old kid in the act of breaking into a house south of my place. He never wore gloves at any of the crime scenes and was linked up with all of them. As it turned out, I had seen the kid before. The townhouses on both sides of mine were empty at the time. When the guy two doors down from me was out of town, his teenage daughters were having some wild parties with lots of kids out on the yard in front of the four townhouses that make up our building. The kid that had been arrested had been at those parties, apparently seeing that nobody was on either side of my place, and targeted me. While I didn't get any of my things back, his arrest was the best Christmas present I got that year.

I used to live in North Andover Ma. Trust me that place was a very rough town and you had to be careful who you spoke to and trusted. The Police in that town are serious this was in 2002 when you called for help even if it was for something tiny and minor they would send three Patrol cars.

In the case of an active intruder, particularly if the police are unsure of the residence, lights and siren should be used to try to scare them out of the house. Main priority is keeping the occupant safe, not catching the criminal.

I guess if someone breaks into your house and you're stuck in your room, the closet and under the bed are about the only places to hide. I guess most people go for the bed since burglars are probably going to look through the closets for stuff to steal.

Not entirely true - a burgler will cost you more in property damage LOOKING for valuables than if they'd just found them right away. Best policy is to leave a decoy cash/jewelry stash in one of the first places they'll look - an amount that looks genuine but isn't a total loss either. $500 in the top dresser drawer for example. Remember, if they broke in, they probably won't leave until they find something or destroy everything trying.

"We're trained in that situation to be as quiet as possible." That's what really ticks me off about 911 operators. They don't freaking get it. You call and give them your address and all of the details, and they act like there is more and more that you need to tell them. While I understand that they are to keep you on the phone as long as they can, in this situation, it's unsafe to talk.
@germandude5181
@germandude5181 6 лет назад
They often don't tell you to talk, they keep you on the line so they know that you are still alive and safe. If police officers enter they wan't to know where the victim is and that it is safe. If they hang up, the 911 dispatch and of course the responding LEOs have no contact to the victim and don't know if the suspects possibly found it.

That's my thought. You tell them to be quiet then keep asking questions. And if they can't talk it's quiet and the criminals may hear you on the phone. It's not like cell phones when you can just turn volume down. Smh they could have cost her her life

When someone breaches my walls, uninvited, I submit to you that they are the ones who should be looking for hiding places. I've survived a home invasion; never again will I be a victim in my own castle. And this is not hyperbole: if you put my life or my family's lives at risk, you better bring an entire company of thugs, body armor, a couple of tanks, fully automatic weapons, and a willingness to die for your cause. Because it *will* be me or you. And if for some reason I don't prevail, I'm going to go out shooting until my last breath or the shock sets in. Better bring your A game and be on point...

I didn't see the comment before yours, as it's been removed, however, a paintball gun (one that looks like a handgun, like one of those I own) can be very affective against those who pose a threat. They hurt very badly when you shoot someone who is within 10 feet of you, someone not wearing any protective gear, as well.

Well if the intruder knows you're in the house and is looking for you, then I can see why you might want to hide somewhere else. However, if the intruders are just robbing the house and assuming no one is home, they're probably not going check under the beds. I think a locked door might be more of a give-away that someone was home. There was another episode where a woman locked her bedroom door, and the burglars just kicked it open.

The other was convicted to the Department of youth services? For what? He should have been sentenced to prison just like the other one.

I was 22 years old. Moved into an apartment in a rougher area in Charlotte, N.C. back in 2010 after finishing college. I had just fallen asleep with my then-girlfriend when our apartment door was kicked off its hinges at 2AM by 4 large dudes. Two had guns, one had a knife, and I never saw the forth guy (she did, said she didn't see anything). No masks. Rope was found in the grass 100 yards or so from our building. They were not there to rob. At the time, I hated guns. Didn't understand them and thought they were a mark of paranoia, not preparation. On a whim, about a month before this happened, after hearing about recent break-ins in our complex, I bought a Maverick 88 12-gauge shotgun, loaded it with buckshot, and put it under my bed on "safe" - "just in case." That one "on-a-whim, just-in-case" decision saved our lives that night. Our door opened and two guys stepped into my doorframe and were met with the sight of me with the shotgun over the side of the bed, with my girlfriend crouched under me. One guy screamed "Gun!" and they all scampered like the rats they were. No shots fired (one more step and I would have). 30 minute police response time. It can happen any time and anywhere to anyone. Fast forward a decade: that shotgun stays loaded and under my bed, with a loaded AR on each side of our bed, with 4 30-round loaded magazines accessible on each side. A Glock 19 with 3 extra magazines and an FNX .45 with 2 extra mags sit on our respective nightstands. It was a terrifying experience that still haunts me to this day. Which is why I tell everyone who will listen: fuck your politics. You have a right to live. Get a gun. Get training. Get your CCW. Then get more training. Never put your life in the hands of someone else's values, mood, addiction, etc. Never be a victim.

Yeah, I'm not a conservative, but I feel like a lot of people who say there's no reason to keep a gun in the house are suburbanites who have always lived in relatively safe, populated areas. I've personally never lived in an area where I felt the need to own a gun, but I would definitely consider it if I were living in a high-crime or isolated area.

This is why people need guns, and this is EXACTLY what guns should be used for. If there is someone in your house who should not be and you LEGALLY own a firearm, it's perfectly legal in most if not all states to open fire on said intruder because in that type of situation you shouldn't wait for the other person to show a weapon or harm you.

Cheaper too. We don't have to pay for their ass to sit in prison repeatedly.

In reality people rarely have a chance to get and load their guns as it all happens so fast. Better to keep a phone on or near you, the police will be there within a few minutes. Make sure there is always a phone and an alarm i.e. your car alarm right by your bed.

Anna Loveberry Babycakes I learned a very valuable lesson. I worked for this very wealthy man, who owned guns. He said never shoot the intruder in the back or you will be charged. I do not know if this is true in all states but that is what he told me. He said I have 6 guns in my office, all strategically placed. Gosh I felt so weird after him telling me that. Now the government is trying to pass gun control, which I think is ludicrous bcs you have the right to protect your family and home.
