The Animal Rescue Team began caring for six Kemp's ridley sea turtles this week. These endangered turtles suffered from hypothermia known as cold-stunning. When exposed to abrupt cold temperatures before or during their migration, sea turtles lose their sense of direction and suffer from frostbite, malnutrition, dehydration, infection, and even death. These six turtles are among the annual mass stranding event in MA.
Luckily, the sea turtles were found alive and brought to Mystic Aquarium for veterinarian care. Upon arriving, they received admin exams which included radiographs and blood draws. The sea turtles also are dehydrated, so we provide them with fluids. Over the next few months, we will share the Animal Rescue Team's care for the turtles, so the Kemp's ridley sea turtles can regain their strength and return to the open ocean.
