Resident Evil 2 Remake PC Patch Disappoints: Capcom's Ports Simply Aren't Good Enough

Capcom's new patches for Resident Evil 2 Remake, its sequel and Resident Evil 7 received generally favourable reviews from the DF staff in their console iterations. However, Capcom's approach to PC is lacklustre and disappointing. Alex takes a look at the most demanding of the three games - Resident Evil 2 Remake - and comes away shocked and disappointed by an upgrade that, for the most part, is anything but. Why is Capcom treating PC gamers like second-class citizens? If you're not using RT or your GPU doesn't support RT - ie the situation for most users - this is actually a substantial downgrade.
UPDATE: The video incorrectly states at 00:05:07 that you are stuck with SSAO only. To unlock the other AO options you need to ensure the RT switch is set to off, after which the other options will show up.

0:58 To be fair, that is not at all why they made the old version available again. It had nothin to do with issues of the patch or poor port. The outcry was the fact that the patch removed DX11 support and also increased the minimum requirements to even run the game, making a lot of people who bought the game and could play on their low end PCs to be locked out of the game and their PCs no longer being able to meet the minimum requirements.

As a beta branch thing this is really clunky. They should have just done a DX11 build and DX12 build and then the user can choose which DX version the game runs in. Lots of other games do this. And yes, releasing a patch that effectively makes a game unplayable for a portion of your audience is a really poor thing to do.

@@Chris-yc3mm Yes but that would take considerably more effort than just releasing the old build for download. ie: you'd need differing duplicates of assets because the assets are different between versions and in order to avoid file name conflicts, rename the duplicates and then rebuild the game with the new file names... If you always planned to keep the old releases accessible you could have been forward thinking when making the updated version of the game and had the new version use new file names, but that was clearly not the original intent from Capcom, they clearly wanted to replace the existing release. What we got is a lot better than them shrugging at the issues being raised.

Thank God! Finally someone pointed out the antialiasing issue on PC that RE Engine has. I broke down my head trying to fix that flickering in any recent Capcom games like DMC 5 and RE remakes in the past. And now there’s a professional confirmation that antialiasing is simply not working. I hope that after this video Capcom would fix it

Doesn't look good, although I'm kind of biased in this regard whenever I see from soft behavior.. nobody remembers that the original dark souls PC port required a user mod just to run, kind of at all.. and it was never patched despite them releasing two different versions if I recall that both required that patch to run in anything other than 720p 30.. and a little bit more extensive modification just to rebind bsic keybinds... After seeing them genuinely ghost on the resident evil 8 stutter until the privateering blast and DF calling them out I just kind of couldn't help but think they're like a slightly more technically competent version of the same thing... Now granted, I don't think they've done anything as bad as offering you a discount if you bought the broken version of a game that they never patched when they release the HD remaster.. that's a bandai namco from soft special.. at least so far anyways, but then I don't think anybody's ever quite released such a broken game as dark souls on the PC, OR at the very least not since the internet became a common place thing.. certainly not one that wasn't addressed or even even just acknowledged within a certain amount of time. Which you could almost forgive the developers for being confused given that, what was it back in 2013 or something this thing still pulled up 80 plus on the metacritic, as reliable then as it is now LOL... Industry promotional curating content critiques.. I really wish people would stop calling it journalism, it never was.. and it certainly isn't now. So yeah, I got similar vibes of not giving a flying f from Capcom as of the last few years, I was just confusing cuz they seem to be technically competent whereas from soft is about the polar opposite of that, is almost worse maybe? Cuz they know better?

'Simply not working' is an extreme exaggeration. The TAA literally just uses less frames. Which is actually very welcome on PC. PC ports *need* less intense and aggressive TAAs, because the blur and loss of motion clarity strikes a lot harder at a monitor viewing distance.

No DLSS = RT off. As simple as that. Idk who is guilty here, but the transition from DX11 to DX12 has been a torture for the PC community. Very hard to find a DX12 game out there without any issue...

​@@danielweiss4498 Definitely a big part of it. As PC gamers I think we're all burnt out on companies claiming to "shift towards support PC" but constantly deliver lackluster ports. I understand the economics that drive this, but I wish they'd just be honest.

Don't worry about it. They will not bother to correct these issues with the current games, nor will they bother with the future games. It's obvious. This is not something that goes unnoticed during development. I don't know who exactly is to blame here... Whether it's capcom the publisher or capcoms development studio but since capcom launched the games in this state then capcom is to blame.

Thank you for covering the port once again with the new update, I was super hopeful it would enhance the game and remove the blemishes found in the DX11 version but instead it was a big punch in the gut; should've known better knowing capcom with their previous ports but it's still super disappointing all the same.

To be fair, it's much more difficult to port games to the PC because there are so many different types of computers, and you never know what might go wrong on some computers during gameplay. There's no excuse for it, but many things can go wrong when making a PC game. Just ask Five Nights At Freddy's Security Breach. That game was full of game breaking glitches but have been patched.

The RT effects look very good compared to the ssr they had before which was grainy and an eye sore. There however should be an option for the dx11 game.

As a switch owner, i know how it feels to see enemies and objects 5 feet apart from the camera, stutter at like 5 frames per second. It's almost in every switch game. I've grown to detect choppy enemy frames immediately.

Why aren't changes like this completely optional? I thought it was standard to give dx11 and dx12 options if available? Its one thing to screw up a dx12 implementation, but they should have never forced it, or am I missing something?

They updated the engine... and that basically means they'd have to reimplement the old things in a slightly different way to make them work better. They pretty much rushed these updates to release without proper testing and assumed everything would still work the same.

directx 12 gives developers control over things that were before automated on the driver side, e.g. when to compile shaders. so in theory developers can get more out of this and optimize specifically for their needs, but if you dont put the effort in, it can end up worse than what the driver was doing in dx11. this is usually the case in games that support both APIs unfortunately since the games are not built for dx12 and very rarely get optimized well for the new API. so yeah, when both are available, chances are dx11 is still faster, i only trust games that are dx12 from the ground up

The basic gist of it is that DX12 requires more work. But if the work is done right, it has the potential to run a lot better since it gives developers more control over the hardware.

I'm honestly getting so damn tired of publishers/devs pushing graphics first, while nearly disregarding performance. Performance should be focused first, then graphics secondary. I understand why I suppose, it's easier to "sell" graphics, rather than performance, I just strongly disagree with that tactic.

DX12 was shoddy when the games initially released. Doesn't surprise me it is still shoddy. At this point I think developers are just too incompetent when it comes to proper DX12, or hell even Vulkan implementation from what I have seen in a few titles. Stick to DX11 if you aren't going to do it right.

Exactly. Dx12 being released needs competent coding and development to improve performance significantly at a low level hence why big developers like capcom are being caught out. They've gotten away with being lazy and incompetent bastards for too long expecting Dx11 to shore up performance in games. Back in the day when hardware was very limited the best programmers really stood out. Now? They're a waste of salary.

@@ericm.3227 Doom saw an absolutely bonkers performance uplift going from OpenGL to Vulkan and that's roughly equivalent to DX11 to DX12. Same principle, more low level access and less abstractions/automation.

I've also noticed that you have to really look for the VRAM usage this time, it really counts this time and afffect performance. With this I can clearly, HA, see why there's no chance to have a DMCV Special Edition release for PC. 😢

I was waiting for this video, Alex, thank you. I tried this game out again after the patch came out; my initial playthrough of Resi2 Remake was a few years ago on a 1050ti, where I was surprised by how well the game looked and ran considering the age of the GPU even at the time. Big fan of the RE engine's scalability there at that time. Now, trying the game again after the patch and after having upgraded my rig with a 3060ti, I was shocked at how much worse the game runs. It's substantially slower and there's definite compilation stutters with or without RT being on, even though my PC is a good deal more powerful than it was before. The RT is nice but its effects are very subtle unless you have the two versions of the game running side by side, and the performance issues are not subtle at all. It just feels worse to play as a result. And the fact that TAA is completely broken in a lot of RE Engine games makes so much sense, no wonder I've been seeing so much artifacting and jagged edges in Capcom's games recently. It basically makes downscaling a requirement if you want a decently clean picture. Incredibly disappointing, especially considering how good these games generally look on console.

Wow, Alex! I had been using DX12 all along (even prior to the RT update) and suffered wildly inconsistent frame rates as well as weird hitching when entering new areas. Thanks to this video, pointing out the massive discrepancies in performance between the APIs, I am having a much more pleasant experience with the game. Danke Schön!

This is the case with many DX12 games. DX12 has issues with asset streaming if not properly optimized. Battlefield titles and Elden Ring suffer from this too. If you ever have issues with DX12, try DX11 or Vulkan.

DX12 got a bad name by running games slower than DX11 version. I have seen this in several games that runs DX11 and DX12.

First thing I noticed when playing the update, aside from my mods not working, was how blurry everything was. I couldn't figure out why, until I noticed the new upscaling feature was enabled by default. Turning it off made things look normal again, but at a lower fps than the dx11 version. Quite disappointed.

I love how you added in some of the Director's Cut DualShock soundtrack. While some are outright ridiculous, especially the infamous basement theme that everyone loves to use in order to pick on the entire soundtrack, music like "Forest is Dead", "Mansion First Floor/Again", and "The Guardhouse" are one of the better improvements over the original game imo.

They works fine on console, problem is most devs are just using wrapper to wrap their DX11 engine. Most likely because they wanted access to features available in DX12. Unfortunately, these wrapper introduces performance overhead. Game engines need to be natively written for DX12 for it to work as intended.

Man, this TAA issue with Capcom has been going on for a while, I remember playing MHW and TAA seemed to do very little there too, in fact it seemed to soften the image more than actually fix aliasing.

Monster Hunter World has the worst TAA implementation I've ever seen in a modern game. I actually stopped playing it because of that.

Yeah, it just blurs things in motion but then resolves to look almost identical to AA off if static, just a slight change in brightness. TAA+FXAA is like running FXAA with a side offering of temporal smear. Really wish they bothered fixing it or updating the DLSS to 2.0 or higher cause I adore that game (although if Rise's recent implementation is anything to go by maybe it's good they didn't bother).

When using the DLDSR, what smoothing % is being used? The Smoothing amount option in Nvidia beneath the DSR option.

I would appreciate if someone can help me. I've Resident Evil 2 Remake on Steam. The old dx11 version use to run fine but ever since the next gen update, the game blurs whenever I'm moving Leon/Claire. Motion blur is set to off so I don't why it still blurs when moving mouse.

The difference in performance is also between over 40 FPS most of the time, but locked at 30 for consistency in the old version, with my GTX 1050, and quite often being barely able to reach 30 in the new version without FSR or whatever (when before I ran the game at native resolution)

When using DLDSR with the same values shown here on a 4k Display, what DSR Smoothing amount did Alex set it to? The default (33%), or 0% or something else?

Somewhat off topic but did Capcom ever remove Denuvo, or their own DRM, from this game? It could be what's eating so much performance as seen in Resident Evil 8. It's sad that we're back at the point were DRM can negatively effect a game, the first time being the Always Online DRM which would lose your progress if the connection was ever lost even for a second. While not effecting gameplay, they did effect installing, SecureRom and Games For Windows Live made some games hard to run and even harder to run today, you have to go through some hoops to get them to work. :)

I wonder what the issue with the ambient occlusion toggle is. On my PC with a GTX 1070 the HBAO+ setting is there, and Capcom even added a new setting to all 3 games, Fidelity FX CACAO.

This is sad, Capcom did such shabby job, well they do many lazy things like the Devil May Cry HD Collection or the Onimusha "modern port" so honestly I'm not surprised. This is specially sad because RE2 Remake is the best remake they've done and it should've been treated with care and passion.

Had to revert to the DX11 version. Granted, I only have a 2060 but the game becomes unplayable while the unpatched version runs at 60fps with every setting at max.

@Mazzy I guess you could try Interlacing for FSR but I don't remember it improving the FPS that much. The ray tracing doesn't even look that nice in my opinion, nothing compared to a game like Control and that ran great with DLSS

There is a big issue with HDR on Nvidia cards with this patch, where you can't properly configure the brightness (the middle square never disappears), making the game look washed out

As soon as i tried the new version.. i knew many things were off. For starters, i didn't have any visible aliasing before, now i do. 4K, max settings and i can still see many edges... ugh. That alone is a good reason to go back. Not to mention the other reasons.

That was a very in-depth comparison! Now I know that it really isn't worth it for me to update at all. I'm pretty sure that the old version + my own mix of ReShade is the best visual experience. And speaking of TAA (of the old version), What I noticed was that with TAA on, the whole image looked rather blured, which is why I have added a sharpening at the end on my ReShade effects chain. Maybe they added a sharpener themselves to counteract the blured look of TAA? 😅

I'm on a PC from 2011 with no dedicated GPU, but I still love this channel for the in-depth details they go into. Makes me realise just how much effort is needed to optimise a game, and also how Capcom still... well they are Capcom, which is both good and awful. Wish I could play these on PC, but the newest RE title my PC can handle is RE4, the 2007 release with mods of course. Parts where I live cost you half or a whole, sometimes 2 months or more of work, it's not worth it in the end, you'd have no time to play if you work 10 hours a day or more.

there were also some minor gameplay changes that only really affected speedrunners negatively, (weird AI changes and some movement stuff) thankfully the previous patch version is easy to get lol

Where can I find that info? I’ve speedran RE2 probably 35+ times. I would love to know what they changed. Idk if it was just me, but I couldn’t get Mr.X to smash the wall down when playing as Leon. I tried for like 20 minutes just leaving and exiting that special room. That would be a shame if they removed or somehow bugged that moment out.

@@JohnWick-kb5jr from what i know/heard from other people, stairskates downwards are slightly slower, and there are quite a few ai changes like enemies being in slightly different positions in RPD , most people have decided to just downpatch since it's really easy now

@@ppolo12 I'm still waiting for a game + hardware combination where turning on RT really makes sense. HDR is nice, on my TV. Shame there still are so few good options for desktop monitors. But we could've had HDR (and RT eventually, when the hardware made it worthwhile) with DX11 if they hadn't abandoned it to make DX12. :-(

9:15 The reason I love DLDSR. For games with broken AA and games like GTAIV, that have none. lol I'll use 5K DLDSR on my Dell 1440p monitor in GTAIV with my 3080. Not only does it make it GPU bound and eliminate most of the stutters, but it makes Liberty City look so good. Now the swing-set glitch isn't the only good thing in the game. lol And I love your DLDSR and FSR use. I've thought about this before. It's like putting sunglasses over your headlights. HA

I use this trick in games that have DLSS. With my native res at 1440p I use DLDSR with DLSS performance or balanced to get end up with around the rendered pixels count but significantly improved IQ

With DLSS, absolutely as it produces a near perfect image. With FSR 1.0, hell no. Idk what Alex was thinking recommending it here as the end result looks almost objectively worse than simple native 4k, but I guess he was only focusing on RT which is slightly improved due to the higher internal resolution. Still not worth it using it with FSR 9,5 times out of 10. But as Capcom continues to pander to AMD with console parity, we can kiss DLSS goodbye.

Huh? You can't use DLDSR for 5K on a 1440p monitor. DLDSR is only available for 1.78x and 2.25x resolution factors. And if your game is stuttering from being CPU bound, you should just set a lower frame rate cap. DLDSR is pretty cool, but it also seems to apply some form of sharpening. Setting the DSR smoothness to 0% with DLDSR looks oversharpened and I need to turn it up to ~33% to look good. With DSR I just set it to 4x and 0% smoothness, so I get all the detail without oversharpening or blurring.

Besides the graphical and performance issues, I'm also disappointed that the developers didn't give us an option to disable vignette and chromatic aberration. Plus there is still mouse deadzone, as there is no proper raw input.

Another great video from Alex! One FRIENDLY audio nitpick: sibilance. I'm all for a crispy vocal, but I worry Alex's videos have a little too much sizzle. spicy! fwiw, it is most distracting on my Samsung TV, but it is immediately noticeable when these videos play after other videos with less sizzle on any device. this is not a bash! i admit that i'm maybe more sensitive to this than most, so please do take this as some constructive feedback to make Alex's great videos even better!!

I've also heard speedrunners complain about very specific enemy AIs being broken in certain modes and situations. Incredible what can go wrong with a simple engine update.

Yeah I noticed performance was waaay worse on the update vs benchmarks I've seen from other people with a similar setup to mine. Looked into it and realized the patch made the game just generally perform way worse even without RT on.

Hey ALex I am getting MASSIVE slowdowns in re2 remake rt after changing settings. And if I change too much, I will crash. The game is also underperforming and stuttering a bit. Especialyl if I change settings and play. That is on 3080 at 4k

the ultimate part has nothing to do with it - it's the part of DX12 that is a double-edged sword that is the problem for devs who are 'lazy' - you can get better performance on the same hardware but you have to work for it, and if you don't do that work, you will have worse performance than DX11. Devs have only themselves to blame, not some newer version of an API that has been out for years and arleady made clear the issue.

I feel there is a lot to be gained from a FSR/DLSS for RT effects specifically, so ti can run at lower res making performance not so bad, but then reconstructing it up so it looks good enough

I though it was only me seeing eyebrows with big artifact when I was playing the demo and I turned the camera on first location to see my character face. I though my nvidia graphic card is damaged (2070 Super). So it's the problem of the game? I tested the image on my monitor and on my phone by searching same photo made by community on steam and to check on both devices the look of eyebrows of that photograph. The result was that on pc was very visible (eyebrows had white pixels on them / similar to dandruff (idk if term is correct) and on my phone it was barely visible that white artifact on those eyebrows). Can someone confirm if he has the same problem as me? I hope I have described my problem clearly. I see in this video a lot of problems related to anti-aliasing. So that was kinda my problem too.

TAA seems to have been patched in re2 last week! Although RT performance is terrible. On 3080, it goes as low as 30-40fps maxed out at 4k. And yes. HBAO+ was also patched into rt version And it seems to have memory leak as it gets very slow after changing some options or just even crashes

Thank god for this video, i said on steam that re2 and 3 are now broken with graphic settings and the amount of trolls coming out of the woodwork was crazy, people that say nowt wrong, works perfectly on my rtx3090 blah blah blah, so many just dont like to admit when games on pc are worse than console, hope they fix these games properly but tbh i doubt it

I’ve been replaying it on Series X and I have to admit, other than the RTGI and specific moments at the main room of the precinct when Screen Space Reflections looked terrible, it’s hard to spot a difference. Even RTGI only makes a difference to me because I’m actively looking for it 😅

Not only does Monster Hunter: Rise have broken TAA that does nothing, you can't use DSR/DLDSR to fix it, because the game will flat-out refuse to let you set any resolution higher than the native display resolution. If you trick the game into running in a DSR/DLDSR resolution, it will still render at the native panel res and just stretch the image to the higher DSR/DLDSR resolution, defeating the purpose.

Are you sure? Have you tried changing the desktop resolution to the DLDSR res before launching the game? I don't have Monster Hunter but I've run into that problem in other games and got around it doing that.

Yes. I tried it this morning. 3440x1440 monitor. DLSR to 1.78x, set desktop res to DLDSR res and launch the game. Result: game runs at 1920x1200 (what? Why?) and treats that as the max res you can set. I tried tricking the game by changing the screen res after launching and that just resulted in the game poorly stretching the image to the higher res. The game does not support full screen, only borderless windowed. That may have something to do with it.

@@aweigh1010 what makes you think I'm mad? You're the one getting worked up over someone else's opinion on random graphical tech. Not that you care to understand my opinion, but the reason I don't mind jaggies is that on high end and future hardware you can go back to older games and supersample them for absolutely perfect anti aliasing. You can't do that anymore, there's no way to fix a bad TAA Implementation with ghosting everywhere. Artifacts are bad, and usually avoidable with some tuning. I don't care if it's caused by bad TAA, SSR with bad cubemaps, overreliance on SSAO, low shadow biases, or whatever. The effects themselves are fine, but if used improperly look terrible. I just want the OPTION for a clean image I can clean up however I want with supersampling or basic reshade aa. The fact that offends you is quite peculiar.

So yeah, ghosting there is technically correct thing for TAA as it's "told" it's a static surface. It's mostly an edge case that lends itself to be used as an example, not something that's representative of majority of rendering the game does where TAA has mostly correct info where to invalidate previous frames.

I noticed the RE2 Remake sharpening the very second i started playing the game walking around, im surprised you didn't notice it earlier Alex, it's quite agressive, maybe its because i was playing in a resolution below 1080P , but the TAA or FXAA is the only thing that was capable of smoothing out some of that horrid sharpening, im glad that there's a tool to remove it now, maybe i'll re-download.

im getting a lot of stuttering with the new patch on many moments with a i5 12600kf + rtx 3070 bc the game decide to dont use the gpu at all, with a cpu and gpu usage at 20% or something like that And i got that trying all posibles graf configs, nothing resolve it (at 1440p at least)

What do you guys think about the inaccessible sharpening effect in games? Nowdays too many games have this problem from different studions with different engines. Games like Battlefield1, Gravel, Century Age of Ashes, Marvel Avengers. Why is this? Are they just lazy? They never test their games with any different setting than TAA? Or there could be a logical explanation to this?
