A friendly cat led us to a secret underground cat colony that's been reproducing out of sight for years, sending dozens of unsterilized cats out to create new colonies of their own. It's time to do something BIG to solve this crisis - and we need your help to make it happen. Visit flatbushcats.or... to learn more and donate today.

The moment you said "The employees said there's only adult cats in the colony." my brain immediately went "Oh, no, there's gonna be kittens. No way that many cats are in one place and there aren't some kittens from a recent litter."

I built a deck for a lady with a pet bird. She asked if I had a live trap for a mouse that she said was eating the birdseed spilled under the cage. I asked how many mice she had and she said “it’s just one” 😂 The first night we caught seven mice. Over the next few days we caught 15 mice. Cats are almost as prolific as mice

For mice, I have heard their ratios are: "for every one you see, there's probably 50--75 more." Maybe even more than that! Anyone know what the ratio is for cats?

"There are only adult cats here" is a really weird thing to be sure of in a fertile cat colony.

Mostly likely they only Saw adult cats. The kittens were young. Mama-cat must not have taken the kittens to "feeding time" yet. But, yeah. If you have unsteralized cats, kittens will appear.

Yes the kittens are just being hidden. Almost guaranteed tgere are kittens in a cat colony. Cats (mothers, in the first weeks) are in general very protective of their kittens.

I watched this with one of my two brothers laid on my chest purring his head off. They were rescues from a town called Leyland in Lancashire England. Without the two people who are at the core of the charity, and their volunteers I hate to think where my soft, spoilt boys would be. My wife and I are disabled and we are physically limited in what we can do but we do support our local cat rescue financially whenever possible.

I volunteer for a cat rescue group that mostly does TNR in the Bronx. The other day I overheard one of the rescuers saying she rescued a cat from a basement that was being put their by the building landlord because he felt sorry for the cats being abandoned by their owner and didn't want them on the streets. I guess his intent was noble but leaving them in basement was no good either. Fortunately the volunteer was there to rescue the cat from being rescued
@frauleinmona
@frauleinmona 2 года назад
I think the landlord probably thought it was better to put them in the basement than to leave them outside on the streets. Especially when it gets cold. At least they would have some shelter.
@benw9949
@benw9949 2 года назад
I'd say the basement is better than out on the streets, but the cats are probably in and out, using that basement as home base, a shelter out of the cold and wet. Yes, they need rescue, TNR, and if possible, foster/adopt. -- Where I am (Gulf Coast) there are no basements due to flood risks. (Except downtown has an underground area.) This means stray and feral cats are around apartments, etc. I was so thankful that a local TNR group came by recently. I wasn't thrilled with al their policy, but I do understand. It does what they can. It looks like they may have missed one or two mama cats who were clever enough to avoid them, and of course, there will be yet more cats who get dumped or abandoned to renew the cycle. But it will still relieve some of it. Two friendlies get some care by cat-friendly ppl like me. One doesn't have a set owner. The other might, but he's been showing up regularly now. I already have two cats (and one just had kittens) so I'm at the pet limit. But the friendlies are welcome to shelter in a storm. If I could do more, I would. It only makes a tiny dent, but I am glad I can do a little. After a year, one feral still won't get too near, but comes regularly for food. The two friendlies are welcome. The strays and ferals who come and go, I'm OK with. My current two cats are both rescues from this very situation, kittens from outside my apts. in the pkg. lot who came around. Until I had an apt., I didn't realize the scale of the problem.

My cat is a good mouser. He was a TNR cat. When he adopted me, I took him in to see if he was chipped and he wasn't. He is now chipped. The people at the shelter said I could keep him. He had the tell tale clipped ear which I knew nothing about. He caught a mouse in my house and I haven't see one since. Since he was feral he took a while to settle down with me. We had our share of scratching and biting sessions but now I am sure he loves me. He's now turning into a big old house cat which is fine with me and, I think, fine with him. I let him outside periodically so he can remember how things once were. He comes home when he gets hungry and resumes his new housecat life. The absolute best cats are the ones who adopt you.

The root of this problem are often owners who don't take their pets seriously. They aren't toys, they are a commitment. It's your responsibility to take care of the pet you adopted. It breaks my heart to hear stories how owners just leave their cats behind when they move. I understand you sometimes can't take them because your new apartment won't allow pets and you have no other options, but then find a good family, bring them to a shelter, reach out to guys like these here. And it's incredible how many cats are left unfixed. Flatbush Cats are heroes who tackle this impossible problem every day, pushing against the tide of neglectful owners and irresponsible breeders.

NYC needs to establish a 'cat island' where TNR-ed cats can be released and live out their lives away from predators and dangerous urban life, visited by tourists as the attraction. With a permanent cat clinic and cat cafes for year-round care and visitations. Governor's Island is accessed by ferry, and currently in NYC's control. It's a tourist destination only, with green space and little vehicular traffic. I think it would make a great cat island.

A terrible fantasy, and I'll tell you why: Each and every loose domestic cat, whether sterilized or fertile, is estimated through actual studies to kill between 160-180 wild animals each year, according to actual scientific studies done in America and Britain, and published. Cats have been responsible for singlehandedly extirpating many wild species already. Gone, forever. The more species that are destroyed, the more likely that ecosystem is to collapse. Cats are the second most invasive species on the planet, surpassed only by the mice they were genetically engineered to hunt. They're really not very good mousers, despite subjective impressions of people. Other techniques are far superior, but that's another topic. They indiscriminately hunt everything they can find, it's what we bred them to do, and they're not a part of nature: you only find cats where you find people. Wildlife cannot possibly evolve quickly enough to accommodate a manmade predator that was bred in just a few generations. They don't belong outdoors, even on your fantasy island... it's a harsh and brutish life... So certainly, a cat island is a well intentioned but very bad idea. In fact, on islands and entire continents where they've been introduced in the past, they've had to be removed because of the destruction they caused in the ecosystem. And in some places, laws have already been put in place so cat owners can keep the cats they already own... but they must be spayed/neutered, not allowed to roam, and the owners aren't allowed to get more. It's hoped that this way, the law isn't too draconian, and the cat issue will gradually reduce. That should ideally locally stop the problem over time... just as this Brooklyn project is hoped it will do. At the very least, this Flatbush Cats project will reduce a lot of suffering, but in my opinion, the cats will still be out there killing anything they find, and may even themselves be harmed when, for example, they eat a poisoned rodent, get picked off by a hungry raptor, get hit by a car, mauled by a dog, poisoned by a deranged person or one who indiscriminately uses pesticides or bird poisons, used as bait training for dog fights, catch communicable diseases that vaccines don't cover, get abscesses from catfights... they spread toxoplasmosis and can even cause a miscarriage in women. That is the other half of the equation that TNR folks don't usually address. There is no perfect solution, but this group is focusing on feral and stray cats. At least these guardians will continue to try and treat their illnesses and injuries, and reduce their populations to a manageable number! It's a never ending job, because some people will still continue to dump cats in alleys and not fix them, for a variety of reasons. Education of the public is going to be the other important job, not just the spay/neuter clinic which has an immediate impact on the population explosion. They already do this, and he's even educated me with his videos. This is the only man who has been able to logically explain to me the motivations of TNR, and I do have sympathy and admiration for what he's undertaken. I have respect for him. His explanations were solid, not sappy or saccharine. But also... I've been a Federal and State permitted wildlife rehabilitator for 38 years, and 47-48% of the animals I receive are cat-caught. That's nearly half my patients. And many, if not most, of them die or must be euthanized! Cats are really good at what they do (dogs crush, but cats mangle, and dog-caught wildlife is rare compared in numbers to cat-caught wildlife). It's so avoidable, if people would just spay/neuter and keep their cats indoors, or contain them in a catio. By the way, I'm a cat person, not a dog person, I love cats and miss having them, but a cat in a place full of caged wildlife patients like mine wouldn't be a very good idea, and I envy those who have kitties. So please don't call me a cat hater. But they don't belong roaming outdoors, for their own sakes and for the ecosystem at large, as well as community health. They have the potential to come home with the diseases in their mouths of every animal they've caught. Any biologist, ecologist, veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator will tell you the same thing. Cats shouldn't be roaming or be allowed to reproduce. And the Flatbush Cats project is doing something tangible about it, as well as an equally important role of educating the public. It's my job, too, but my job takes it a step further, an overview I'm forced to face daily, and sees what even fixed cats still do outdoors. So please... no cat island dreams. Cats were never meant to be in the wild, and they deserve to be spoiled at home. We know more now than we knew during ancient Egyptian times. They're not part of nature, they'd be an invasive and destructive presence even if you found an "island." Wildlife there wouldn't be prepared for it. I hope I've given you insight into why a cat island (or a domestic feral rabbit island, or goat island. any other domestically bred animal island we've already tried) is a really, really bad idea that will cause the cats untold suffering, and destroy its ecosystem. Introducing cats, or even wildlife that doesn't belong on a different continent, is a bad idea, We know better now. The best we can do right now is to at least stop the reproduction. That's what Flatbush Cats' goal is. And education will come along with it. So give a few dollars to them. Even the price of baby chicken, kitty litter and cat food has gone up! ;)

I disagree with painting all cats with the broad brush of "not good mousers". You'll end up mislabeling cats -- the 3 feral cats around my parent's house have eliminated their rat problem, and they leave mouse remains by their garage door often. Plus, you may harm the barn cat programs of many many rescues who help feral cats find new homes when there's no other option, and they also do good jobs of mousing. I think the "hunting capability" depends on the cat's personality and experience, like many other things.

Yes as far as I know that is mostly an U.S.A thing. To alert other maybe rescuers that individual cat has been fixed. To hopefully prevent people taking these cats into to "be rescued". Sadly they go from a probably ok ish out door life that they prefer to a pet shelter. Which is very likely crowded and under staffed. They run a very high risk of being euthanized.

There is no such thing as a cat overpopulation crisis. In NYC and most other cities it’s more like a human overpopulation crisis. Let the cats live and create their colonies! Let’s look at Turkey for a great example of animal freedom - cats don’t have to live in your stuffy apartment to not be considered “a problem” anymore. Also cats are great mousers, one of the best hunters on the planet.

Crying my eyes out. I had to put my beautiful baby girl down on 12/26/2022. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done. She had intestinal cancer. She hated going to the vet so much that I paid a vet to come to the house to euthanize her. When the doc left, I heard myself let out several guttural screams from the bottom of my soul. My baby was laying there, wrapped in a blanket, still warm. After 11.5 years I couldn't believe she was gone. I buried her in the back yard because I wanted her to be close to me. I've since regretted that decision because I wish I would have had her cremated and kept her ashes, but I had to just let it go. I spent $5,000 on healthcare and it was worth every penny because gave me 1.5 additional years with her. Watching this video just brought all of this up again. I'm so glad Vern got to have a good taste of the good life before he passed. To the gentleman who records these videos -- you have found your calling. Thank you and your crew for all you do. Brooklyn is lucky to have you.

It seems like an overwhelming problem sometimes, but then I see your videos & remember it's one kitty at a time, one litter at a time, one colony at a time, one neighbourhood at a time. And then suddenly one day you have empty cages & foster families twiddling their thumbs & the Animal Shelter is only at 78% capacity. Maybe not today or tomorrow. But one day soon. Thank you for everything you do, & blessings to you & all the folks working so hard to make these kitty lives better.

Kudos to your TNR efforts but still a miserable existence for cats living in freezing cold basements in winter and scorching hot conditions all summer. Also the hazards of street living, cruel humans, etc. Sometimes I think euthanasia is preferable to ongoing sub par lives. :-(

@zekec6088
@zekec6088 Год назад
I've been researching the effectiveness of TNR vs euthanasia. So much acrimony and polarization. I believe at this point that while TNR has been proven to effectively reduce the feral cat populations and eliminate feral colonies in many places, including my town where there was once a large feral cat clowder that has been virtually or totally eliminated, in places like Hawaii and Cozumel island, euthanasia should be considered. However, as much as the two sides of the TNR debate seem polarized and excessively emotional, the larger problem is not either of these sides, who, when it comes down to it, have more in common than those who ignore feral cats or don't care. It is the apathetic or ignorant majority, who don't know of this problem or don't see it as critically important. Because the majority of humans, at least in the US, don't know about or have an opinion on what to do about feral cats and their detriment to wildlife, I am inclined to believe that more effort should be put into educating the majority about the environmental impact of feral cats than arguing amongst ourselves in this bubble of those who already care. Already, peer to peer education has rapidly normalized keeping cats indoors.

You guys do such a great job. A few months ago I noticed a mother with her kittens on my drive. They're obviously feral but I phoned our local cat protection who my partner actually works for and they just couldn't do anything. They had a waiting list of over 200 cats needing help. Laura was going to bring home a trap so we could at least TNR them but it was just too difficult to get to them and then they just stopped showing up. We have a lot of foxes but I hope mom just decided that the place wasn't appropriate and moved them. We have our own cat Lily so even trying to bring them in wouldn't have been an option as she's not really the sharing type.

Actually cats are extremely good mouse and rat control. They only become bad when they're taken in and be fed by humans. A barn cat/stray will destroy rat populations.
