People like me admiring Steiger tractors and others let them rust and totally exposed to the weather. I really like the imbalance between me knowing that Steiger doesn’t come back and you should preserve these tractors and those that own them and that don’t care at all 😂😂😂
Yea I don't understand how some people just don't care about their equipment and let them rot. I could never just let my stuff sit and rot right before my eyes. Well it doesn't matter anymore for these Steiger's. Now that they are in our hands we will fix them up and restore them to their former gory!
Great to see someone saving those old girls. I used to own a late model 4366 IH/Steiger crossbreed. I always wanted a green Steiger with the 3306. The 4366 was a super clean low hour tractor but it lacked comfort and modern refinements for its day. Mine had 3 point and solid dish 10 bolt wheels and duals like the 4586 from the factory. The wheel dish was about 1/2” thick. It had 18.4 X 38 Firestones. Pretty good for a small 4 wheel drive. But I definitely wasn’t a fan of the differentials set up, sort of oddball antiquated set up borrowed from IH’s 2 wheel drive tractors. Would have preferred Steiger’s axle’s.
I was always intrigued by those tractors. I always heard the axles where weak on them but I always thought they were cool. Definitely good tractors in there day!
The articulated tractors that Steiger built for IH, did indeed suffer from axle issues and transmission issues also, from what I've heard. The axles and trannies were supplied by IH themselves. Also, in the largest Steiger built IH artics, IH insisted on using their own V8 - 550 engine, which wasn't very reliable by all accounts, basically being a derivation of one of their truck engines. If over revved, they could be problematic. All V8 engines, regardless of brand, have to be revved fairly high in the rev' band, as that is where they generate their power, but typically, their torque output isn't all that good. Another disadvantage of V8 engines is that they're also heavier on fuel use - two extra pistons 'to feed', plus the higher revving, gets through more fuel. Really did like the styling of them though.
Now I see why you guys are so excited. Some clean fuel and new filters, and good batteries, and let em rip. So far all I see is minor problems! If they turn over, they will run one way or another. @@Ron-zi3cg I'm old enough to remember seeing them in their prime in the eighties. Never seen them pulling anything small, 😆. Neighbor had a Bearcat, I always thought the Steiger Panther looked best, was named best.
@@nodaklojack around where I live, they used to be alotta farms and they was a fella that used to have some property south of us, that had one of these, do know for sure it was a steiger, don't know which mode it was though, we was goin by him on the road one day, we was on the way home that day, I probably couldn't been more than 13 or 14 at that time I guess, am now 60 years old at this time, grew up on a farm.
Those old girls will scrub up nice and hopefully give you many years of reliable service, I hate seeing machines sitting idle that are in great condition when parked or still lots of life in them. The 3406 CAT is a beast.
I've always wanted a Steiger with a 3406 Cat because everyone says they are the best. I know for a fact that these two Steiger's are gonna keep living and definitely get the care they deserve :) I agree with not liking good tractors being neglected. I like to take good care of my equipment. I can't wait to get these tractors all cleaned up.
@@TheSteigerChannel yes there's a lot of Steiger Tractors here in Australia many with CAT 3406 engines. Farmers know their worth and most keep them running as long as possible. Unfortunately there's also those that Luke the creature comforts of newer technology CASE, John Deere, CAT, New Holland etc.
@@ScottSillis o wow you are in Australia. I am glad people in Australia love the Steiger's as well. I will agree that most of these newer tractors are way more comfortable and have way many more creature comforts but I would rather look cool driving a mechanical better machine such as a Steiger!

That first tractor, the PTA model has a smaller Intermediate Yoke than the Series III ST tractors, which have a much larger Intermediate Yoke. On the former tractor, the area being shown as previously welded up, is in the area where what was called a Uniball Bearing, was utilised. This allowed the two bogies to tilt independantly of one another in the horizontal plane, typically 15° either side of centre. This feature kept all four wheels in contact with the ground at all times. Apart from engines fitted, other differences between the Series III 'ST' and 'PT' tractors were that the former had a wider frame, at 44", with a wheelbase of 128", whilst the latter had a narrower frame at 39", with a wheelbase of 132•50". The 'PT' series were originally introduced to market in 1977, and optional equipment included a hydraulically driven PTO, which offered 105hp at 1000 rpm or 57hp at 540rpm. Another identifying feature of 'PT' models is that the Front Bogie has a continuous front frame, all the way to the nose of the tractor, whereas the 'ST' models had a split front frame, which was truncated just ahead of the edge of the front tyre. The additional part of the frame which ran forward to the nose, was a bolt on structure at said junction. Ostensibly, it may be argued that since the 'ST' Series III were introduced first (January 1976 I believe), the split front frame may have been an aid to easier engine installation, the latterly introduced 'PT' Series III (1977), made do with a continuous frame, which would argueably have been a stronger construction overall, not to mention, easier and cheaper to manufacture. The 'PTA' tractor featured at the start of this video, is basically a 'PT' series tractor, with an Automatic gearbox, hence the letter 'A' suffix in the model nomenclature. The 'auto box' would usually have been an Allison unit. Other differences between 'ST' and 'PT' tractors, were that 'ST' models usually utilised RABA axles, with dual planetary outboard hubs, whilst 'PT' models utilsed Steigers' own S 34 single planetary outboard hubs. Steiger built some of their 'PT' (and latterly 'PTA), tractor models for Ford, from 1977, based specifically on the 'Panther' model within the range. Four models offered, vis a vis; FW 20/30/40/60, all with Cummins V8 engines. The FW 20 had a 555 ci in engine (triple nickel), fitted, whilst the others had 903 cu in capacity engines fitted, with different fuelling rates. The largest model, the FW 60, was also turbo charged. Steiger 'ST' Series III usually featured what was called a Swinging Transfer Case, (effectively a drop 'box'), which I think may even have been patented. The idea behind it was to reduce driveline component angles during a turn. The 'PT' series tractors did not have this feature, only a rigidly mounted transfer box, which could either have 10 forward, 2 reverse, or 20/4 speeds with the dual speed 'box'.

I love the Steigers too, I got to drive a Steiger Bearcat when I was a kid, I was sure it had a V8 and a powershift 16 speed transmission but was told Steiger didn't make that configuration in. bearcat. I till loved them ever since.
I've operated Cat equipment and driven trucks with 3406's and the ONLY thing that will pull on highway with them IF they've been set up right are the old Mack hi-torquise engines and both will pull till they die. NOTHING like having one.
Gosh quite a find. Then Steigers seemed to have varing sizes of tires from big to small. My grandpaa bearcat had 30.5r32 inners with 18.4r34 duals on it.

Much like some "farmers" here in Ohio. They store a $ 3.000 camper in the barn and leave hundreds of thousands worth of equipment outside. Much like a neutered dog, I don't get it.....
Awesome find ‼️Glad that you are keeping the Steigers alive. Back in the mid/late 80's, I worked at a dealership that sold Steigers. I very plainly remember like it was yesterday, the steiger we sold that had an automatic transmission in it. I am not sure, but I thought it was 360 horse, but may have been 325. Anyway it was so weird to get into a tractor of that size and have no clutch pedal and no shifters sticking out of the floor. Great memory. Do you guys have any of the row crop steigers that have the Allis chalmers drive train components? Me being an allis chalmers fanatic, that's the one I want. Thanks
Thanks for commenting! I love the fact that you used to sell Steiger's. To me the automatic is just an awesome concept so I am very exited and can't wait to use it in the field. As to your question we do not have any row crop Steiger's. I also never knew they had Allis Chalmers components. What Model tractor are you referring to? I am very curious now. The only Allis Chalmers we have are our AC-440's.
@thesteigerchannel9956 I can't remember right off what model had allis chalmers drive train components, but will try to find out. The give away is that it will have bar axles rather then the typical outboard planetary. It's not the 440, I know all about that. It was much later. Had allis chalmers 4W305 transmission/front end/rear end. They must have even bought some of the shift console parts from allis, as there is a 5 forward/one reverse gated shift console, then a manual hi/low, plus a hi/low powershift (which allis called the power director). So total 20 forward and 4 reverse. I kind of gather that either steiger or allis or both wanted to keep the whole ordeal top secret. An engineer who was working for allis at the time, was best friends with an engineer at steiger. They had designed white tractors together, then went separate ways, one to steiger, other to allis. That's how it got put together
@@darrelschulte6214 I've only seen 1 bar axle Wildcat. I thought it was cool but I knew the bar axles where not gonna be as strong as the dana axles. Our Bearcat 1 and both AC-440's have the dana axles.
The owner wants to keep those. The one next to the PTA has bad injectors or something like that. It would be nice to get those but you can't save them all 😅
It's basically a scraper bucket that can pick up dirt from one area of the field and drop it in another section. They can use laser systems to level dirt evenly throughout the field as well.

On my MN dairy farm I sadly have no use for a 4wd but I now regret not saving the previous owner of the farms steiger around 30 years ago it was traded for a 4840 jd and a corn planter the guy on the other end of the trade was his father in-law so the trade happens some bad weather starts to come in the previous owner of the farm decided to grab the steiger and put it in the shed at his place well about 20 mins later fil is back jumps in the steiger and drove it 7.5 miles back to his farm for the 2nd time ans parked it on a concrete slab and was never moved since fil and his family had a bigger crop and feeder cattle op so no idea why they left it sit i have no idea the model but i know it had a blade and a pto sadly i think it was scrapped last summer i should have tried to buy it
@@TheSteigerChannel they may have sold the property last summer I noticed one afternoon as a friend of mine is a bit north of that site they had the blade off few weeks later everything out by the tractor was gone I'm an Allis guy so I save as many as I can from the 70s and 80s new equipment really doesn't get me excited my generation needs to find a love for the classics that built the farms they grew up on that r series or afs connect isn't gonna last as long as the 4440 or 1086 that grandpa had
