Ham Radio Save Lives Again! This time, a couple of Ham Radio Operators were off-roading and got their vehicle stuck in the mud, in the back-roads of Big Bend National Park. They used their Satellite gear to make contact with AO-92 and were rescued by local forest rangers. Take a look at the video!

Actually, I keep my FT70 in my roller bag. Comes in handi. Pun intended! I actually made a Skywarn report on it during a Houston frog drowning summer thunderstorm! NC was shocked when I told NC that I had heavy rail with hail at the Wheeler Transit Center on the Red Line on METRO! Never know when you might need it!

Oh yeah DL88 is one of the hardest CONUS satellite grids to get, it's just a tiny sliver of land in the Southern part of that park, so you have to go all in like this to put it on the air. RIP AO-92, she was a good bird.

A very good friend of mine got stuck with his car in the mud on a trail somewhere out in California. No mobile phone connection nor other cars out there. Four european guys, one drunk, one in panic and two worked for more than 5h to get the car free. Not enough water for a 2 day hike back to a road with regular traffic. They got the car going again. Exhausted for 3 days afterwards. But potentially very dangerous (and obviously idotic). Having some ham radio stuff in the bag is always not the worst idea :) 73 de DL8YF

I set up my WSPR beacon to order pizza. It worked great. Although it took about a week for the pizza to come from New Zealand where the station heard my call

People, Ham radio CAN save lives, but it's far from the best when it comes to wilderness comms. Your best bet is a garmin inreach mini. It costs the same as a nice HT and anyone in your group, even kids, could use it to call for a rescue. If you do outdoors things, get one, it's very worth it.

The Garmin still relies on an infrastructure though, and it requires a subscription. However, I plan to get one soon

@@HamRadio2 Yeah, that's part of the beauty of it though as the SOS is routed to an operations center where they can contact the proper authorities and oversee and coordinate the whole rescue. This story is awesome none the less!

@@ChrisBeiting that is really cool! Any idea what satellite network it's using? I saw apple said it might not work above 62° so I don't think it's using the same iridium network as the garmin. One less device to carry is nice but I'm an open-source/right to repair fan boy so I'll never give apple my money.
