The OSU-CHS Office of Medical Student Research invited American Indian medical students to take part in a National Institutes of Health grant researching alcoholism in minority populations, especially Native peoples. Dr. Matt Vassar and his team of students share some of their early findings and why it's important. Learn more about the Office of Medical student Research: medicine.okstate.edu/research...

Hello and thank you for this video. I am currently researching alcohol abuse among our Indigenous youth, and I have found that there is not a lot of information that is current. That is what brought me to RU-vid. I am comparing prevention and treatment programs among the tribes of the United States. I have learned that this issue can not be boxed. I have also learned it is impossible to narrow down the scope of research to just the youth. To do that, would not paint a full picture. That really changes everything for my focus.

This is an important and vital group because I have seen my loved ones damaged from alcohol and I've lived through it too and the devastation and trauma it brings and leaves behind is heart breaking and soul robbing. To see good people suffer is something that really bothers me and something I want to end. I wish more people were interested in research of this topic and then creating programing and other resources that will aid my people through this awful struggle and everyone else of of course who is suffering through this disorder. We may not all be on board yet but we've made progress and eventually we can get there together. I commend and I admire anyone who has commited themselves to helping other's live better lives. You all inspire me and others who have big idea's and big dreams to make this world a better place. Love and respect eachother unless they don't deserve it. It may sound like a pipe dream or sound stupid or naive. I know some people believe addicts shouldn't be helped. The problem isn't going to go away on it's own. It's not going to be easy. It's going to be hard and were going to have to work and stick with it. This is not just a Native American problem. People all over the world know the awful truth about some sort of substance addition. I think we need to make changes in our additudes toward the crisis of substance use disorders in order to turn things around for the sake of our fellow man and for the greater good of our society. Substance use disorder should be seen as general health care instead of shaming and judging someone. That's a barrier addicts face when seeking recovery.

Indigenous people have no hereditary exposure to alcohol, most are first generation alcohol users. Europeans have thousands of years for their bodies to develop a "resistance" to alcohol, since our bodies treat it like a disease so european bodies have more of the right chemicals to metabolize & expel alcohol.
