Hey everyone and welcome back to Iowa Classic Cars! In Today's video we purchased two 1971-1976 GM cars, commonly referred to as "old irons". The first is a 1971 Chevrolet caprice 4 door hardtop, with a 396/402 big block and th400 transmission. The 2nd car is a 1973 Oldsmobile 98 with a 455 big block and th400. While these cars a re very rough, they will donate a vast majority of their parts to other cars to be put back on the road. If you enjoyed the video, please leave a LIKE rating and make sure to subscribe for more junkyard cars and junkyard rescues!

I use to work on cars like the one in your video all the time, back when they were common on the road still. I had a 76 Ninety Eight..... it was so bad, I left in in a local parking lot, windows down, with the keys in the ignition, and no one stole it. The police finally told me it needed to be moved, so I gave it to the shop where I worked for a derby car. It still needed work to make it good enough for a derby, so they didn't even want it. I ended up giving it to a local salvage yard. It was a 455 with every option Oldsmobile offered for 1976. It was a monstrous tank. I got it for free from a friends dad that bought it new. It had almost 400,000 miles. All the steering linkage was so worn out, the steering had about a half turn of play. Everything was shot on it, the brakes barely worked. The dash was lit up like a Christmas Tree with all the idiot lights it had. It would shift from first to second at 45+ then drive at 70+..... it had many vacuum leaks and must not have been getting vacuum to the modulator to make it shift correctly. I tried to blow the 455, but it didn't even run good enough to get enough revs to blow. The one good thing about it, it was mostly rust free and had a mint interior.... the front seat had been reupholstered, correctly at one time, so it matched the rest of the interior perfectly. The salvage yard sold its interior and most of the body sheetmetal..... so it did save some other Nighty Eight's. That Chevy has some rare options for that era.

@OldCarAlley

@@IowaClassicCars Yes, but the drivetrains of that era would easily do four or five hundred thousand miles with routine maintenance, if the bodies didn't rot away first.

Nice to see that you´re looking to save these nice cars, i´m that guy who really love the 4-door hardtop roof/Body style and i´m still restoring an ´67 Chevy Caprice 4 Door hardtop, rebuilded all 4 wheel arches, especially the front fender wheel arches was made with hand shaped/hammered new sheet metal because i live at bavaria and there aren´t junk yards to get better fenders, so it was a hard but nice job to get them back into rust free, new sheet metal condition :) I really learned to shape and weld on this project! & yes, i´m proud of learning this sheet matal work, never thought that this work could be so nice, too! The same done with the whole lower windshield frame, and still working on the trinklid weatherstrip channel (hope i name all right, because yes, my language is german and english is that laguage what i had to learn at school, but more with rebuild and trade with those us classic cars, too! :) The Chevy ^^ is a father son project of me and after i´ve finished it, i´, looking for ansother one mid - fullsize 4 door hardtop; Are you selling sometimes anyone of your finds??? Because i was interested to get another one for even the next father son project :) I love rescue these cars, because it looks to be ordinary to save the "Muscle Cars" or even 2 door smaller sized us classic cars. But so less people have the eyes to see the beauty and importand history behind the 4 doors, mid- & fullsized us classics, hmmh...What is a little sad, because for me it smells like the american way of drive to drive these larger 4 doors on the roads, too! :) Have a nice day an best wishes from bavaria! Cheers Till

In the end it had JC Whitney headers, B&M Quick Silver shifter, Offenhauser intake manifold, Holley vacuum secondary carb, pointless ignition and glass packs.
