I’m so glad you guys mentioned the scene where it’s implied that something got out. I’ve theorized that scene for years. And nobody seemed to remember it until you guys.
A good idea would be Tony and keiran talking about the resident evil games a bit more in depth with game footage. I'm sure keiran has a lot more to say about the series than he got to cover here.
All the movies sucked they suck even more now we know we could of got Wes craven to do it if was past on but we got someone who just watch the cut scenes
I think that the others movies made the first one to fade onto obscurity, if the saga ended in like 2 or 3 movies, I think the first one would be remembered better. And no "one of those terrible resident evil movies"
I remember reading about this in fangoria magazine. After watching it at a midnight screening, I thought it was great but it could have used more blood and gore. The score to the movie was awesome.
50:00 The group was separated when the explosion happened from the tanks. Matt and Alice were grouped and the rest were over by the doors. Alice loses Matt because he is uncuffed and can now go off to find his sister. The others end up in that middle room with multiple doors connected to the red queens chamber. There are zombies outside the door into that room in the 'dining hall', so Alice isn't going to make her way through that crowd, she goes off to find another way. She finds Matt and they are chased by zombies back to the group through another door leading into that room they all were hiding in. I think it all makes sense, I do wish we seen the zombie chase from the beginning tho.
When I saw this in the theatre I thought it was okay. Strange because it didn’t have the characters you’d expect. Instead you had milla playing an anime portag. I was a big milla fan so that was okay by me. But the movie was definite b grade schlock. Good actors, but bad direction and editing. Aliens ripoff in plot, Matrix ripoff in style. Early 2000’s to the max. Right down to M Rod in the part she always plays. I’d say the sequel apocalypse is both better and worse. Always great to see Kieran!👍
All the minor cuts and bruises on Milla Jovovich's character are real. No make-up was applied. Milla Jovovich said the real reason she did this movie was because her brother Marko was a huge fan of the video games. The presidents of Capcom Japan and America have cameos as zombies. Capcom created the Resident Evil series. The main actors were told to prepare for the film by getting copies of the games and playing them through. Some of them didn't know if they could complete them in time so they had to get video copies of other people beating the games and then watch it. (at around 1h 30 mins) There is a shot of Alice's eye close up near the end of the film. This is a direct reference to the first game in the series Milla Jovovich's character's name, Alice, is only revealed during the credits. (at around 11 mins) The wedding picture of Alice and Spencer looks similar to the pictures from Resident Evil (1996) and Resident Evil 2 (1998) (with the subjects up close and spliced onto the background image, and always in black and white). Even though they're everywhere, the word "zombie" is never spoken in this film. (at around 1h 27 mins) Near the end, when the underground tram pulls back to the Mansion station, the serial number on the front of the lead car reads "ALEXIA" followed by a string of digits. Alexia Ashford is the final antagonist of Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Also, Underground Trams are a recurring mode of transportation in the Resident Evil games. In the movie, Alice's fake husband is named Spence. This is a reference to the first game which took place in a mansion named the Spencer Estate. Also, one of the three founders of Umbrella Corporation in the game series is named Ozwell Spencer. The makeup department and crew had a hard time dealing with the dogs, who kept licking the zombie makeup, blood and meat off of themselves. The studio, Sony Pictures, had hoped at one time to make the film PG-13 so as to make the film more marketable to the younger video game fans, but director Paul W.S Anderson insisted that to be true to the game, the film must be rated R. Milla Jovovich and Paul W.S. Anderson, who met on the set of "Resident Evil", were married on 22nd August 2009 and (as of January 2019) have two children. Like in the games, after something is switched on/off, something else happens elsewhere. When the Red Queen is deactivated for the first time, all doors elsewhere are opened.
Fun fact: I rented this film from Blockbuster back in the day. I was in high school, so some time between 2002-2006. To take advantage of my limited time with the rental, this was the first film that I ever sat and watched with the commentary on. I don't remember any of the commentary, but I'm mentioning it because y'all mentioned it.
Halon stopped being used mostly in the early 90s, due to it being a very high ozone depleting substance. Less to do with how deadly it can be, it’s not banned outright however. It’s banned and illegal to manufacture. High level government/military can still use it, along with aircraft. I work in the industry, so I have a little understanding
Can confirm, I'm in the Navy and we still use halon on the ships in the main engine spaces and aux spaces. We have to use EBDs to escape a space that halon was set off in typically we only have 10 mins tops.
42:47 That weired eye CGI zombie, his faked eye looked like it's drawn in crayon. It always reminded me of that professor with one giant eye from the 1984 parody movie Top Secret.
The laser hallway scene was done better in the Cube. In the Cube it just wasn't laser, though, but I think sharp wire or something if I remember correctly. That would be a good film for Hack the Movies btw
I had zero clue there was any new Resident Evil movie coming out but I am INTO it!! They had me at the mansion. Great episode! Also, stage kissing is NOT real kissing. I can't think of anything less romantic haha.
So excited for this review!! Thanks Tony for doing another video game movie, Resident Evil nonethless!!! It was awesome catching up with you guys at RetroWorld I hope you enjoyed some CT Pizza while you were here!
I binged on these films last February, along with the animated Resident Evil films. I appreciate the live-action films for being different from the games, although they got a little too ridiculous as they went on.
I love all these movies, I watched all of them including the cgi movies before I ever played any of the games due to me never seeing the games in stores and not being able to afford them and only started to experience the game only about 4 years ago and I’m only 16
I think you guys are right, Resident Evil did probably trigger the slow rise of zombie popularity that gave us this movie and then Shaun of the Dead, triggering all sorts of zombie movies and the Walking Dead. (tho' I feel The Walking Dead could also perhaps be the cause of exhausting the scene too)
I don't buy the film being underrated (for me it badly lacked atmosphere & genuine scares) but the games are great. The first one in particular is a work of genius IMO. Many modern games are so sprawling & convoluted that i find them off-putting but the construction of RE1's narrative and gameplay mechanics were pitch-perfect with barely an ounce of flab. The outstanding remake on the Gamecube is still one of my all-time-favourite gaming experiences. Great video, guys.
I'm definetly going to watch your twitch streams man, I liked this one and had a fun time with the second film. The rest are 😒 meh. I also am looking forward to the reboot. If you and Tony go see it and do a review. You guys should cosplay as the characters. If Johanna is reviewing have her or Crystal as Claire or Jill. I can see Tony as dressing up as Chris and Keiran as Leon.
Im with Kieran the nostalgia and being the scariest game i played at the time...just awesome. Soo happy with the remakes but havnt played but a demo...
@@AZOMBIERYO Like going for a long trip with your parents and seeing billboards of a cool amusement park. The park is getting nearer and you can't wait to get there ...and then the ride stops and you're bored and disapponted
@@JesusRodriguez-ib8hn newt was the guy who got blamed for the recent monster madness plagurism fiasco. Tbh I don't think most hack the movie fans care about it. I think screenwave are mad at him though for embaressing them. I hope he returns to hack the movies as well by the way
Executives had a shot of creating a geniuenly solid movie making it around Lisa Trevors family story and connecting it with first two games. This story is heartwrenching and coulv been a win for all audiences.
I saw this one in theater. I remember coming away thinking it was a cool movie, but at the same time I didn't like all the CG monster/mutants. I wanted it to be more horror than action, but it was still enjoyable. I was hoping the following movies would get gradually better as their budgets got better but that never happened. I also wanted to see the main characters from the games but that never happened either. It was like a version of Resident Evil set in another dimension where they didn't exist.
Brining my friend to watch Resident Evil 2 Apocalypse as a young teen made him convert to a silent hill fan 😂 ( sadly was his first exposure to the franchise, had him questioning why I thought Nemesis in the games was so awesome.
With the original PS1 Resident Evil game, there was a Japanese challenge of completing the game in 1 go under 3hrs only using your knife. I attempted my play through with ease. Made it all the way to the underground laboratory and died before I got any herbs. It was so fun! I need to try this again!
My concern at the time of this film's original release was I found out early on that basically nobody from the games was represented here and that originally soured me to wanting to see it. My brother and I played RE: Director's Cut to death, beat RE2 a few times, and I beat RE: Code Veronica a few times by the time we had an opportunity to watch this film the first time, and I just couldn't get past the absences of Jill, Chris, AND Wesker in this first entry at the time. I was stuck in this mindset of "who is this random chick Alice who was never in any of the games" and that very much colored my ability to enjoy it as an "adaptation" of the series.
RE in general is amazing. Classic horror games are #1 but imo the movies were great cuz they didn’t take themselves to seriously and just did watever while still having a slight RE connection. I grew up on RE1-4 so I can’t help but love this movie.
I love how the endings of the original PSX games always imply things got better after you beat the game. Like RE1, Chris looking at the city and everything's fine, or he's fishing or something. Or RE2, beat it with Leon and the end picture is him in front of police tape helping save the city, but by RE3, they imply THAT picture didn't happen.
They nuked the city at the end of RE2 so there definitely wouldn't have been any pictures, the "cannon" for RE2 was Claire A and Leon B. RE3 took place 24hrs before RE2 and then during the end of RE2, so at the same time Leon and Claire are escaping on the train, Jill and Carlos are escaping in the helicopter.
Pretty awesome they called it "Dining Hall B" and it's basically a place where Lickers get nutrition (via the tubes you see briefly) and I imagine Dining Hall A is where the humans go to eat like a cafeteria or something. Lol
I read somewhere that Paul W.S. Anderson added the initials W.S. (which stand for William and Scott, his middle names) to his name because people were mistaking him for Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood). Supposedly, people had approached him and asked him questions about Magnolia, like what was the significance of the raining frogs scene.
Just watched the first one again and although I never liked the way it brought new characters into the franchise, it’s actually quite a fun film that does enough to nail the spirit of the game
Did anyone think that the guy that played Matt (cop) would have been the PERFECT guy to play Max Payne in terms of looks? I think he would have acted it better than Mark Wahlberg too. I still think also, that Resident Evil: Apocalypse is the best of the movies, although i didnt like the MK fight between Alice and Nemesis.
Similar to the Fast and/or Furious series, I think a big part of whether or not you enjoy these movies hinges on if you think the lead character is as cool as THEY think they are.
Once again, I love this show y'all! Like sitting with friends and talking out tapes! Er.... I mean Hackin' movies! Er... I mean Hack the Movies! Sitting with friends and saying "Let's HACK THE MOVIES!" Anyway... Just messin! Love u guys and gals! Oh and that girl does NOT look like Jeri Ryan. Just sayin'!
