Born in 1902. That man came from the horse and buggy days to a modern jet liner cruising at 37,000 feet in the 1990's...God Bless Him. Apparently, he was a wireless operator with morse code at one time in his life.
Americans helping a British friend in need shown here and vice versa elsewhere. This is one tie that binds both America and Britain as well as many other countries so closely together, and I hope it NEVER stops; helping people in need that is.
Awesome job. Very lucky to have docs on the plane. There was a similar story where a man had a bleed on the lung and they asked if there was a doctor on the plane. About 100 hands went up. There were a load of senior doctors going to a convention. 2 of the British docs were actually lung specialists! They operated on the patient with clingfilm and a wire coat hanger! That old man in this story was so lucky. As soon as I heard the old man speaking I knew he was Welsh under the Yorkshire accent!
I've been a first aider for 22yrs & I'm training to become a physician assistant. This is one of the things you have to be ready for, but you hope you'll never have to do! It can so easily go wrong, but by it's very nature, this is one of the things you have to do as a last resort when the heimlich maneuver doesn't work. This is every medics worst nightmare because of how easily it can go wrong, no matter how well trained you are. These guys did such an awesome job!
I think there is still enough people to carry around Swiss army knives, myself included. Can't say I ever want to give someone an emergency tracheotomy though 😅.
This man just encapsulates everything I love about being British. He never fretted and came up with some hilarious lines in his end segment. Also shows another example of us Brits and the Americans loving each other. There's a special bond between our nations
We expect the elder man has passed away, yes. Shocking is the main doctor featured here, Dr. Charles Plotkin, passed away on December 2, 2010, at the age of 52.
There are many wonderful stories about how great Swiss Army Knives are and what they've done to help people and this is one of the best! They've also helped NASA astronauts in space, climbers on Mount Everest and just this year helped two men reach the North Pole.
📍This is an amazing episode! Thank goodness for those two doctors on board the airplane. Then to see them at the end, a very sweet elderly couple been together for 44 years they said. 💞 They seemed so happy.. R.I.P. 🙏 What he said at the end is how I have always Been & I thought I was the only one that thought that way for awhile.. about the last word always being ‘I love you’❣️With Everyone in my family I always make sure to say “I love you”, and then hang up the phone or leave. If anyone happens to say bye, then I have to redo the whole thing. 🤦♀️ Now with my six year old son I do the same thing, so like.. “ I love you.. have a good day...see you later ...love you..” I’m glad I do I’ve had family members pass away and I’m very glad the last thing I said was “I love you” Just last week My uncle passed away from a massive heart attack so this really hit close. I’m still in shock and believe when we have the service it will hit.. I’m very worried about my 93 yr old grandmother and my mother and don’t know what to do.. I’ve been avoiding it and just thinking what needs to be done.. he lives in Toronto and we are in Florida so his children are going to bring him down after he’s...ready.. sorry.. can’t say it.. anyhow.. great episode.. thank goodness for the Doctors.. Always tell your loved ones that you love them.. Stay safe everyone..❤️☮️💙☯️❤️✝️💙
They show had researchers who looked up news articles and called various rescue agencies to see if they had any interesting rescue stories. Sometimes the people involved wrote to the show to submit their story for consideration.
Unless Mr. Sykes is 111 yr.s old, he and Dr Plotkin are getting re-acquainted in the afterlife ! So sorry the Dr. died so young, glad Mr. Sykes lived so long.
Jack Sykes passed away in June 1997 aged 95. He invented some kind of morse code device called S-R Cotel. He was also known by his amateur radio callsign, G3SRK.
My dad's ⌚ has the logo of a Swiss Army knife. NEVER EVER eat your food in large pieces at all. Choking occurs and it's important that you MUST cut your food in small pieces with knives that are made special for cutting it into teensy weensy pieces at all times. NEVER EVER use knives for stabbing.
Amazing this 89-year-old man survive the choking onboard that plane. The best part I think is the man said he always tells his wife "I love you" before he goes to sleep. Thank god they we're two doctors onboard.
When the the passenger appears and says "I'm a doctor" you can see the look of relief on that flight attendant's face. Looks like "oh thank god. This is all yours!"
Watch the one where a man gets stabbed through the heart and knife pulses every time his heart beats, and see if you still think this is the sickest. It's segment 4 from Episode 211.
What a great ending to the story. So I wonder what would happen if this happened today, considering the chance of a real knife getting on board is probably pretty slim.
I know this was pre-9/11 but I find it funny how two things happened. 1.) Pocket knife allowed on aircraft and 2.) The Flight Attendant just walked right into the flight deck without any problems getting in, as if the door was unlocked.
If I was there when he said he'd have to cut the neck I would have been like "WHAT?!?" then once he started I would have gone "omg..." then fainted. O_O
On a personal note we thank you for helping the United States in Afghanistan and Iraq with our war on terrorism campain.THANK YOU and God bless America and Great Britain
I remember this one well!! It was interesting, because 1) It's a choking segment. 2) It's in an airplane where getting to a hospital would be very not practical because they are so high up!!
I think that he meant to say he didn't expect bleeding on that level. A tracheotomy will always produce some blood but this man was bleeding to death. An emergency tracheotomy is one of the worst situations someone can find themselves in. You can train for 20 years and it's still nearly impossible to perform perfectly
Why not cancel a different show along with the rest instead of Rescue 911? We all learn a lot more and faster when watching Rescue 911. It shows everything in details. They don't in practice presentation as second option if first one doesn't work. You got more then enough votes to get this show back on air, so what's taking so long? If this finally gets back on air again, please show new ones since we are watching old ones over and over again on this RU-vid? Won't watch the old shows on TV.
@WhatPost You have to remember that this was PRE 9/11 so back then you were allowed to have one. If this were to happen today the man would probably die because no one on board would have the knife to be able to save his life.
This is the sickest, most awesomest Rescue 911 ever, there can be no debate. Genius! Better than MacGyver or whatever his name was ... He's before my time LOL
To everybody that wants to know: In jet airliners normally there is at least one emergency first aid kit and a bag whit drugs and other advanced equippment for healtcare professionals! (Paramedics, Nurses, Physicians) and sometimes even a defibrillator (AED or semi-auto) depending on airline and local laws
@melodie973 CBS was behind in the ratings in the 1994-1995 season, so they cancelled a bunch of their old shows to try out new ones. Rescue 911 was one of the shows that got cancelled.
hey allgood? why did they take 911 off the air? it was a good show i mean it tough atlot of people not just adults but kids too what to do if they ever got stuck in the situation. do you think there is some way if every one where to write a letter asking to reair the show rescue 911?
@bluesy92 most airlines have a doctor's kit on board which has scalpels, stitching tools bandages etc. They are usually sealed and accessible only to the cabin crew.
I once had a really bad choking incident when I was 18. I just had my wisdom teeth pulled out and I had a bad reaction to the medication (took them wrong). I was so hungry afterwords that mom made me venison chops before she left for an errand ( I shot that deer myself). While I was busy snarfing down the venison a piece got lodged in my throat. Terrified, I could not dislodge the piece, I started to get dizzy. Then I remembered that I can't brush my tongue because it gives me a gag reflex.
Before assuming to cutting his neck, one of them should of done an upper thrust while the victim was lying down first. Upper thrust is part of heimlich maneuver. But, I don't think anyone who was involved knew nor were trained to do that on someone who's choking. I learned on one of the episodes of Rescue 911. Otherwise, I wouldn't know about it, either. Thanks Rescue 911!
Abdominal thrust while the patient is laying down is part of the procedure. Problem is we are talking about 2 Doctors who spend they're Time in a Hospital. A EMT would have tried. But the man lived, that's the important part.
