We got a call a few weeks ago about 2 free airplanes, so that means we are heading to Mississippi to check them out! We met up with Larry and Emily who showed us around the airport and donated the two planes in memory of their brother and husband, Arve. After taking a look at the planes we decided to take them...but the trailer we brought isn't big enough. Find out on this episode of Rebuild Rescue how we get these two free airplanes home!

I'm not sure how much give is in the suspension. But a friend of mine gets his side by side in a toy hauler by strapping the suspension together. Pulling the tires closer together so it will clear the doorway. It makes it not as wide.

I recently saw the video about your landing incident, and it reminded me of mine, though I had far worse conditions to deal with than you. Basically, me and my family were all loaded up in my 1967 Cessna T337B Turbo Super Skymaster, and we were planning on a rather long flight, so we were pretty heavily fueled up, and somewhat close to max takeoff weight. About 30 minutes into the flight, the rear engine decides it's a good time to seize up. Obviously I call mayday, and immediately turn around, throttling up the front engine almost all the way to compensate for the loss of the rear one. As we neared the runway, I realized that I was still almost 500 pounds overweight, I was significantly overspeeding to avoid stalling, and to top it all off, there was a 7 knot crosswind. Just before we touched down, I shouted for my family to brace for impact, and I'm glad I did, because as soon as we landed, the tire on the left main landing gear blew out, and we went careening off the runway, and onto the grass. As soon as that happened, the tireless left main gear dug in, causing the whole plane to pitch forward and turn, which caused the nose gear to collapse. Somehow we all only got cuts and bruises, though less could be said for my Cessna. That being said, I got her fixed, and she still hauls my family to this day.

I cannot believe coming across this video. I learned to fly at Arve’s flight school, MC Aviation. I got my instrument in N98694 and took my family on vacation in it. Went on to become an instructor and worked for Arve and Emily. That K35 used to have the tail number 666R and I had an engine out @ 800’ AGL after take off while checking out another pilot in it. I later transitioned into a Citation when Arve moved into doing Charter Flights.

Hey Jason, absolutely love the video and everything you do at Rebuild Rescue. I thought I would let you know that the sponsor for this video Kamikoto knives are a scam, they are the worst cheap steel and aren't even made in Japan, in short they are a scam! There is a great RU-vid channel called Shadiversity, the guy who runs it is called Shad and he is a bladed weapons expert, he did a whole video on Kamikoto showing everything wrong with them... Yeah I am one who loves to do the same. I like seeing what's good in something others see as junk and then restoring it. It's an amazing feeling. Then there's guys like that youtube channel whistling diesel that take new or restored things they buy and just tear the crap out of it for youtube views. I absolutely can't stand those guys. My cousin said they bought a restored cub and screwed it all up. I refused to watch it.

@@lovetofly32 I cringe daily at what I see damaged or destroyed on RU-vid. Money or not, if you're going to ruin something you should have a lot of sweat equity in it. I've told my son, a mechanic by profession, I wanted the following on my tombstone: "Wait! Don't throw that away. We might need that." Recently while cleaning out one of my garages I heard my son say the same thing. He's almost thirty, a father and I'm a grandfather. I went over to him, threw my arms around him unexpectedly, and hugged him. Shocked, he looked at me and asked what that was for. I replied, "You finally understand why keeping things you don't need at the moment can be priceless to you later on."

I think you are on the right path with the plane you plan on using for flight school training. Make it look great inside and out, but keep it simple. People going through those flight schools have a lot to learn, so having an easy to learn and operate plane is a huge plus. As far as paint, I'd go with the same paint scheme it has on it now, looks good, but not overpowering....these planes are more a workhorse plane than a looking pretty plane anyways, I'm sure they'll get some dings and scratches due to the type of usage they will have but an easy to do paint scheme will make repairs that much easier, quicker, and cheaper.
@danandkimpage958
@danandkimpage958 Год назад
That airplane is in good shape. Strip it but repaint it in the same colors but a more slim water flowing full length stripes. If this is for students keep the same size tires just in case they have a tire blowout at a different airport. Easy replacement and no downtime. Engine should be O-360 carburetor and keep it fixed pitch. No additional engine controls to add. Interior is easy to do through Airtex airplane interiors. I did mine and looks great. Do overdo the panel. Update it to IFR standards and put in a JPI EDM 900. Great tool. This will be a perfect training airplane.

Someone needs to teach how to get some give-aways like this. I'm a high school teacher, and I started an after school aviation club with 12 kids who can hardly contain their excitement in just talking about airplanes. But I can't get the local FBO/flight school to even answer emails. I would love to be able to get our hands on something that we could make our own, rebuild over the course of several years, learn, and get kids into the air. Half of the students haven't even sat in an airplane, let alone been allowed to fly in one, but... I guess people are giving them away for free? Looking forward to seeing what becomes of these, and continually amazed at what you are able to do with stuff like this. What do you even do for a job? That would be another lesson my students could use, cause I can't make sense of it myself!

For the C172. I wouldn't go too far with the avionic. Say G5, modern radios, VOR/DME just enough for them to do a cross country. Because their next plane may be a cheap steam avionics system. So get them used to the standard instruments, so they have a good basic grounding.

The trick it is not any "one" taking on the task. It is everyone together who make it possible. My grandma used to tell me a saying, when I was so young, "one hand alone can't clap"... Thanks to all that make it possible, each in his and her own way. Some by watching and sharing, some by donating, some by offering equipment, some by volunteering... There are so many ways. It shows us that when hands get together, they do the impossible, possible. Thank you all

Its just the same as people fixing up cars that are too far gone. Usually its people with too much money that do stuff like that. In the case of Rebuild Rescue I think a lot of the costs are absorbed by the various organizations he has, as well as sponsors, and donations. Getting a plane that is able to be repaired like these 2 is only a small fraction of the battle and with the case of these 2 planes being free, that's a major cost savings, even with having to truck them back to his hanger is a heck of a lot cheaper than a new plane by far.

I flew a bonanza with my dad and family from Archerfield to Rockampton (Queensland, Australia) They have an interesting weight and balance issue when fully loaded as fuel drains that causes porpoising, fortunately my dad (PIC) was warned about this, so we were able to deal with it in flight simply by sliding the seats forward... As the back seat passenger during the check flights my job was to hand wind the gear back up after practicing landing gear failures. We returned to Archerfield with 1 less passenger and bags.

As far as cleanup on the surfaces, I would not proceed on paint. Mechanically safe and flyable is all Students require. If it’s donated to a School, they can can take care of appearance after.

Bad news for the Bonanza. Without the ruddervadors the plane is basically just worth whatever the good parts are. Those vadors were magnesium and if they get corrosion of any type they are trash although there is one shop in the country who can do minor crack repairs on them through their FAA Special Repair Process license. There are no replacement skins for them anymore either, they stopped producing them. There is no STC to put aluminum ones on either because alum is too heavy. As far as I know Textron is supposed to start making complete vadors again to the tune of $23,400 per side! Good luck on the search for some!

If you are going to be doing these kinds of aircraft retrievals, you might want to set the trailer up with some cradles for wings and other flight surfaces to reduce the potential damage during transport. Honestly if your goal is to help train new pilots, try to get Garmin on board with a G1000 panel. New pilots are moving to regionals with glass cockpits and pilots need that experience. As far as the pain, why not go with the original paint scheme. That will certainly pay tribute if that was the original owners favorite.

glass cocpit have big shit, old gauges have lot lot better than owerprize glass cocpit shit.

@@mattivirta While steam gauges are great for learning the basics of flying, new pilots being trained for the airlines need glass cockpit experience as the majority of airliners nowadays have glass cockpits. This is why the manufactures have all moved to glass cockpits and automation in their new GA planes.

Get some steel plates and sq.tubing to fit the trailer (similar to what you would use to hold a camper down to the truck)..Plates to extend width of trailer for the landing gear..

Wow them wings came off way easier than the 401 who thinks the 401 is being stubborn 😂. Can’t wait to see what happens with this plan it would be cool to see modern technology inside the airplane and new upholstery and a new paint job and a bigger engine course who doesn’t love more power haha. It will be a cool airplane once it’s done and it’s good your carrying on the legacy. Thanks for taking us along on the Journey take care Edited that was a close on the trailer and is definitely a sketchy one

The 172 wings have those struts (diagonal from bottom of the fuselage to the wing) for support instead of being cantilevered so they don't need to be as solidly mounted. Plus they must simply be a lot lighter!

In fact I think while in the air flying practically the only force on the wing root on the 172 is a horizontal push from the wing into the fuselage and ALL the weight of the fuselage is hanging off the struts.

Helps that they were following the AMM. In no AMM does it say to cut a hole in the wing to remove it.

Flying has gotten so expensive now. I got my private license and about a hundred hours, then had a family and can no longer afford it. It went from renting a 172 for $40/hour wet 17 years ago, to now $120/hr wet. Let’s see, enjoy flying again, or feed the family and pay bills…..would love to fly again someday.

Mud Dauber - it's a kind of wasp. If it's your trailer, you could make a set of removeable deck extensions in say four foot sections for those slightly too wide loads, painted & marked "Wide Load" Simply slide them in to the side tie down points. With four extensions (two for each side) you could just move them along, bringing the end one forward. This would eliminate the need for a deck extension for the whole length of the trailer. Having some frames for wings is also a good idea & if they had padded edges but adjustable faces, they could fit multiple size wings.
