Reservoir Dogs Movie Ending... Explained

Long before he was rewriting history in his inimitable style, Quentin Tarantino (PULP FICTION, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS) was making waves in the world of American independent cinema with his simple and brutal debut, RESERVOIR DOGS. A group of criminals attempt to pull off a diamond heist (which we never see), it goes horribly wrong, and a traitor is suspected. You know the story.
By telling the story in a non-linear fashion, and injecting it with a distinct voice, Tarantino stuck the landing in what many consider to be one of the great first time films from a director. But what there is there to "explain" about the ending of this landmark film? Not all that much on the surface, but instead, there's a few things to "speculate" on, namely the fates of Steve Buscemi's Mr. Pink, Harvey Keitel's Mr. White and Tim Roth's Mr. Orange by the film's bloody, bullet riddled conclusion.

Considering Mr. Orange bled like 3 gallons of blood, was shot twice, and still didn't die, I'm about 90% positive he survived that gunshot to the head and to this day he's still squirming in pain and whining.

Mr. Pink was truly the professional here. *Mr. White:* Fucked up by getting close to Mr. Orange, even telling him his first name and where he's from. *Mr. Blonde:* A complete psychopath who massacres a bunch of people in the diamond store, kidnaps a cop, and tortures him WHILE the city is hot on their tail. *Mr. Brown and Mr. Blue:* As you said, All victims to one bad day. *Mr. Pink:* Not only did he shoot his way out, he took the diamonds and his them, even if it meant if he were to get caught, the cops will have nothing. Also he never mentions where he's from, what's his name. Lastly, during the Mexican standoff he his under the walkway and asked no questions, didn't help White nor Orange, he simply walked out. He was truly the professional, but since he gets arrested, Mr. Pink ain't never gonna see the light of day again.

I always thought it was pretty clear why Orange told White he was cop. I always just assumed that after White defended him so vehemently and even got shot protecting him when he could’ve just walked away he was so consumed with guilt that he owed White the truth. Also, White says “looks like we’re gonna have to do a little time kid” and Orange knew that only White would have to do time so that probably factored in too

Despite not witnessing the actual robbery, only seeing a couple of cops on screen, despite only hearing the police helicopter; Quentin Tarantino did a damn great job making it look convincing that whole LAPD were going on a citywide manhunt looking for the men who's diamond heist became a bloodbath. Just by what the characters say about the robbery, and by listening to the sirens & helicopter, you can only imagine how horrible it went and how crazy Mr. Blonde was murdering people. The series of gunshots at the end makes sense. But I like to think of it this way: Pink got into a shootout with the cops and got away. He never was able to recover the diamonds though, and had to lay low as a waiter at Jack Rabbit Slims. White didn’t shoot orange, survived the shootout with the cops, ended up either serving his time or escaping from prison and became The Wolf. Orange, hit with such guilt, quit the force and became a petty robber as Pumpkin with his girl Hunny Bunny. Jules and Vincent were later sent to recover the briefcase which had the diamonds. That’s why in the coffee shop, when Pumpkin tells Jules to open the briefcase he says "Is that what I think it is?” amazed that the diamonds were still floating around.

After the movie Mr. Pink transfers the diamonds into a briefcase and sells it to Brett, who was going to use it to pay off a debt to Marselles Wallace, leading to the apartment scene in PF. Side note: yes it is implied that Mr Pink gets arrested/killed offscreen at the end. But who knows. Maybe the briefcase was stolen after the police confenscated it, or maybe Pink survived after all and really did become the waiter at Jackrabbit Slims

For me it has always been clear that Mr. White shoots Mr. Orange - because of the first single shot heard, with no movement from Mr. White, followed by multiple gunshots that (presumably) jolt Mr.White out of frame - as stated in this video. The reason some people question this I think is because there is no flash reflected on Mr. White’s face when he shoots Mr. Orange, and people intuitively expect that. Tarantino’s choice to show no gun flash was an artistic one, just as was Mr. White being simply jolted out of frame with no blood - Tarantino probably wanted to create ambiguity before credits in an otherwise explicit film.

I think you missed the reason Mr. Orange decides to tell Mr. White he was a cop at the end. I agree that Mr. Orange came to respect Mr. White throughout their ordeal together, and did not want to lie to him anymore on that account. But importantly, as a result of coming the respect Mr. White so much, Mr. Orange is subjected to extreme guilt. He confessed because the guilt of having bonded so deeply with Mr. White while knowing he was betraying him all along tore Mr. Orange apart.
@whatisbestinlife8112
@whatisbestinlife8112 4 года назад
The nature of White and Orange's relationship is left open to interpretation. There's several little bits here and there that could suggest various things from father/son to even a homoerotic subtext. None more so than at the end when Mr. White is cradling Mr. Orange's head and mumbles "Sorry kid. Looks like we'll have to do it some other time." What they were going to do is left unexplained. Maybe go fishing. Maybe run away together and explore their man love. Joking aside, I'd say their relationship is actually almost a classical one of an older man mentoring a younger, but with a greater level of comradeship and intimacy than just an ordinary workplace kind of relationship. Kind of classical greek even.

I think one of two things happened at the end b/t White & Orange. As mentioned, Orange had been bleeding from a wound for what seemed like several hours. He was so close to death (and he knew it) and wanted to get it off his conscience that he had lied to a guy whom he'd grown to respect. Who'd basically become a mentor to him even though his job was to set him up. Or.....I think b/c Orange had lost so much blood he was confused and light headed and accidentally told White he was a cop. White might be making those grunts and wails b/c he knows Orange has lost so much blood so he can't tell if Orange is being truthful by saying he's a cop or he's so out of it, he is just babbling & doesn't know what he's saying. White is so frustrated b/c he's about to go to jail and may have just killed one of his oldest friends & his friend's son by defending someone who may or may not be a cop. It's tearing him apart.

It was as unique as Kubrick's the Killing - which told of a robbery gone wrong where they all get shot or caught - and to understand what went wrong the films goes back and forth to showing the raid from the view point of each of the robbers. So yeah RD is not a bad film but you cannot argue it was unique.

Mr.Pink miraculously escapes, delivers the case to MarcellasWallace, who in turn , having to send Vincent Vega, and Jules to retrieve that very same case from the doomed Youths in the apartment in Pulp fiction. Notice the bright shine when the case is briefly opened by Vincent. I credit my younger brother who's theory this is. I think it's a semi-reasonable and plausible theory.🤗

Good vid and I went to see the movie three times because I loved it at the time,but with the years that have passed i’ve concluded that White’s defence of Orange was a bit of a stretch as he didn’t know him at all and a hardened crook should have been if not onto him,at least far more cautious as the shooting of Blonde over the cop was a dead giveaway.

I love it too but several things don't make sense. Why would these seasoned career criminals commit a heist while not wearing masks or even gloves. In full view of cameras and witnesses. @rodjohnson6408
@rodjohnson6408 Год назад
Mr White was an idiot who let sentiment blind him to the obvious. Like there's no career criminal who would kill another criminal to save a cop. Anyone in crime long enough will have at least enough of a baseline disdain to outright hatred of police to immediately look at a supposed fellow criminal as a traitor at best once they did take the side of the police. White let his mentor friendship with Orange, and hate for Blonde, along with his inability to admit when he's wrong, get his head so twisted with emotion, that he chose to betray his lifelong friends and colleagues, rather then consider that they may be right to his wrong

Although it does appear that Mr. White killed Mr. Orange with a whooping 99% chance due to the first gunshot, remember that shooting someone in the face or head who is in your laps will definitely get your own face covered by at least a little blood if not a full red face I mean it's Quentin Tarantino you know how much he loves to spray his characters in a bloodbath even if they shoot each other from a few feet That's very logical if you take into consideration Tarantino's style of film making

“Back to the left” was the wrong quote to use to inspire people to analyse ballistics. Since it’s basically an example of BS ballistics. Just because his head went “back and to the left” that doesn’t mean the shot came from the front and to the right. In fact it tells you very little about the position of the shooter. The entry wounds are the important evidence. His head went back for two reasons. 1. The jet effect - when the bullet leaves the head it pulls blood and brain matter out with it at high speed and it spurts out. Newton’s third law. When animals suffer severe brain trauma or beheading, it’s known that all their muscles tense and tighten up at once. Humans have stronger and more muscles in their back than in their front. So if Kennedy was shot from behind (which is what the evidence says) the jet effect coupled with the muscles tensing up explains his movements. Add that to the entry wounds in the back of his head and neck on a trajectory consistent with the 6th floor of the book depository.

@lapensulo4684 4 года назад
Bubba Mike: You are correct, it does look like Mr. White shot twice, so you maybe right. However, there are two things that still do not make sense. One, when a bullet hits a person, the person hit is impacted and Mr. White’s action, after shooting, appears to be in reaction to being hit by a bullet, rather then shooting a second time. Second, it does not appear that the barrel of Mr. White’s pistol is pointing towards Nice Guy Eddy.
@lapensulo4684
@lapensulo4684 4 года назад
Bubba Mike: You are correct Mr. White does shoot twice. Also, I watched the shoot again a few times and it does appear that Nice Guy Eddy is reacting to a bullet coming from his left side as opposed to his right side. Also, it does not appear to be any smoke 💨 coming from under the stairs. So, I think you are correct in that Mr. White shot Nice Guy Eddy, but it still does not appear that he, Mr. White, got his barrel far enough over to hit Nice Guy Eddy and it appears that that second shot was more of an involuntary type shot, and finally I have a difficult time believing that Mr. White could have absorbed the bullet and turned and fired especially when one considers how the other two were simply knocked down, unless Mr. White was not hit in a direct manner as could be the case because he was not killed outright.

Asking to put the gun down doesn't mean they still won't make a move as he continues to sit there with the gun to the undercover cop's face.
