I totally agree. The "Season 1" guy totally had the perfect physical look for both the Superboy role AND the Clark Kent role. I also thought the way he portrayed Clark Kent in particular was completely ideal for the series. The guy who replaced him in Season 2 turned the Clark Kent character into a far bigger nerd/loser than Christopher Reeve ever did and basically ruined the series thereafter as a result. I own the First Season on DVD but refused to ever buy the later ones for that very reason. :)

Gerard Christopher who took over from John Haymes Newton was a much better actor and made much more of the part. But I agree that John Haymes Newton played the part straighter and looked more like the Superboy we imagine. The fact is however they are both really good in their different ways. I hope this reply doesn't come across the wrong way, but the only reason why Gerard "saved the series from being cancelled" is because he agreed to step into the role after John quit. And the only reason John quit is because the producers attempted to blackmail him into accepting the same low salary that he got for the first season. If John had stayed with the show for Seasons 2-4, and continued playing the character the same way, I believe the subsequent seasons would have been just as successful as they were under Gerard.
