Resident Evil 2: Wonderful Game, Wasted Remake

Resident Evil 2 2019 is a wonderful game that recaptures the survival horror gameplay of the classics. But as a remake, it fails to recreate and improve on the original in many different ways. Yet it doesn't do enough to separate itself as a full reimagining either.

Just a correction: the composer of this game is NOT the original, he was an assistant in the original. The original main composer was Masami Ueda, who also worked in RE1 and RE3 and left Capcom along with Shinji Mikami after they ported RE4 to the PS2.

Why is Capcom so obsessed with realism when making this game? I don’t think realism really matters that much in a series where Chris Redfield punches a giant boulder and Leon S. Kennedy breaks the laws of physics to dodge lasers.

RE Village also proves how absurd that rationale for RE2 Remake is, by not only offering a more massive variety of enemies and bosses (built from the ground up in the RE Engine, without a prior game to directly copy), but also adding monsters and set-pieces far more fantastical than a big alligator, killer plants, etc.

@@yaboytroy357 Even so, that sense of contrast could just as easily be present, without the creators needing to show an apparent disdain for the original RE2’s monster variety. Ill never understand why they decided to have Claire and Leon basically never interact with each throughout the game. It made sense in Re1 because the mansion and the story felt like a character in and of itself and the isolation only added to the survival horror aspect, here it seems like a perfect opportunity to add more character interaction. The police station and story just arent enough to make up for such sparse character interactions. Just feels kind of empty. Imagine actually interacting with other police officers in the station, citizens who come to the station because its an obvious symbol of safety for the city, or even just going through more of the station with Claire. Such wasted potential imo.

Oh yeah let's just chill here and pretend like there's no zombie apocalypse happening around us, just the two of us blushing and smiling under the rain. Seeing that, I don't want to see more interaction between them. At least the OG was very relevant and they went straight to the point and objectives. Talk about Chris's whereabout, then what's the next plan and objectives. 1) Get out of here 2) Help survivors along the way 3) Update each other on the walkie. It was quick and relevant. We didn't have to suffer on meaningless interactions of remake re2.

I actually was freaked out most by Kendo's death in the originals, because it kind of set up a theme of if you're not careful (standing next to a glass window in full view of the street like a rotisserie chicken), you can and will get nommed. I was looking forward to watching that moment in the remakes, because it was to me the scariest and most unfortunate death. At the same time though, I do like that Kendo is now deeply destroyed over his daughter, so I'm okay with that element to him. Still though, would have been freaked (and pleased) to see a similar scenario in the remakes. Closest thing I can think of is that poor officer who had his legs nommed off, but we didn't get to see him get dogpiled on or taken completely by surprise by a rather avoidable situation which is what made that moment for me in the Originals. Also the fact that Brad was a hidden boss! Foreshadowing at its finest!

I must say that I 100% agree with your points, even though I enjoyed REmake 2 a lot as a game I felt somewhat disappointed with all the wasted potential and changes (specifically how A/B scenarios were handeled and the zapping system being cutted and the lack of enemy variety compared to the original). As you said the REmake from 2002 already set the standard for the remakes of those classic games (I also prefer the variety that FC adds to the general presentation and atmosphere, which doesn't mean that I don't enjoy OTS, but I would have prefered FC for this one as well as for the R3make). I'm curious if you will cover the case of R3make (because unfortunately that game just double downs all the negatives that this one had as a remake, it'll probably be a fun game, but as a remake, and particularily of RE3, one of my favorite entries in the series, it's a complete disappointment).
@SeventhheavenDK
@SeventhheavenDK 3 года назад
Exactly, I enjoyed and even liked RE3R, as its own game is decent, but as a Remake is just terrible. Also I am so pissed they took away what I liked more from the originals. In RE2R the A/B scenarios and how they coexist with one another, including the effects one game had in the other (as little as they were). In RE3R the Clock Tower and Jill revisiting the Police Station.

Great movie pretty much summing up my exact thoughts on the game! A simple idea I had for the zapping system was have the side packs you picked up for the A character be gone for the B character. You can go from 8 to 20 slots on Standard Mode, which really defeats the purpose of inventory management that the original RE2 had. This way, you could try to get 3 for each character, or maybe give the A character 2 and the B character 4 so they could carry more on the harder playthrough.

"Jill, ladies first" "Jill, can I have my moment" killed me 😂 I really wish Capcom added in the A/B scenario more prominent. Like Leon should still enter one way and Claire from another a little while later. Both are in the RPD together but can't meet due to things in the way so they can still interact and deepen their relationship so it doesn't feel forced at the end. This can also play into how we have to leave things behind for the other when the other finally gets through to the other side of the RPD. Leon's part should be focusing on getting the medallions and entering nest through there while Claire has to find a way inside from another side and figure out how to reach the other parts of the RPD where Leon is and finish the puzzles and enter the nest through the street where we could also explore them like in re3 maybe even parts where re3r cut like the park. That way we arent nust replaying the same tbing for each character. maybe vice versa. Idk...the AB in the remake was a wasted potential.

1:56:00 - One thing that the game really could stand to do better is make it clear that Birkin's final form is actually invincible until he reveals his massive central maw-eye. While I do prefer 360° movement in general, I do agree with bringing tank controls back since it has its own advantages. For example, if the developers wanted to experiment with cinematic camera angles to give it a movie-like experience, the tank setup is usually the better option as it prevents gameplay disrupting issues from occurring. No matter how crazy the camera can get, as long as you're holding forward, you will always be moving forward. They can also allow for more precise gameplay. I've been playing a good chunk of the old Tomb Raider games and I really admire the sense of precision and satisfaction it offers after getting used to how it all works. Tomb Raider 3 in particular is one of the best controlling games of the 5th Gen due to how smooth, precise, responsive and natural it feels to play, which is one of the reasons why it's one of my favourite PS1 games. I understand why the control scheme has its detractors as there was a time I couldn't get to grips with them, but playing games like Resident Evil 2 and Tomb Raider 3 made me realise that this control scheme has potential to be relevant again. What if there was a game where the D-pad can be used for the tank setup and the analog stick can still be for 360° movement? You would get the best of both worlds.

Regarding enemy variety, not only did the original introduce more enemies as a way to keep things fresh, it also perfectly encapsulated how f*cked Raccoon City was. The Chinese Manhua illustrated how the RPD planned on escaping through the sewers. While they didn't make it down there, they would have been dead regardless because as we discovered the T-Spiders had already nested there and any civilian or officer would be doomed. The evolved Lickers shows that even the most disgusting creature could get EVEN worse. The Moth too, shows how far gone even the laboratory was. Nothing was safe. The rainfall in RE2make REALLY took away from Raccoon's atmosphere too. It's f*cking EERIE traveling the streets in RE2 and RE3 because the howling wind and zombie moans fill every second of play. I prefer the originals of RE2 and RE3 to their remakes/reimaginings. But that's not from a nostalgia perspective. My older brother had the original RE2 and while I had played it...I never got much further past the first Licker because the game scared me as a kid. Then came my birthday last year and I got the RE2 remake. I'm in my 30s now, and the RE2 remake...also scared me a lot. (I'm not that great with horror.) Luckily, I came across my brother's copy of the original and pulled out the PS2. In order to build up my horror tolerance, I went back and forth between the original and remake. I wound up beating all 4 scenarios for the original before finishing up even one of the campaigns in the remake. The original surprised me with just how different the A and B scenarios were. I could see why it was such an important game. Then came the remake. And I have to agree that the lack of the zapping system, areas, and the story presentation just hurt the remake. It's a fun game for sure. But it's missing what made the original special. I got a lot of the same feelings towards the RE3 remake. But we didn't have that game, so I searched around and got the Gamecube port. And I enjoyed that quite a bit, and was eager to see things like the Dead Factory and Clock Tower in the new version...course, those were removed. Same with a lot of the randomness that the original had which made repeat playthroughs interesting. Again, it was a fun game and quite enjoyable. But it was missing something. Basically, I find myself repeating the same issues that Ruby has with the remakes of RE2 and RE3. But these are from fresh eyes. I vaguely remember RE1 and RE2 from back then, but I had never completed them. This year I played a ton of RE, revisiting the original trilogy and all of their remakes, along with playing through RE7. It's been a fun experience. But for all the pretty bells and whistles of the RE2 and RE3 remakes...I'll stick with source material. Though it's a tossup for RE1 because I love the cheesy acting of the PS1 version.

52:00 - Yeah... I think the biggest reason that RE7, RE2make and RE3make fell through for me was this obsession with "realism" in a game series that had built itself around B-movie action/horror hybrid. I mean, I approved of the less narmy dialogue that the RE1make was scripted with in 2002, but Resident Evil is not a realistic series. You want your realism in zombie apocalypse, go play The Walking Dead. Resident Evil is where 80s bio-horror meets 80s action movie badassery in a delicious stew that remains unique to this day. Far too many things were cut from the RE2make in the name of "realism", and it makes me want to scream.

However, what we expect an RE to be like shaped over the years and unfortunately they went for an anime like thing, starting with RE0 and Code Veronica. The original 3 games allow for realistic remakes and I'm glad they're going that direction. I like RE, but boy has every game after the original three titles and REMAKE been a letdown.

Let make me just be brutally honest about RE2 Reimagined. As much as i enjoyed playing it, more so going as far to say that RE2 brought the survival horror back to it's healthy form as well as reviving Resident Evil franchise (played RE7 and yea the game was great). But there is something about the original RE2 that made it stood out more than the reimagined version. You see, almost all most of the areas in the reimagined RE2 had succumbed to darkness and are barely lit. I understand that it was supposed make encounters with enemies scarier and helped to add in immersion AT SOME SEGMENTS, however the issue here is that the game overused that formula. Although i do find the dark areas terryfing at first, i just lost slightest bit of motivation to finish the game when i started to reach the sewers and especially the lab because of how they overused dark areas to make up for the scare factor. I got slightly bored as soon as i reached the lab only to be greeted with dark rooms. But i digressed. Remember i still had fun moment with the game and definately i had moments when i was scared. Compare to RE2 original, most of the areas are not obscured by darkness and instead are perfectly lit. The use of strong light sources allows exposure to every surface that are near it, thus making it an awesomely horryfying sight for the eyes. Which also the RE2 reimagined seemed to have issues with, there were only barely lit light sources around dark areas and only show some dull colours on surfaces that are in close proximity with the light sources, thus adding it in one of the factors that brought me into subtle boredom. The graphics that this game have is phenomenal they should have NOT overused dark areas for the scsre factor. All in all, i still played RE2 reimagined for what it is although the original version managed hold the candle longer than the reimagined version. UPDATE: Boys, our luck is about to change cause i had visited a website that contained a mod for the lighting effect. It was made this year too, there were also images showing the game with lightning mod and wow it looked INFINITELY better.

But shooting head once, kick, repeat for a thousand times makes it tiring by the end of the castle and the island, everyone feels burned out by that point because of that. I'd say the rng makes the combat better, since if you don't get the stagger you have to quickly come up with a plan whether it's a flash grenade, a hand grenade or a shotgun to keep distance.

There's always my HL2 / Source mod remake of RE2 (Resident Evil 2: Source), which while being in first person and still being technically unfinished (nobody wants to help, and I can't code or do complex models), and being janky and placeholder-y in areas (Full Leon A Scenario, it's beatable)... It's still more faithful than REmake 2. Darkside Chronicles is also a better (or at least, more faithful) REmake 2 than REmake 2. And when somebody considers DC being a more faithful REmake 2 than REmake 2, despite it being a linear rail shooter that cut corners like it was on a nuclear diet. (They seriously could have just made the rail shooters like RE Survivor, where you can move around and explore at your own pace, but yknow, actually good) You don f***ed something up. There's also that Rod Lima UE3 remake, which is a bit jank at times, but otherwise good. But of course he'll never release that, because herp-a-derp fan project for [insert five million quotation marks]"""experience""" and afraid of takedown by Crapcom. I can't believe the composer for REmake 2 is actually the composer for OG RE2, he's either lost his f***ing mind, or the real guy got kidnapped and replaced with a lizard. Senile old f***. Same s*** for why they threw out those cool looking proto huds in favor for soulless, colorless HUD/inventory. The EKG was a nice touch, but the rest of the hud/inventory is just generic trash.

You had me up to the end when you talked about how great the tank controls were. I tried to play the RE1 remake and died to the first zombie 3 times because I just can't grasp the controls, and the camera changes keep confusing me. I know I'm bad at games, but I can't be expected as a consumer to "get it" when literally every other game I've played is either 1st person or 3rd person shoulder. I was left thinking "how the fuck do I strafe around this zombie? I don't wanna waste my ammo on it, I'm sure there are harder enemies later I'll use the ammo on" I'll probably return to the RE1 remake to play it later. But rn I just wanna play I game and enjoy it off the bat. I don't have time to understand the controls with other things in my life. Im sure it's great if your used to it, but If I have an hour of freetime to play a game, I don't want to spend it being frustrated.

Your individual unwillingness learn how a game works just because you're unfamiliar with the type of game it is has nothing to do with anything. Re2make was the first RE game I ever played, and I loved it so much! But even as a person going in blind, I questioned some of the things you brought up. I kept asking where Claire was and hoping she'd show up as I played Leon. And then when I did a second run as Claire, to see what she had been up to, I was sad to see the doors I unlocked as Leon, the can only be unlocked as Leon, were still locked. I still love the game, I will always love the game, because it was my first proper RE experience, but after hearing more about the original re2, I'm just so sad that it's not what could have been. For such a character driven story, it would have been nice to have our two leads interact more. And as someone who loves choice based games, having things affect the second run would have been so cool.

For me, Resident Evil 6 and Revelations 1 and 2 were the last games, Resident Evil 6 may have been anything but a survival horror game, but it tried to pay respect to the classic games and you could see that. It was the conclusion of Chris', Leon's and Ada's stories, of the original characters, with many references to their previous games, and the same goes for Revelations 1 and 2, being the conclusions for Jill, Claire and Barry, with again, many references to the original games. Now the series has been essentially rebooted as streamlined horror games for the new hardcór gaymers bcuz oh the old ones are ugly and unrealistic!!! I've just honestly given up on the series.

@Leotis Bennett In my personal "onion", at least, the remake definitely made other improvements which I have been wanting since I played the original, besides just giving modern graphics. *However,* I agree with almost everyone else that the remake created many of its own downgrades too. If I were to sum up my feelings on the original versus remake below... *Things Which the Original Did Better For Me:* 1.) The the A and B scenarios share a set of events that have actual narrative continuity, unlike most of First Run and Second Run in remake. 2.) Far greater variety of alternate plot points, based on whether you played in the order of Leon/Claire versus Claire/Leon. 3.) A default set of soundtracks that actually feels finished, plus the music for the main hall and save rooms can "amazingly" loop. 4.) Greater quantity of enemy types (the remake cuts numerous enemies, while the only enemies it adds are Pale Heads and regular zombies buffed/equipped with armor/poison/explosives/packs, both of which are pretty much exclusive to Ghost Survivors anyway and not even part of the main campaign). 5.) The laboratory's explorable area is bigger from what I recall (whereas numerous bits in the remake's lab are either absent like the moth rooms or relegated to appearing briefly during the self-destruct gauntlets like the security camera room). 6.) The inclusion of a zapping system for certain mechanics. 7.) All of its alternate costumes are unlockable, while the remake paywalls some of its costumes. *Things Which the Remake Did Better For Me:* 1.) An overall more fleshed out variety of weapons (like more prominent flamethrower/spark-shot, inclusion of RE1 Remake-style defense weapons, more depth to gun variations/upgrading, and a simple gunpowder crafting system). 2.) The quality of enemies retained (the zombies, zombie dogs, Lickers, repurposed G-Spawn, and redesigned Ivies gave me a greater variety of challenges, fit the combat style well, and encouraged me to actually use different weapons for different monsters). 3.) All of the encounters/battles with Mr. X and William Birkin (although the alligator was unfortunately put in as an afterthought, and I felt the lack of improvement in that one boss shows). 4.) More differentiated scenarios involving Ada Wong and Sherry Birkin. 5.) The RPD and sewers felt like they got an ideal RE1 Remake-style expansion/rearrangement, plus I liked the added orphanage area. 6.) The controls and inventory mechanics getting some upgrades like the instant 180-degree turn found in RE3 onwards, an ability to instantly combine items, hip pouches having a more fleshed out role, and the map having conveniences borrowed from the RE1 Remake. 7.) The addition of models, concept art, and challenges to the variety of bonus content. *I have not played the bonus modes in either version extensively enough to judge for myself, whether I appreciate the Old HUNK/Tofu and Extreme Battle modes versus the New HUNK/Tofu and Ghost Survivors modes more.*

@Robert Ito To be fair, Remake wasn’t perfect, particularly with Barry’s story. In Remake it is way too obvious that he is a traitor and that hurts the intrigue and makes Jill seem dumb. At the part where they fight Lisa together, Barry even lets it slip that he was being coerced to mess with Jill. Then the fight ends and Jill doesn’t even acknowledge that Barry pulled a gun on her. It is a glaring plot error. IMO Chris’ scenario is completely improved but Jill’s has problems with the plot not present in the original. Still miles better than the newest remakes though.

Also, what do you mean Marvin's interaction with Leon is better in the remake? The literal same exchange happens, however OG actually makes it less melodramatic. Marvin points his gun at Leon, tells him to go and then locks the door to the room he was in. He knew he was fucked, didn't need to scream at the wind just to get a reaction out of the player. @markcobuzzi826
@markcobuzzi826 2 года назад
@@covfefewithextracream5569 Generally speaking, people will call something as a “remaster”, if it is primarily made from recycled assets that got polished/modified. One example could be when a movie gets rereleased in Blu Ray quality vs. DVD quality. Another could be when the Star Wars special editions came out, with polished image quality and some previously cut footage being put back in, among other changes. When the creators are pretty much starting over from scratch and rebuilding everything from the ground up, that is usually when people call it a “remake”. For example, Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong was its own new production, from start to finish, and was not made by simply recycling footage, audio, props, etc. used to make the original 1933 version. Now, remakes can range from being so similar to the original product that people call it a “shot-for-shot remake”, to being so different that it overlaps with what people may call a “reimagining”. When a new version of RE1 was made for the GameCube in 2002, that was remake built from scratch. Later on, the 2002 version’s assets were recycled and polished in 2015 to create “Resident Evil Remastered”. Basically, the 2015 version of RE1 was a remaster of a remake. So if the title was being more technical and fully informative, it would probably say “Resident Evil Remake Remastered”.

@@AndrewSF8898 One thing to point out in RE1's favor, however, is that both of its campaigns were at least coherent and self-contained, within the context of their own parallel universes. But for the RE2 Remake, all four of its scenarios are both too incomplete to work as self-contained stories in their own timelines (like in original RE1 and its remake), yet also too repetitive and contradictory to act as puzzle pieces to a bigger narrative (like in original RE2). Cases in point below... When you picked either Chris or Jill, you defeated all of the bosses as one character (including the final one right from the get-go), you could explore all of the rooms as one character, Barry/Rebecca do not appear at all in the opposite campaign (so there are no loose ends involving them), your main partner gets locked in a cell until the end (implying that not much happened with them offscreen), plus all of Chris and Jill's story bits can happen in one playthrough. Therefore, the Chris and Jill campaigns were both all-encompassing enough to actually feel like alternate variations of the whole story, rather than separate fragments of a bigger narrative that somehow need to interlock. With the RE2 Remake, however, it is impossible to see all beginning parts in one playthrough (ie: entering the convenience store, going through the RPD's front entrance versus side entrance, meeting Marvin, and seeing Mr. X early on the computer screen), you cannot explore all sections of the game as one character, the final boss fight with G5 and ending cutscene are withheld in First Run, Leon Kennedy's Second Run has him fighting G3 and then going right to G5 (implying that someone had to fight G4 offscreen, yet Claire's campaign feels the need to show Mr. X getting killed early, as though the opposite characters's penultimate boss should not be happening offscreen), plus Leon Kennedy meets Sherry Birkin with Claire Redfield (implying that an important subplot happened offscreen and needs to be explored).

I'm still thinking about how cool it would have been if in the RE2Make the Leon A/Claire B non canon scenarios had you meeting Ada as Claire and meeting Sherry as Leon. Claire having to put aside her obvious distrust of Ada to work together with her and survive, and Leon having to take care of and look after Sherry on his first day as a cop. Claire could also meet up with Ben and fight Mr. X for her finale, while Leon could’ve confronted Chief Irons and faced off with Birkin at the end. What a wasted opportunity to actually reimagine the story and character interactions of the original. I still loved RE2Make for it's gameplay, level design, and visuals, I just feel as if more could've been done to add onto and improve it. Edit: For all the people commenting about how it would break canon, did you guys forget this is Resident Evil we're talking about? They already retcon stuff all the time in this series. RE0 changed Rebecca's back story and the cause of the outbreak at the mansion, RE1 doesn't even have a canon route, it's like a mix of the two or something, and RE2 already has two non canon routes. Like a comment below said too, just put this new story in the Leon A/Claire B scenarios, the scenarios that are already non canon by the way, and keep Claire A/Leon B the same story as it is now. And If this still a big problem to some people for some reason, then why not just make it like RE1 where the canon is that events from both happened and are combined, then it doesn't matter which routes people played because both are canon to a degree. Or, just make Leon A/Claire B require you to first beat Claire A/Leon B to unlock, that way you would have to experience the vanilla "canon" story first before being able to play the non canon Leon A/Claire B. Resident Evil was never a narrative heavy series to begin with. RE4 and RE7 had barely anything to do with the story of the series, and people didn't seem to care much. In fact those are some of the highest rated games in the franchise. Aren't they just gonna continue making remakes of the older games anyway? I think the original story of those classic Resident Evils is already another timeline at this point because the remakes still changed a lot of the story. Is anyone playing the new Resident Evil really gonna be at a loss if the story of this game has two non canon routes? So please tell me what games in the series would have unintelligible stories because of two non canon routes in a remake of a game that already had two non canon routes.

At the very least, I feel that the G2/G3 and G4/Super Tyrant fights should have respectively been attached to First/Second Runs instead, with a few cutscenes being altered accordingly. Reducing the severity in which Mr. X gets mauled by Birkin in that one Claire cutscene could also patch the remaining plot holes suggested. That way, the alternate scenarios could more coherently play out like this at one point... *Leon -> Claire* After Claire defeats G3 with Annette’s help, Claire sees Annette fall over apparently close to death. She tells Claire to leave her and give Sherry the G-Virus vaccine. When Claire gives Sherry the vaccine and gets ready to escort her, Mr. X comes crashing down in between them. He pursues Sherry to salvage the G-Virus sample she carried with her. Claire distracts Mr. X by presenting Sherry’s locket and lures the Tyrant away, while Sherry can run away in the opposite direction. While fleeing from Mr. X, Claire calls Leon and tells him to go pick up Sherry. From then on, Mr. X gets caught in the fiery explosion and fights Claire as a Super Tyrant. Meanwhile, Leon has his confrontation with Ada Wong. Ada then gets shot by Annette, who still had that last bit of resolve left and is accompanied by Sherry. After seeing both Ada falling and Annette collapsing, Leon can only go up to Sherry and promise to get her out alive, no matter what. From then on, Leon escorts Sherry and has to battle G4 with the Gatling gun. Later on, Ada is confirmed to still be alive, when Claire gets a rocket launcher from her. *Claire -> Leon* Pretty much plays out like the Claire and Leon scenarios we do get in the actual remake. But this time, Ada Wong will confront Leon on the path where Mr. X appears. When the Tyrant attacks the pair, Ada manages to shoot the Tyrant’s face and make it stumble back into a fiery explosion, but not before getting slammed against a wall. The wounded Ada tells Leon that the place is about to blow and he has to get out of here. Leon reluctantly goes on ahead, but then fights the Super Tyrant and hears Ada dropping the rocket launcher for him. Also, in Leon’s cutscene after beating G3, Annette will still have enough vitality left to part ways with Leon. It is implied that is how she meets up with Claire and Sherry in their own small room, during Claire’s First Run, before dying.

One part in particular they could have really sold the "zapping" mechanic would have been in the weapons locker room where the keypad was missing two keys. The easy solution would have been to only give one key to the first character to force the player to choose which items to get, then let the second character have the second missing key to unlock the remaining lockers and get what the first character had to leave behind. Instead both characters get both keys, which makes no sense as that would mean the first character would have had to remove the keys and re-hide them for the second character to find. Not exactly a move someone trying to work with the other person to survive would do, unless there was an unseen third character running around and resetting all of the puzzles and rebuilding set pieces like those that get wrecked in the Birkin encounters. They could have had it all easily explained as the second character was running a few minutes behind the first character and changed up some of the puzzles and key item locations to reflect this, and it seemed like they were going to do that as both characters do have access to certain key items the other doesn't, but those differences didn't amount to much in the end except access to some slightly different rooms that turned out to be optional.
@resurrectionevil6581
@resurrectionevil6581 4 года назад
I agree. I think that's my main irk with the remake. They could have expanded so much with the A/B scenario. Added monsters and the importance of leaving resources behind for each other. And of course expanding on their relationship. The remake relationship with Leon and Claire made no sense, they met once and were like BFFs by the end? What? And it retcons Leon and Sherry's relationship in future installments. They should have split up the RPD where Leon and Claire were restricted to some areas so they can still interact but couldn't meet. And would have to enter the nest at two different locations.
@markcobuzzi826
@markcobuzzi826 4 года назад
These were the seven ideas I came up with, for how the remake could have still included a zapping system, while keeping its other gameplay changes intact, if anyone would like to read through them below... *1.) Obviously have the Marvin zombie be either alive or already dead.* On top of that, the RE2 Remake could have also had Second Run remember the exact location of Marvin's corpse if you did kill him in First Run. *2.) If Second Run began from the same save file as your finished First Run, rather than being started from scratch, then it also could have been relatively simple to add an equivalent to the B4F Culture Experiment Room.* Once your ID wristband reaches a certain level, then you could have Leon and Claire log in their fingerprints, both of which can be needed to open up a separate item room during Second Run. *3.) Instead of the SMG and hip pouch, I was thinking that you could open up a compartment of Chris' desk, which contains his lighter and S.T.A.R.S. knife, the exact same ones he used in RE1 Remake.* As in the RE1 Remake, his knife cannot be used as a defensive subweapon, unlike the RE2 Remake's disposable daggers and unlockable infinite knife. But it is just as unbreakable as the infinite knife. It possesses greater damage and range, despite also being heavier and slower to swing than the other two knives. As for his lighter, it can be used to slowly burn giant spider webs and downed Ivies one at a time, as an alternative to incendiary weapons. If one wanted, there could even be some candles or fireplaces you can light with it, to reveal hints on how to access secret optional items. Because these two are personal items of Chris and would have greater story significance, I think it would make sense for items like those to not respawn in Second Run, if picked up in First Run. *4.) Bring in the anti-B.O.W. gas mechanic from the original.* It could weaken monsters in the short term, but in the long term, it could enable the Ivies to spew toxic clouds when shot or even burned (as a possible counterbalance to you using the lighter to finish them off, instead of the flamethrower or grenade launcher from a distance). Plus, because the "Evolved Lickers" in the original came off less as a unique separate enemy type and more as another duplicate enemy with altered stats, I was thinking that a stand-in for them could also result from the gas sprinklers. On a separate note, I find it odd that the gas does not appear at all in the campaign, seeing how the RE2 Remake still found ways to repurpose the hip pouches, SMG, window boarding, Brad Vickers Easter egg, removal of Plant 43 vines, etc. The closest thing we got to that was the poison zombies in the separate Ghost Survivors mode and the file explaining them in “No Time to Mourn”. *5.) Expand on the alligator, to both do to it what RE1 Remake did to the Mother Neptune and also make it much more worthwhile as a zapping opportunity.* Perhaps Leon could just manage to reach a safe enclosed area and drive off the alligator, when he first encounters it with Ada. Chronologically afterwards, either Leon or Claire will be able to encounter the gator, which has made a labyrinthian section of the sewers into its den. Similarly to Oscar the zombie elephant from Resident Evil Outbreak File 2, the alligator will patrol that section, which you will be forced to go into and out of multiple times. You can not only choose to stagger the alligator enough times with your firepower (causing it to retreat until Second Run) or lure it into biting a giant gas pipe (so you instantly kill it and it cannot even menace the second character), but also just keep running and hiding from it completely so you have a third option. Plus, I think you should need to traverse a long distance in the alligator's den to reach the flammable gas pipes, while it is hunting you, and be able to permanently botch your attempt if you let the gator finish biting through the pipes. That way, even if you know the trick, it is still not easy to kill the alligator with just one bullet, there is still some challenge in pulling it off. My main drawback with the original RE2 is that, once I saw the fuel canister, it made the fight even easier than my time confronting the alligator in RE2 Remake, and I did not even know you could repel it by simply shooting it enough times. *6 and 7.) Allow Ada Wong or Claire Redfield to influence the other's trek through the sewers, depending on which character you choose for your First Run.* In Leon's First Run for example, Ada Wong has the option to flip a switch on some gate controls in the water treatment plant, creating an alternate branching path for Claire, when she is initially entering the sewers from the orphanage basement. If you chose Claire as your First Run character, and Ada's trek is happening chronologically afterwards, the maybe Claire could play around with a crane to move certain large objects around, influencing how Ada will have to navigate her unique section during Leon's Second Run.

This is the best review of RE2make I've seen. I really appreciate that you don't just point out flaws and say, "What a horrible decision, anyway here's the next horrible decision Capcom made", but actually went in-depth with your own ideas, most of which are great alternatives. I loved the remake so much it inspired me to replay the original RE2 for the first time in ten years. This review completely sums up and expands on my thoughts after finishing my ClaireA/LeonB run. I'll still love RE2make, but it's dropped it from a 9/10 experience to something lower.

Biggest crime is how they treated the A&B scenarios. It literally felt like an afterthought. They wanted to make a story with one ending and one beginning. Then realized the backlash they'd get for not having different scenarios so they half a*sed and shoehorned it in with minimal effort. That's really my main issue with the game. The rest is great.👌

Yeah, if this was destined to have only two scenarios, they at least could make them Claire A and Leon B
@coreymckee4844
@coreymckee4844 Год назад
@@steelbear2063 yeah what they could have done was a mix of both. Just have Clair A as part 1 and Leon B as part 2. Thus having one conclusive ending. They didnt need 4 total scenarios if they really couldn't do it. But ATLEAST treat Clair A and Leon B as one complete playthrough.

So, a bit of context. They WERE an afterthought. If you read articles c. 2018, the producers openly stated that they streamlined the system to have single, unified stories for Claire and Leon that could be considered canon for later games and take away any confusion as to what really happened. I honestly wish they stuck to their guns on this. They pivoted following the negative reaction to this, but it's obviously rushed; I always felt like RE:2's implementation of this does more harm than good. As it stands, we just got multiple scenarios that are impossible to fit together since certain setpieces and puzzles are repeated across scenarios.

The point of the A/B scenarios was to give the player more content. Not to be canon, just to be fun; RE has always been loose with the story.

Eh, I'm glad they're gone. Giant spiders are dumb and would be beyond terrifying with that level graphics. Removing the crows was kinda dumb tho... I don't see why Ivys at least kind of survived through the plant zombies but they look radically different

They removed the crows, roaches and spiders, and entirely redesigned Ivy into a mere buffed zombie, just because it was "ridiculous and unrealistic", but they also kept the giant alligator that had no context, which was arguably THE single most ridiculous and a largely inconsequential enemy in the original? And even then they somehow shat on that enemy too... Not to mention they're talking about realism in Resident Evil, of all games... Are these devs stupid? Nevertheless I like the RE2 remake because as a game it's great and arguably one of the absolute best, but as Resident Evil 2 it feels like it's incomplete, outright missing half of the story (making A and B scenarios order irrelevant) and a large chunk of content, and using cheap modern tricks in the same vein as RE6. And yet somehow I can't bring myself to hate this game, I love it. It just doesn't do a great job at being a remake, and the devs were awfully arrogant.

They redesigned Ivy into a Regenerador ripoff. It seems that a lot of original enemy designs in the series since the first Revelations game are based on Regenerador (big feauterless figures with fangs or claws and long limbs that move in a weird creepy way).
