Watch, listen, and learn as I take you through a Code Violation Journey. This is Part 1 of a compilation of the most common code violations that I encounter everyday, highlighting Residential Framing & Final Inspection. All violations are based on the 2018 IRC or Manufacturer's Installation Instructions. So, if you're a Building Inspector, Home Inspector, or Contractor...take note & enjoy.

Love your vids, Mr. Inspector! At about 13:00 where the framers created a chase that has to be fireblocked: is just some cheap half inch OSB sufficient to seal that chase on the top, or do you need to use something else? Also, if the chase is more than 8 feet taller than the slab, do you have to use 2 different fireblocks, one at 8 feet and one at the ceiling?

The builder on one of the jobs that I videotaped called me and told me to remove my video he did not like me showing his work. From my experience, the issue is with humidity over a long period of time weakening the drywall causing it to fall with vibrations. Another problem is having the tape peel off of the joints and leaving a crack. I see this a lot with firewalls in attics. A better solution might be tile backer board installed with large-headed screws or screws with washers. The joints could be taped with the proper fiber tape and sealed with thin-set mortar.
@Renrondog
@Renrondog 2 года назад
Would aluminum roll flashing with seams taped qualify? Humidity wouldn't really affect it, not sure about the fire rating or gauge needed. ?
@serenasmith6412
@serenasmith6412 9 месяцев назад
Minimum code is a joke. If anyone ever advertised that their construction meets code, they build the worst building code will allow. There are best practices that would include noncombustible components.

As far as the anchor bolt being on a load bearing wall. If the concrete guys don't place them. Is it up to the framing contractor to let the inspector know before they start work? Or is the framing contractor allowed to drill into the slab and then becomes their fault if they don't? Also if they are not, do they need to send off to a structural engineer to get a stamp of approval to drill into the slab and add the bolt? Thank you sir! Great video!
@PPG1967

So, if it's not caught at concrete stage, the framers are allowed to drill and install anchor bolts at load bearing walls.

The bracket on the wall that gets nailed to the truss. We call them "truss claws". The thing is. If we don't nail the trusses down to the walls. What holds them level and straight?
@PPG1967

So, the engineered roof truss must be allowed to move up and down at the interior. Simpson make a slotted bracket that allows this uplifting movement.

When u get your truss layout paper work from the company that builds them if you look in the paper work they show you how and what to use if you come a cross broken trusses...ive seen where inspectors said that it is ok to use that for a guide to repair the trusse and ive had inspectors make us get letters and we would have to cut out the broken pieces and replace it then plywood it on both sides .....

I saw some additional things that looked like they would be code violations in my area of the country. And some of the codes mentioned in this video are different than the codes in my area. What I would say is check your local codes. Most are now based in the IRC (International Residential Code), but some are not and some haven’t adopted all of it. Also a code for commercial is often different than a code for residential. Commercial and residential use different sets of codes, at least they do in my area.

PPG, my comment was not meant to be critical of you. I hope you didn’t take it that way. I wanted to point out to others who watched your video and might be reading the comments that they should check their latest building codes. I am an Architectural Designer in the Cincinnati Area and all the building departments of the various communities I have worked with are currently using the 2019 Residential code of Ohio which is based off IRC 2019. One example that I noticed that is different here is that our code allows up to 8 1/4” risers in residential. You had stated that your code was 7 3/4”.

This is very good.. here's the but part or question you said your a Georgia inspector... But even with international codes all states will buy pass the international codes buy stating to contractor that they only go buy county and or city codes , thus you usually as contractor are told even in classes to abide buy that first .. you in most states fight Three different code inspectors at time .. I know this and asked and told inspector I followed the international codes which is over and county and or city codes but they get mad and start power tripping you .. how do you handle this .. but after being mad to make corrections another inspector asked me why I did this I told him and he laughed in fact this guy taught the school for the trade but he said just go over the heads if we are sure we are right .. of course fighting or pissing an inspector off is not what we like to do but he was right as well .. this video is on par to the way we run our jobs and most times beyond but from time to time we are caught buy power tripping inspectors.. why not have one code not three this would stop all confusion of this and most could go buy the correct code that's acceptable and read correctly by all parties.. again great job ... And yes to many take short cuts and inspectors are needed without doubt

So, stick- built roof framing in my opinion is not better than engineered roof truss. I've done inspections on both and to be perfectly honest I've failed more stick-builted roof framing inspections. At least with engineered roof truss all you have to certain yourself with are broken truss which can be repaired onsite. Engineered roof truss are designed & manufactured in a factory to exact specifications. With stick-built framing, if you get an inexperienced framing out there you could in up with a mess.

I know all this codes are supposed to have a valid reasoning behind. But sometimes I wonder if we do really have to follow them. On that handrail, why it needs to terminate on the wall? Me as a homeowner, I would like it as shown. I can't envision any reason besides being a possible hazard if you hit it with nay poart of your body and the termination is rough. Which would be an accident, and that can appen with almost any thing on your house, a toilet, a door knob, a sink any appliance.

Codes change from time to time. They are not always perfect but there is always a reason for them. An alternative to having the end terminate into the wall is to have it terminate at a newel post or safety terminal. One example of the code being imperfect in my opinion is that it doesn’t adequately define safety terminal.
@denali9449
@denali9449 Год назад
@@karlhalvorson4172 Yes, the code is silent on the term 'safety terminal'. This would come up every second or third code cycle and the general consensus was that 'everyone knows what a safety terminal is; "A safety terminal is any type of handrail termination that eliminates the possibility of something getting snagged on it."

"Floor assemblies that are not required elsewhere in this code to be fire-resistance rated, shall be provided with a 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) gypsum wallboard membrane, 5/8-inch (16 mm) wood structural panel membrane, or equivalent on the underside of the floor framing member." Couple of general comments. First, it would be good to inform the viewer of your credentials for presenting this material, i.e. ICC certifications. Second would be to provide specific code references for a violation. You or me (PE & MCP) simply saying something is a violation does not reinforce to the student what the code actually says. For example, the fastening of wood trusses to interior partition walls is not a code violation in itself. It may be in contradiction to the manufacturers installation instructions. The movement you a discussing here is called truss creep.

As a former board member and member of a dozen code development committees I must ask if you have obtained a written agreement from the Council for the use of their logo. Normally individuals are not given this authorization, rather they must use the "Member" logo if they are indeed individual members. I was a subject matter expert for ICC on the IRC - Building and IBC - Chapter 10 Means of Egress, and never used the logo for anything outside of my classes. If you have received permission from the Council to use their logo to promote your private business, I will apologize in advance.
