Great video jason. I have found that alot people dont consider the roots when putting Japanese maples in full sun all day every day. If the tree has a healthy root system full of fine fibrous roots then its more than likely will be able to handle full sun and the warm wind if supplied with water when needed. The roots are then able to keep the moisture with in the leaves. Obviously if it gets to hot then some shade will be needed but most importantly healthy roots leads to healthy leafs throughout the growing season. I have also found that a tree can also push larger leaves after defoliating and i only really use the concept to increase ramification, increasing the bud selection for the next season that would decrease leaf size naturally (doesnt work for all species of trees 😅) But i really enjoyed this video and feel that alot of people can benefit from what has been shown 👍

Good stuff! I use shade cloth, I’m gone 13hrs a day for work and it’s been SUPER HELPFUL. But leaf scorching is still something I have to deal with
@TheBonsaiGarden

Thanks. I don’t really have the option to use a shade cloth, but have more shaded spots around the garden - so move the trees accordingly 👍

I have I think a blood good and it doesn’t seem to like any direct sunlight whatsoever I have it growing under a large tree and still gets leaves drying out

Maples are under-story trees, being smaller than many other trees so are used to growing in the dappled shade beneath larger trees. We need to be aware of this in their care and avoid prolonged strong sunlight, and also strong breezes which also contribute to evaporation.

Thank you so much for this great video. I've used this technique before, but learned a lot about the tree physiology - extremely helpful since I have other species that are prone to scorching. Do you notice any correlation with leaf scorch and trees re-potted the same spring?
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 2 месяца назад
Thanks Sue. To be honest I mostly have the issue with this tree - it’s my smallest red tree - both of which can make it more susceptible. This is the second time it has undergone a full defoliation. With my other trees I tend to just cut off the largest, disproportionate looking leaves. Root pruning will affect the rate of water uptake until the roots heal, so can have an impact and possibly increase likelihood of leaf scorch. It is best to put trees in a shaded spot immediately after repotting and root work while they recover.

This one seems to be prone to it. I had to fully defoliate it about three years ago.

Hi Jason, great video, as usual, beginner, never defoliated, if you defoliate and get a second flush of smaller leaves, does it make any difference to the size of next year's leaves? Thanks
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 2 месяца назад
Thank you Howard. It affects only this years leaves which will drop in autumn. Next year’s first flush of leaves will be regular size again.
