Resealing a Backhoe Hydraulic Stabilizer Cylinder [Dynahoe 160 Part 10] 

As some one who has to rebuild hydraulic and air cylinders as part of his job, you did well. One suggestion to help with getting the new seals on the piston and getting the piston back in the cylinder; get some Loctite LB 8801 or equivalent and some SAE 30 ND oil. Lube it up with the Loctite and then drop some SAE 30 oil ND on it and rub it around coating everything. Then do the cylinder. It'll make install easier, prevent a dry start, and help prolong the life of the seals. All of our powder metal and forging press cylinders, both hydraulic and air, are rebuilt this way. And they see 3-6k psi almost 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. They also make special seal "spoons" for helping get the seals in the cylinder with out them rolling. But I like your method too. You can also use compressed air with a good air nozzle to remove the piston rod. The tractor worked and was much safer than the previous cylinder removal (though less entertaining) but compressed air is *usually* enough to push it out and not launch it. Also a little anti-seize on your caps would be a good idea. It'll help you (or the next owner) in the future.

Ah, the old hose clamp as a ring compressor trick! Excellent! Good to see you used some old material as a buffer so the slots didn't cut the ring.

great video and great work Waldo, if you have a cylinder to do in the future which is a given with old equipment , you can soak the seals and wipers in hot water, just not boiling hot it will make them a little more pliable, the cable tie method worked well, it can also put micro cracks in them, the locknut you removed usually gets replaced, i have reused them to, they are tough to find for older machines and usually charge way too much for them 👍

Enjoy your video's immensely - reminds when I first started out learning how to build and fix things on my own by reading, & working for some pro's who showed me the tricks & how they did it (no Google or even PC's yet) and never enough money to by the tools or all the correct materials I really needed ( lot's of scavenging ) One thing I'm surprise you don't have yet if you're working on old greasy equipment so much is a hot water pressure washer - it would make your life so much easier. I get it though, too many toys, not enough $$, have to prioritize. In time with your hard work & incredible tenacity, that will come about, I'm sure. Tip when you move rubber across metal: put tape on first, because even microscopic cuts will expand to failure under pressure and wear.

When putting those new seals and stuff back in it makes it much easier if you use some lube. Hyd. oil or assembly lube or even dawn soap.

When using the excavator unit make sure the legs are all the way down till they pick the back tires off of the ground to give you more leverage for digging and not moving .

It’s crazy watching you do all this in your backyard. Quick tip is if you can find a beast of a pipe wrench you can crack those endcaps loose and tighten them without having to make a tool, although that tool is a work of art

I know this is months old, but if you can find a service/parts manual for the 160 it will have the part numbers for all the cylinder components as well as the part number for a full rebuild kit. No need to measure anything. Just finished doing this for the front bucket tilt cylinder on a 190. Looked up the part number for the rebuild kit and everything went perfectly. No more drip, drip, dip while the backhoe is running. Total cost for the kit was around $35 shipped i think. Unfortunately, I should have ordered two kits, because the other one is doing the same now that cold weather has arrived. Just found your channel yesterday and you have some great content so far. Keep up the good work! (I had a laugh at the cylinder cap magically appearing at 23:30. I forget stuff like that all the time on reassembly lol.)

Yes, the cap should’ve been much tighter than that. Also if you unhook the hoses the ram more often than not will pull out by hand. The internal seals are always the hardest to get in. The square o-ring as you called it is a backup ring.

You’re going to turn your property into a superfund site. You spill gallons of oil every backhoe episode. Also, you can just use a pipe wrench to disassemble hydraulic cylinders.

Great job. I gotten my share of making hydraulic hoses and resealing cylinders. Milwaukee tools are amazing. I have a stubby 1/2 impact cordless I use at work. Works great use it every day to remove lug nuts. If I get any stubborn fasteners, my 1/2 ingersoll rand cordless does the job

Next time, grease the snot out of those hydraulic seals and it will go in allot easier, won't hurt anything in that old dinosaur... You learned exactly the same way I did, by doing it!! If you ever can't get a piston out of the cylinder, just use the motor and hydraulics, that piston will shoot out of there like a cannon and leave 2 gallons of fluid in your driveway, sometimes they won't come out when the seals roll over inside the cylinder.

Instead of attaching a cheater pipe to a welded piece of leverage, cut you a square hole and stick a 1" breaker bar in there. It's stronger, more efficient, less time consuming and takes up less space when you put it away. Awesome video! LMK if you ever want an apprentice. Moving to Maine next year!

I know its a little late but heres a tip. If you use vaseline on the seals instead of oil the vaseline will make the seal shrink a tad which helps when youre slipping everything back together. Oil makes the seals swell which makes them a little more difficult to slip into place.

Hey Waldo, next time you need a seal kit on the cheap for your backhoe try Fast lift parts. They like $30 a kit, incl shipping. I got few for my later 290 Dyna .There is a parts manual for Dyna 190 in pdf you can download for free and even though a lot of listed kits have different part numbers, essentially they all the same, give or take extra o"rings which are available anywhere, as long as you know your piston and cylinder diameter

I wonder if you have a bypass valve hung up. Seems like the hydraulics can overwhelm the engine, even with some RPM's. Although those detroits have crap power unless running at rated RPM. So I'm not sure. Also the issue with abrupt forward and reverse engagement. Something seems a bit off somewhere, just can't put my finger on it yet.

Apperently the last person that had that backhoe didnt know what they were doing...that outside retaining nut should not have been loose .....which inhand affected the seal with everything floppin around but it should not have been that loose at all ....or they started to fix it and realized it was above their intelligence level

Next time you do a cylinder like this. Put all the seals and back ups in hot water. Makes them go in so Much easier

Waldo never ever pull on a tractor from any point it's higher than your axle. I have had two very close friends of mine killed by tractor flipping over backwards on because they were pulling from above the axle. One of them wasn't pulling anything but a flatbed wagon. And I have seen many many tractors flipped over by pulling from the wrong place.

If you are not opening a valve or cracking the lines open on the cylinder you are creating a vacuum... hence why it is impossible to remove by hand. The only time I can't get the rod and piston out by hand is if the cylinder dented or bent. Otherwise they slide right out. I prefer opening the lines if possible. Gives a guy an opportunity to catch the oil.

Hey man I know you like the metal saws with actual teeth on the blade but man those things would pucker up my rear end up when I did metal fabrication... I know it sounds harder but I've had better luck with right angle grinders
