In my younger days in the 1960s people rode in the back of pickups all the time. They still do on farms and off road locations. Incidents like this made states outlaw it. The sheer love of Heather's family and friends likely helped her in her recovery.
The mom of the girl that fell out of the back of the truck holds so much guilt. That really how many of us 80s kids wrote in the back of pickup trucks just about every single one of us.
Heck, I was born in the late 90s and even as a kid my grandmother always let us ride in the back of her truck *if we weren’t going far*. Even today in New Hampshire there’s no law requiring the use of seat belts *for adults*. There’s risk for everything we do. Even in this scenario. Who’s to say even if she was riding in the cab she wouldn’t have smashed her face against the dash when her mother *who wasn’t paying attention* slammed on the breaks? Whether someone is riding in the back or the cab the risk for serious/fatal injury is there regardless.
It was legal back then. I rode in my Uncle’s truck all the time when I was a kid. I was an 80’s child. Even now, we’ll let the kids ride in the back to the beach, when we go to the lake house but it’s only a 4 minute drive from the house at 10 mph and at least 1 legal adult is back there with them.
@@DivineMagickOccult it sounds like you're being extremely cautious allowing them to ride in the back. I know exactly what you mean. I've done it too with my children. Some people are so quick to judge. But we survived and our parents let us ride in the back I'm busy streets. So I figure driving in the back on back roads it's probably pretty safe
Very touching story. .mom, everyone makes mistakes. Be thankful your beautiful daughter is still here. I definitely cried watching this episode. God bless your beautiful family.
I was born in 1985 born in 1985 and I don't know who got the right in the back of a pickup I have a mind of a 5-year-old and my permanently handicapped and blind my name is Bonnie by the way
I remembered riding on the back of the pickup truck when I was little like age 3-6, and never had an accident. I survived the ride without getting injured.
We grew up riding in the back of pickups, riding on trailers, etc., all over the farm. My Dad was always very careful and it was rare we rode in the back off property. On one occasion we rode with our dogs 55 miles to our new home, most of it down the freeway at 65 miles per hour. It was COLD, and the Newfie we had could have thrown either one of us out, but he hunkered down under something. Riding with a camper in place was another matter, we did that all the time. The worst that ever happen was when I rode right at the back and Daddy hit the brakes real hard. This wasn't a small truck, either, it was full size and I went flying eight feet to the front. Dad stopped to check, I had a couple bumps but was fine. I think that's the last time he ever let me ride in the back, but later on I did it again in Navy transports and even in my own trucks with a trusted friend driving. If we had seat belts, Daddy was adamant that we wear them. If not, we just hung on. Heck I got a lot worse than that on my bike, jumping it into sucker rod gates, running into cars with it, crashing several times at speed, etc.
I was negative eleven years old in 1993 haha, I'm so glad that Heather survived though. Her family seems so loving and they didn't deserve to have that accident happen
You should check out more 1990 ish shows like TNG, Hunter,,and Deep Space Nine. Cops is really good, too. It was different back then. I was about 15-16 years old beck then.
I remember on another posting of this segment...one of the comments was from Amber, the younger sister and she said there are other siblings in the Eldrid family...but because they weren't relevant to this story they aren't shown here…
I was at the same hospital TWICE when I was 7 I had a MAJOR surgery done on my auditory nerve and again when I was 12 I had Bacterial Meningitis like Heather when I was 7 I had to learn to write walk and everything LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Today Heather is 39 and Amber is 38. I suppose they’re both married with children of their own now. I’m sure Heather tells her kids not to ride in the back of pickup trucks because those pickup truck bed don’t have seatbelts.
It's true medics don't get the thanx and recognition they deserve. I am a firefighter in school for medic now. But medics keep people alive to make it to the hospital so docs can work on them. But docs r the ones getting all the praise. Well if it weren't for the medics patients wouldn't make it to the hospital in the first place.
We used to always ride in the back of my dads truck. One day, we are planning on going to the lake & my mom absolutely refused to let us ride in back. Said she had a dream of me flying outta the back. On the way to the lake, we are in an accident. Thank God for her dream.
I lost a friend of mine earlier this year in a car accident like this, he was riding in the back of the truck when it was t-boned by a nursing home van that was speeding up at the light, this is an example of never let anyone ride in the bed of a pickup truck.
Not intubating through the nose doesn’t make sense. She’s either going to d*e from lack of oxygen or d*e from efforts being made to survive. It’s always better to at least try. So relieved she lived.
I remember when I was little me and my brother rode in the back of my dad's White Ford Ranger and we rode around the neighborhood and thankfully we did not get bounced off
I remember when this first aired. This were aired at a time a lot of people didn't wear seatbelts and rode in the beds of trucks, things today that people wouldn't even think of doing. Maybe it was a bit of "propaganda" to scare people into not riding in the beds of trucks to show what can happen when things go wrong, but you don't see it nearly as much as it was back then. Glad that this story had a happy ending, a lot of times these incidents ended in fatalities.
If I was the paramedic treating Heather, I would’ve started a big fight with the base station doctor who said do not intubate her!! I would have said god damnit 5:01 she needs this nasal intubation immediately!!!
In some states its illegal to have someone ride in the back bed of a truck under the age of 18, but in California it is not allowed unless a federal-approved restraint system restrains you while in the bed of the truck.
It is GREAT that laws need to me made to prevent people from being VERY STUPID. When common sense should tell EVERYONE that it is irresponsible and dangerous to allow or to ride i the back of a truck (anywhere the beach paddocks ect).
I'll tell you something. I was considering asking my dad to ride on the truck bed in his old truck, but when I saw that segment, I realized I shouldn't do it. That was when I decided not to ask my dad about doing that. I never even send a letter to CBS about that.
I remember once Daddy forgot I was back there. He hit the brakes real hard and I went flying. He apologized profusely, I just looked up and said, we're good, I'm fine...but ouch!
When I was a little kid, maybe 6-7 I begged my dad my dad to let me ride in the back and he did but he put the top on and only went around the block my mom lost it after on my dad XD
No it’s not her fault. She made a mistake by letting her ride in the back of the truck 🛻. Instead of inside next to her sister . Don’t mom Heather’s mom
It is a law in pretty much every state and all Canadian provinces, but that doesn't stop fools from ignoring the emergency vehicles or just not paying attention.
Lets flip the tables....what if one of the surgeons or doctors at the hospital fell out of the bed of a pick-up truck and needed an oral to stay alive..........???? You wouldn't lose your job for saving the life of a fellow emergency doctor!!!!
The girl in the back of truck should have moved close to the window of the truck not hanging around the tailgate part. I grew up when people did that but they didn’t hang around the tailgate part.
Okay I am happy that she made it but I'm not happy that all the cars did not move for the ambulance if an ambulance has lights and it sirens on move out of the way please the ambulance has to go to the hospital not follow you guys
@Chris BradleyTrue is there a samurai situation where I live one day it was a Black Friday I think and there was this big group of cars that were waiting for the traffic light to turning and before they knew it there was an ambulance with it sirens and its lights on approaching them fast and they couldn't get out of the way because the light was red so I don't understand it's a TV show and I do understand sometimes it's hard to pull over from ambulance or emergency vehicles
I worked EMS for 14 years, and had MANY instances where drivers could not move d/t a red light. In that case we usually stopped behind them and waited until the light turned green then restarted the lights & siren. Still ran into a lot of situations where drivers could have moved over but did not, sometimes because they chose not to, other times because they were unaware of us. I do remember seeing 1 driver get a ticket for failure to yield to both us and the RCMP.
It was a different time when it was more common/normal for people to ride in the back. People need to stop judging things that happened way back in the past to today's standards.
this is stupid specically a child who should be legally buckle, its legal in nh as long as your above 18 but i wouldn't allow it with my buddy... im not risking someone life
@Chris Bradley i am not really buying that persay Chris cause i find very hard to believe not to mention if she not on main roads.. backroads are ususally 25 mph residental streets.. this is clearly going at least 30. " i never got into an accident' that part of her sad thinking I am not claiming your lying Chris i am just staying hard time beleiving it
when i was two i snuck into the bed of my dads pickup truck, he had no idea i was in there until he got on the highway and i popped my head up infront of a off duty cop, my dad had a near heart attack and grabbed me and sat down on the road freaking out
